23.01.2022 I love the lines, and arcs, of Roman architecture, I know this was a place of death and entertainment which we find incomprehensible through a modern western lens. This is the remains of the amphitheatre at Pozzuoli, formerly Puteoli, major Roman port & centre of commerce. While the Colosseum is magnificent, there are way less tourists traipsing around Pozzuoli, and you can se the holding areas for animals awaiting the arena (sorry!) and how the mechanisms of trapdoors and the... like worked. Did you know that the Roman arch transformed architecture? Romans were able to build far larger buildings and structures with multi-storeys. It was a huge leap forward in practical maths. It allowed for acqueducts to traverse enormous tracts of land, bringing fresh water to the empire. This in turn raised the hygiene standards and increased longevity. Mind blowing innovation when you consider the ramifications. See more

12.01.2022 Love this! Don’t think there is any fear we will find something like this under our vineyard

09.01.2022 Great to look to the Greeks, they were so introspective & bring much wisdom to the inner life. Not sure I’d go to Seneca for advice on lockdown though a thorough bore

06.01.2022 Amazing & affirming. The study of humanities and history is useful and enhances our awareness of our own societies through analysing those that have been here before https://www.smithsonianmag.com//long-lost-languages-foun/

05.01.2022 The study of the Classical world and its languages is as relevant as ever. Humans haven’t changed much in the last few Millenia. The examination and analysis of history is a powerful lens through which to view the present. Reading texts in the original provides scope for even greater insight and interpretation. Keep Latin at North Sydney Boys High - alma mater to many classical scholars. Kids need choice and subjects that challenge and stimulate them or we are all going to hell in a hand basket.
