25.01.2022 It seems obvious that reading aloud in real time would be the best way to remember information..........Research on the subject backs this up.

25.01.2022 Fantastic as usual, Dr. Tony Attwood.

24.01.2022 Although this is an article from 2015, it is very relevant to the renewed discussion about the use of a screening tool that is recommended to all schools, Australia wide, to check for phonics knowledge in young school children.

23.01.2022 I have been told before I can't have empathy because of Asperger's but we all know they couldn't have it more wrong - Bryan :) <3

22.01.2022 This has to be successful for the sake of our children.

22.01.2022 A simple, effective way to influence and support learning.

21.01.2022 Do Aussie kids know enough about Australia's 60,000 years of culture?

16.01.2022 Absolutely agree with this!

16.01.2022 The emotional, practical and financial toll of low literacy can be severe, particularly in a world that assumes almost everyone can read and write.

15.01.2022 The fabulous Tony Attwood.

15.01.2022 For 20 years I have worked with students who have problems reading and writing. As my understanding of how people learn to read increased as well as my knowledge of the 'code' of written English, it became obvious that many students haven't been taught to read at all. They have been taught to approximate (guess) words. Comprehension becomes a game of guessing and supposing the meanings of written text. I have found that, often, the most interesting and talented students are the ones that are the most disheartened by their limited abilities to read. It's sad and unnecessary.

12.01.2022 I find this article sadly resonating. Perhaps I'm a bit sensitive at the moment; I'm a new grandma, but I hope we can all think about the ideas in this article.

11.01.2022 A reminder of what some people experience when the look at a text.

10.01.2022 Hi Everyone, This letter to new teachers clearly explains why some kids can't read, spell or comprehend text, don't read books, don't enjoy reading or generally fail at academic tasks. Learning to read early in life is much easier than attending tutoring for an hour once a week to re-learn how to read or improve written expression. Let's hope that teachers and schools let go of old ways in favour of research based and proven strategies for teaching reading - early in Primary School!

09.01.2022 Not only a clear description of learning to read but a congratulations to Readings bookshop for stocking these important books.

08.01.2022 From strength to strength

08.01.2022 This is a very straight forward and accurate account of what is happening to children in a lot of our schools. Most of my students of the past 10 or 12 years have suffered from illiteracy for many different reasons. However, not actually being taught to read is the main reason. This is shocking, unnecessary and shameful. Parents, grandparents and all others who are interested in the literacy of our children should make some noise about this injustice.

07.01.2022 This an interesting article about eating disorders and ASD. Seems like trying to unscramble an egg!

04.01.2022 Happy New Year everyone! I have seen a useful post from Alison Clarke on her spelfabet blog about how to teach youngsters to read. She is offering a free booklet to download and put you on the right track for teaching reading. I am impressed and urge you all with youngsters new to reading to have a look. www.spelfabet.com.au

04.01.2022 Hooray for some logical thought on the subject of teaching reading! Teaching reading skills with synthetic phonics is not a 'belief' but a proven technique that has been recommended in the teaching literature for at least a decade! Catch up, people!
