10.01.2022 Hi all, Im often asked what is the best way to treat a snake bite; most people ask if a tourniquet around the limb is the most efficient way to stop the flow of venom. This is incorrect. Whilst a tourniquet will stop the flow of venom, the venom has nowhere to go and can rapidly destroy cells and caus severe nerve, muscle and tissue damage which could lead to necrosis, and amputation in worst case scenarious. In most cases, the venom is injected into the tissues just beneat...h the surface of the skin, which is absorbed by the lymphatic sytem, and then carried through the lymphatic vessels where it is released into the circulatory symstem via subclavian veins around the neck area. The way venom moves around the lymphatic sytem is by movement, eg; running, bending your arms, wriggling your fingers. This is why it is extremely important to stay still! Even the pulsation of our arteries is known to help move the venom around also. This is why its extremely important to stay calm! Good luck with that i say.. easier said than done. The best first aid for snake bite is a pressure bandage applied to the limb. These bandages work as to restrict the flow of venom, not stop it. Keeping still, and calm, is very important, and with the correct first aid, a pressure bandage applied, will by you plenty of time to get to the hospital for the correct treatmeant. Keep in mind it is rare to die from a snake bite these days. If you follow these steps, you are more likely to survive and make a great recovery. If bitten, call ambulance, apply pressure bandage, stay still, and remain calm. I highly recommend these snake bite kits.
