02.01.2022 A Town Called Whitton by Max Taylor My father, Richard (RSM) Taylor, fought in the 1st World War on the Western Front in France. He was in the 45th Battalion. O...n his return home he received a Soldiers Settlers Block at Whitton, 1000 Acres. It started at the Leeton turn-off, about 1 Mile from town, and continued along the Leeton Rd to the next Lane, opposite Bradshaw’s old farm. He milked 70 cows by hand and bred fat lambs the farm was quite successful. About 1936, the year I was born, he sold the farm and bought land in the Main Street of Whitton. He built the Whitton Garage for my older brother Richard to work in as he was very mechanically-minded. He built 2 shops, one each side of the Garage, and 2 houses behind between the Garage and the shop on the left (Eastern side). There was a small area left in which he built a small room, used by the Rural Bank. He rented the shop on the left to Steve Stavro (a Greek fellow from Leeton), and the shop on the right to Mrs Tallentire. On the right-hand side of this shop there was a Pool Room and Barber Shop. (The photos of the Garage and Tallentire’s Shop on this site were supplied by my niece Tanya). Whitton looked like it was really going to go ahead, while Leeton only had the Milk Factory, but then Leeton got the Cannery and Leeton took off. People travelled from Whitton to work in the Cannery, and Leeton kept growing (while Whitton struggled). Mrs Tallentire rented the shop for some years until bad health set in. She had 2 sons Rex and Barry. Rex, the oldest, was a school teacher and moved away; I don’t know where Barry went. My father then rented the shop to Merle Briggs. When Steve Stavro left the other shop and went back to Leeton, my father then ran the shop himself. He later sold it to the Rice family. My brother and father ran the Garage for some years, then my brother Richard was called for Army duties and went to fight in New Guinea. Dad carried on for a while, then rented and later sold to Jacky Asimus. Jacky ran it for a lot of years, then went back to the family farm. He sold it to two chaps from Leeton (Barry Wells I think and a partner). When Dad passed away my mother sold the rest of the property to the Rice family. My brother married and moved to a Garage in Sydney. My youngest sister Beryl was a music teacher in Whitton, then later married and moved to the NSW Central Coast, with my mother also moving there too. During Dad’s life in Whitton he was Community Magistrate his photo is in the old Court House (above the bench). There was never much crime in those days He also built a fence from the back of the Post Office fence to the Tennis Court, then planted Peppercorn Trees on the inside, thus making it a Park. On Saturday afternoons he organised Sports there for the kids. That remains the Memorial Park today. He lived for Whitton. See more
