23.01.2022 COMMUNITY MEETING RED GULLY FIRE UPDATE (5 JAN) The following are NOTES ONLY taken by staff at the Shire of Gingin at the community meeting held in Guild...erton this afternoon at 1pm. Staff have sought to ensure accuracy of the following but it is not guaranteed. These notes should not be relied upon as accurate information for the latest updates regarding the Red Gully fire front. REFER first and foremost to www.emergency.wa.gov.au for the latest information. ACRONYMS DFES Department of Fire & Emergency Services DBCA Department of Biodiversity, Conservation & Attractions HWY Highway KM/HR Kilometres per hour Ha Hectares Andrew Duckworth (Deputy Incident Controller) provided the following comments: FIRE DETAILS/BEHAVIOUR - Fire started in the morning on Saturday, 2 January in Red Gully adjacent to Brand HWY - The fire has been fanned by a strong East/North Easterly Wind with gusts up to 60-70km/hr. It is moving through grassland and bush. Winds have consistently been 20-30km/hr and the fire has generally moved at about 3.5km/hr - The fire was contained on Sunday but then flared up on Monday afternoon and broke through containment lines - As of this morning approximately 6,000 ha have been burnt - Around 200 fire fighters from multiple agencies (DFES, Shire, DBCA, etc.) are fighting the fire - Air craft are assisting with fixed wing and rotary air craft. A large air tanker from the eastern states is also assisting by dropping retardant. It is operating out of Busselton and it is a 1-2 hr turn around. - The fire is currently about 4km from the north eastern corner of Ocean Farms. The fire has so far travelled about 50km GENERAL COMMENTS - Thank you to all the people who have already evacuated from Ocean Farms. If fire fighters do not have to worry about evacuating residents then they are free to fight the fire without worrying about this. - If you are in WEDGE ISLAND please leave the area. Fire crews cannot battle the fire if it goes into the area because there is unexploded ordinance in that area given the nearby military base. If you are still there please leave if you can. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS Q Is the retardant toxic? A No. It washes away with rain but it can stain. Q Is Guilderton in any danger or should we just be alert? A Yes be alert. Listen to updates via radio, online, etc. If you have a bush fire plan, get it out and make sure you’re familiar with it. Q Are you aware of 2 small fires that occurred last night on the south side of Moore River? A No. I (Andrew Duckworth) wasn’t aware of them. Q What communication methods can we use in Ocean Farms? The internet has slowed down and ABC radio doesn’t work in the area. A If you still have access to a phone then you can call 13 3337 (13 DFES) for updates from DFES. 6PR and other radio stations are also providing news bulletin updates. Alternatively, contact the Shire of Gingin on (08) 9575 5100 during office hours (8am 4.30pm). Shire officers will also be available on Facebook into the evening (approximately 10pm resume at 6am) if internet access does improve. Q In relation to communications for those people staying in the evacuation centres, there seems to be a long wait for updates. Can you explain the communications plan? Is it going to be daily? Online? Etc.? A For those staying in the Evacuation Centre there are staff here who can provide updates. Alternatively if you have access to a mobile phone and can go to www.emergency.wa.gov.au or to Facebook then you can view the updates that are put out approximately every hour. Community meetings such as this will take place daily possibly twice daily in fact. Q What about people still in Ocean Farms? A If it becomes urgent to evacuate then fire fighters will be sent in to notify anyone who still hasn't left. Q What about other methods? UHF/CB radios seem to work well as truckies will often provide updates if they’re in the area. A You can also call the Shire during their working hours (8am 4.30pm) or DFES on 13 33 37. Q How long will the Evacuation Centre stay open? A few more days? A Most likely yes. Q When the fire was contained, how come it wasn’t put out? A The containment line was approximately 50km. It can take days and weeks to burn it all out, put it out with water, etc. within this area. There is always a chance a fire can jump a containment line. Even a solid 100m thick containment line can be breached if there is a flare up. Some fires can jump 2-300m or more. Q How come the nearby Defence force hasn’t been asked to assist? A DFES have advised them of the situation with the fire but they are not required to assist at this point in time Q Where do all the fire fighters come from? Everywhere? A Many places including locally, the Perth metro area, Geraldton, Serpentine and further afield. There are both volunteers and paid fire fighters. At this stage they are starting to get fatigued. They are doing their best so please be patient. The wind is making it difficult to deal with this fire. Q Is it the start of the fire season? A Essentially yes. There are lots of fires in WA right now which are being coordinated by control centres in Perth. Q How did the fire start? A Don’t really know yet. There is an unconfirmed report that the heat from a mulch pile started the fire but this has yet to be investigated. Q If people have to leave their homes can they come here (the Evacuation Centre)? A Yes or they can go to other family or elsewhere. Other evacuation centres will be opened if more room is required. This may possibly be in Gingin or Two Rocks. No additional locations have been decided yet. Q Is there a hierarchy of the best way to hear communications about the fire? A First and foremost visit www.emergency.wa.gov.au. Following this refer to the DFES Facebook page or tune into ABC Radio. Q Who is controlling the communications for the fire? A DFES is and they are being supported by DBCA and the local Shires (Gingin & Dandaragan). Q When will the next community meeting be held? A Definitely tomorrow and probably around 11am. Q Is there showers at evacuation centre? A Yes. Q How are you going to notify people about next meeting? A Staff at the evacuation centre can advise once a date and time is set or this information will be included in the alert updates from DFES via www.emergency.wa.gov.au.
