25.01.2022 The staff from BePure (NZ) have been working hard at Leeder Analytical learning about GC-Mass Spectrometry instrumentation and maintenance. After completing GCMS component of the intensive training course they are moving onto sample preparation. The BePure staff are learning to derivatise, extract and analyse urine samples for a wide range of organic acids. The data generated from the analysis can provide insight into whether someone has bacterial, yeast or clostridium overgrowth within their intestinal tract. It also provides information around genetic biomarkers and metabolism of amino acid, as well as an indication of nutrient levels.

24.01.2022 Putting the business under the microscope Five years ago, we moved into our new laboratory facilities. Prior to moving in, we had the chance to design a laboratory from scratch. The laboratory was designed to minimise energy use as far as possible. Fitted with low energy consumption LED lighting panels, the insulation on all internal wall and ceilings were doubled, timers on hot water units and energy efficient cooling was installed. 60 solar panels (18kWp) with an estimate...d capacity of 25,000kWh were installed. Apart from reductions in energy consumption other area in the laboratory we also reviewed. One area identified was to scale down solvent extraction volumes. This has halved our use of chlorinated solvents in the laboratory. This reduction has a twofold benefit. These are to halve the amount of waste being generated, disposal cost and also halves the cost of expensive laboratory grade solvents. Over the past 5 years we have estimated that on our solar system alone we have reduced our greenhouse gas emission (GHGE) by 160 tonnes. With low energy lighting and increased insulation this amount would be far greater if taken into account. Reduced operating cost in electricity and reduction in solvent purchase and disposal costs all makes good business sense.

22.01.2022 Leeder Analytical is assisting the food and beverage industry by determining a range of Nitrosamines including N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). Nitrosamines can be produced in food where nitrates which are added as a means of preservation. Also, in the brewing industry nitrosamines can be formed when germinated barley is kilned. Low levels (ppb) of nitrosamines may be present and this requires Leeder Analyticals state of the art instrumentation (GC/MS/MS) to be able detect ...and quantify these trace level compounds. Leeder Analytical can analyse food and beverage including malt, wort or beer for nitrosamine compounds including n-nitrosodimethylamine and other compounds down to ppb levels. This same method can be applied to other food industries such as meat producers. Ensure your food is safe. Call Leeder Analytical on (03) 9481 4167 or email us ([email protected]) to discuss how we can help you.

22.01.2022 Perfluoroalkyl Compounds in personal care products. Pefluoroalkyl Compounds (PFC) are persistent organic compounds which are known to pose human health risks. Leeder Analytical has completed analysing a range of commonly used personal care products such as insect repellents and sunscreens for the presence of PFCs . These matrices are extremely difficult to accurately quantitate. Leeder Analytical analysed all samples in duplicate with great correlation and good surroga...te and spike recoveries. Our method and system blanks are showing our that our procedure and our facility are free of PFCs. For any product testing call Leeder Analytical on (03) 9481 4167 or email us ([email protected]) to discuss how we can help you.

21.01.2022 Leeder Analytical is well known as being technical experts in analytical chemistry. We have a range of consultants, government organisations, industry, etc, who utilise our analytical skills to resolve complex issues, concerns and sometimes curiosities. Supporting our technical knowledge we have the latest state of the art instrumentation within our purpose built laboratory. Earlier this week we have been analysing and refining methodology as part of a Monash University p...roject using our LCMS triple quadruple mass spectrometer. During the same week we have also had a year 10 work experience student from Montmorency Secondary College. She spent the week with us learning about the operation of an analytical chemistry laboratory. She was enthusiastic and interested in what we had to show her. She even had the opportunity to try her hand using some sophisticated analytical instrumentation including GC/MS/MS. Hopefully she will use the knowledge gained from her work experience to help guide her in her future career.

18.01.2022 Perth Fundamentals of Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) training. We were hoping for lovely sunny weather in Perth last week only to be met with showers. The weather felt like Melbourne. Fortunately we were met with a lovely group of people attending the Fundamentals of inductively coupled plasma training at Edith Cowen University (ECU). With varying degrees of experience everyone walked away learning something new. Some participants had never touched an ICP before and were... thrilled with the opportunity. Participants had a great opportunity to apply the theory covered with significant hands on time with the instrument. The training covered atomic spectroscopy theory, Instrument optimisation, identifying and overcoming interferences, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.

14.01.2022 Sewerage Contamination of Water,Groundwater and Sediments. Identification of faecal sterols in water, groundwater and sediment samples can be useful in identifying the presence of sewage contamination and sometimes for the identification of other pollutants. For example a leaking sewer can sometimes impact an aquifer with industrial pollutants such as chlorinated solvents. Faecal sterols as biomarkers provide a valuable tool in the investigation of the sources and fate of fae...cal contamination in the environment. Faecal steroids are excreted by animals and human by-products of digestion of dietary sterols. Identification of faecal contamination in waterways, marine environment and groundwater may be an indicator of run-off, leaking septic tanks and/or leaking sewers. The data obtained can be useful in pin pointing source/s of faecal pollution in our environment. Need further information? Contact us or visit our web link http://leeder-analytical.com/servic/sewerage-contamination/

14.01.2022 This week at Leeder Analytical we were not short of volunteers to sample beer. We ran a panel to taste a range of beers to identify if there were any flavour faults. The tasting panel can help identify what the taint may be prior to doing a targeted analysis in the laboratory. Our panellists were able to describe the flavours they may be able to smell and taste. The panel were requested to taste a range of different beers with one of the beers having a flavour fault. All s...amples are presented to the panellist for assessment without any description of source or good or bad etc. The panel reached consensus on the suspected sample. With a description of the off flavour we now have a starting point for laboratory analysis and resolution to the problem. The suspected sample is now undergoing analysis for a variety of testing in our purpose built laboratory. The remaining beer samples were consumed happily and responsibly by our panel of beer tasters.
