23.01.2022 This kind of feedback from principals I admire makes the writing of my new book worthwhile. My wife, Sharon calls this book my mistress because Ive spent so long with her. This principal writes, Mark, I'm sending copies of your new baby to staff to have a look at. I watched the promo video #1 and almost cried; we have some terribly vulnerable kids who really dont remember that they are loved. What you describe is exactly what I have been on about this year thank you, because these kids are coming out of the woodwork at the moment (in line with the parent mental health issues too). Thanks for writing an honest book with such humane responses! https://teachingvaluesofbeinghuman.com.au/webinars.html

23.01.2022 SIBLING RIVALRY: how to see it and deal with it Competition between siblings has occurred since the beginning of time as kids have fought for time, attention, love, resources, and approval from their parents. Sibling relationships are the longest lasting and most constant intimate relationships formed by human beings, and mostly, they are driven by affection. They last longer than most friendships, through the deaths of parents and beyond many marriages. Sharing an extended s...hared history from early childhood into old age is significant! The truth is, most kids don’t have a natural incentive to treat their siblings nicely because no matter what they do, their sibling will still be there ready for them tomorrow! As well, a lot of sibling rivalry tends to occur ‘back-stage’ where parents never get to witness a beginning. What we get to see is the ‘performance’ and it is often the tip of the iceberg. This audio book highlights a host of practical approaches to soothe the intensity and work towards a more collaborative sibling culture. When sibling relationships are deftly supported and managed by parents in the early years, they are more likely to show greater compassion, tolerance and stronger connections towards each other. 20.01.2022 I received this feedback about my new book from a principal I admire. While she praises the book, my wife and dearest friend, Sharon, calls TEACHING VALUES of BEING HUMAN my mistress because Ive spent so long with her. 20.01.2022 THE ART OF MANAGING TRICKY BEHAVIOURS and extinguishing them This audio book challenges how you think about behaviour and so-called ‘mis’ behaviour. To do this we use our ‘soft eyes’ and ‘warm hearts’ to interpret what the behaviour is attempting to communicate. Behaviours are an expression of a need, and to survive a moment, children can choose their behaviours based on a faulty logic. Wrapped in this choice is the purest of stories. Only when we are prepared to imagine what...’s going on for them, can we make a difference. This audio book also presents a 12-part guide to work with tricky behaviours. Time is given to the role of shame because it can escalate emotions fast. We need to know this and use language that does not provoke shame in our children. As well, I will touch on the delivery of negative consequences because sometimes we must hold our child accountable for a poor choice. I coach that we deliver consequences with kindness, without overexplaining or without being retaliatory. We do it with compassion because this will help your child grow into a more empathetic human. The best consequence is to support kids to repair the damage, upset or harm they have caused. Teaching them how to make amends is an invaluable life skill. Another consequence may be to lovingly pull them closer, hug them, and say, I know you’re disappointed. You made a mistake. What have you learnt from it? Staying emotionally connected allows a precious space to be built where they naturally feel a little regret and want to make changes, rather than being forced to. 17.01.2022 BRILLIANT LITTLE IDEAS to grow perseverance in young people Many good people who have had something to offer go to their graves frustrated by their inability to persevere. In recent years, researchers have explored the idea of what creates successful/satisfied people. Time and time again, one characteristic emerged as THE significant predictor of success/personal satisfaction. It is the ability to persevere. We now understand that kids and adults who can persevere are more li...kely to find a way to accomplish the task at hand. The research also teaches us that children can be taught to be more persistent. This audio book is bursting with a selection of sparkling conversations, ideas and activities to promote our children’s capacity to persevere. If you’ve already got a persistent child, this audio book will help you re-frame your thinking, so you’ll see their stubbornness as a strength to work with. And, if your child isn't naturally persistent, this will support you with effective ways to develop it. Either way, perseverance will no longer be a mystery.

14.01.2022 INSIGHT; Teaching Values of Being Human. My fishy story "There were two fish friends. They were swimming together in a pond when another fish slowly swims towards them. As this fish passes by, she nods and says, Good morning! Isnt the clarity of the water spectacular today? The two fish friends return the nod, smile pleasantly at her, and swim on. A little later one looks to the other and asks, What do you think? Whats water?" Just as the concept of water was less... than an emerging understanding for the two fish friends, most young people we love, nurture and teach are at the beginning of their lifelong quest to learn about themselves and the world. Here lies our responsibility. The rich potential of a quality emotional classroom, or home, environment is unrivalled because they offer young human beings a special place to grow, learn and thrive. I believe, along with growing numbers, that we must be protectors of these special spaces. See more

14.01.2022 From chapter 8 from, Teaching Values of Being Human "With the benefit of hindsight we now understand that our traditional punitive responses to children who displayed ‘mis’behaviour often amped-up their behaviour challenges. In the past, adults were taught to enter heated moments with young people carrying a sledgehammer. The moment was seen as a battle to win, yet it should have nothing to do with winning.... The truth is bringing the sledgehammer along, reinforced their patterns of toxic stress and trauma in many children. In some instances, educators and parents proved too disagreeable and pushed them away. Yet, they were hurt and unprepared for life. We had little idea at the time but know better today. And, this is why our thinking has shifted to ‘connection,’ ‘dignity’ and ‘belonging’. There’s a shift to accept children are reliant on our modelling and poise. Many rely on us to defuse situations for them." https://teachingvaluesofbeinghuman.com.au/Videos.html

12.01.2022 What is 'Teaching Values of Being Human?' Let's explore the chapters and their relevance to us as educators, teachers, leaders, facilitators, school support workers, allied health professionals, parents, human beings. Chapter 1 A short guide to coach Social and Emotional Literacy (SEL)... Above all else, the chapter opens a space where conversations and activities combine to develop the big six social and emotional capabilities are legitimised; teamwork, empathy, negotiation, leadership, coaching, learning and persuasive skills. 'Guided Social Interactions' also have the capacity to refresh your group's concentration, engagement or enthusiasm when you sense its waning. They can be drawn on as ice breakers and team building exercises, to help build group cohesiveness. And, they are a perfect tool to repair the emotional fallout in class following an unpleasant incident between students.

05.01.2022 INSIGHT; Teaching Values of Being Human. From chapter 3 Stimulating self-awareness and building self-identity in young people. "Once upon a time, not that long ago, there was no formal education to strengthen the concept of self-awareness and personal identity. Strangely one of the greatest capacities in life the skill to learn about yourself and discover how you fit into the world was not taught. Today its slowly taking a rightful place in the curriculum (and in classrooms) where teachers are beginning to teach young people to discover who they are and who they can become. Moreover, as adults working with young people, in any capacity, there is much we can be doing with our kids to grow life-sustaining capacities."

03.01.2022 TEACHING THE VALUE OF CONNECTION As human beings we are wired to belong. And, from an evolutionary perspective, if you didnt belong to community you did not survive. Today its different. Today, if you dont belong to community family, extended family, classroom, school, clubs, associations or special interest groups the risk of mental health challenges are high. But, building community starts with us. It starts with our effort to build the skills and confidence in your yo...ung. We need to culturize our homes, classrooms and schools so community has a reverence. The benefit of a connected community goes like this. A teacher brought enough balloons to school for every child in her class. Then she asked the children to blow them up and write their name on their balloon. They threw all the balloons into the gym and the teacher thoroughly mixed them up. Next, the teacher gave them 5 minutes to find the balloon with their name on it. It was chaos. The children ran around, looking frantically and time ran out. Only a few had found their own balloon. Then, the teacher explained what community means. It means we work together supporting helping and looking out for each other. She suggested that this time, when they start again, that each student picks up the balloon closest to them and walks it it to the person whos name is on it. In less than 2 minutes everyone was standing still and holding their own balloon. The teacher smiled and said, You just did community. Happiness, friendship, even the promises we set our self, is always improved by working together. https://www.teachingvaluesofbeinghuman.com.au/

03.01.2022 EVERYDAY IDEAS to build healthy, resilient young people The term resilience is used to describe a person’s capacity to cope with change or challenge, and to bounce back with vigour and optimism. Resiliency is such a prized quality as it positions us for the inevitable hiccups, tests and disasters that await us in the future. We now understand that resilience is not a trait that a few lucky ones are born with. It involves behaviours, thoughts and actions that are gradually lea...rned and developed. This audio book presents a collection of resilience builders, known as the 10-C’s; can-do attitude, confidence, connections, capacity to change, contributing to others, core values, controlling what you can, communication, composed parenting and common sense. The 10-C’s position parents to become the best resilience coach for their children. While these are critical ideas to work with, most critical is how a parent models their own resilience to their children on an everyday basis. Oh yes! Our children watch us and learn. Family is the place children and teens gain their resilience and they are dependent on us to know how to invest in them. Isn’t it ironic that our children’s resilience hinges on us, what we model and how we coach, for the first 20 years of their lives? Available soon from... www.marklemessurier.com.au
