24.01.2022 Taroom & Wandoan map for Cattle Downs

24.01.2022 *July Garden Day* Mike Wells has asked that you bring a sample of your soil, and also your bore water, if you use it in your garden.

24.01.2022 Hi Everyone, our little garden clubs needs nominations for the following positions - photographer/social Media report post garden day - Sue is giving up her role. Secretary/Treasurer- role includes banking money, selling raffle tickets and carting all the gear to Garden Days/storing it. Helping president prepare, paying bills. Presidents Role - organizing guest Speakers and Gardens, bus, prizes, email reminders and reports, lucky door tickets and raffles on the day. Prepari...ng lunch for guest speakers or asking the host to. In Town Signatories - this is a minor role that anyone in town can do. Ayla Bell has agreed to be one. This role is simply a support role to the treasurer, we would like one more person who lives in town to take on a signatory position to make it easier to get money out to pay bills and top up petty cash. Jess is resigning from her position and Emily is happy to either Stand aside or continue in her position as Sec/Treasurer depending on nominees. She doesn’t particularly want to commit to the president position. We feel it would be best that one of these major positions is filled by someone who doesn’t have very young children (school aged would be fine. Please send us a message if you are interested in any of these positions as an individual or even a group! Em and Jess.

23.01.2022 Good morning, Our June garden day is fast approaching! The day will be held in Erica Perrett’s garden at Cattle Downs, on Wednesday 10th June, starting at 10am. I will send a map to help you find your way. Due to COVID-19 things will be a little different. We ask that you practise social distancing and we won’t be setting up the tea/coffee table. You can either bring your own or we have the Taroom kindy coffee/sweet van attending the day so you can get your coffee fix by pur...chasing a coffee with them. There is also a change to the program with our speaker as Bernadine from Jenny Wren plants at Goondiwindi lives in NSW so she is unable to travel to us. In her replacement we have managed to get our April speaker, John Downes to attend. John will be speaking on lawn health & water science. Don’t forget the usual items; name badge, chair & lunch. We will do a lucky door prize for the day. We are looking forward to a great day out! Jess & Em

22.01.2022 Dumbarton Garden Day Our last garden club meeting was held on Wednesday, 11th November at Dumbarton, which is the home of the Cann family. Max & Kellianne bought the property in 2013. The large garden was well established with lawns, large trees & many roses. Water is supplied from a very good bore. Kellianne has added her touch since moving here. She enjoys using rustic garden ornaments & old bits of equipment from yesteryear. Kellianne has caught the barb wire bug. The...re were quite a few pieces of barb wire art & metal flowers scattered throughout. The latest project has been planting fruit trees. AGM President Jess commented on what a difficult year 2020 has been. Even so we managed to have 5 garden days out of the 8 arranged. Guest speakers for the year were Clem & Chris Boughem (bees), John Downes (lawns), Mike Wells (all things horticultural) & lastly Bloss Perrett (permaculture). All positions were declared vacant. In 2021, three ladies are going to share the presidential role. They are Susie Speed, Erica Perrett & Deidre Jounquay. Secretary/Treasurer is Nell Blackley. Christie McLennan has taken on the PR role (with photographic support from Tracee Hay and Sue Presho). Following the meeting, members enjoyed an impressive share lunch of finger food. Max’s aunts, Edna Zell & Marion Webster were visiting for the day with their families. We were honoured that they cut the Christmas cakes to celebrate the end of another year. Thank you to Nell & Sue for making the cakes. Garden Day dates for 2021 are: March Susie Speed at Tangalooma April Emily Maller at Warraoona May Di Griffin at Sydeva June TBA. Put your hand up if you would like to host. July Tracey Simmons at Woodine August No Garden day September Jo Lethbridge at YoYo October Kristy Hawkins at Speculation November Kirsty Twidale at Bauhinia Vale Merry Christmas to all. We look forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming Garden Days in 2021.

20.01.2022 Members of the Leichhardt Garden Club enjoyed visiting Erica & Harry Perrett’s garden at Cattle Downs yesterday. The garden is a wonderful open plan space with a large Santa Anna couch lawn, established trees & uninterrupted views to the paddocks & beyond. Erica has a large collection of quirky art pieces & plants that flower & many have exquisite perfume. Our guest speaker was John Downes from Roma. He specialises in lawn health & water science. In opening John suggested w...Continue reading

20.01.2022 The Leichhardt Garden Club garden day was held at Ted & Catherine Perrett’s property, Bottle Tree Hills, Taroom on Wednesday, October 7th. Catherine gave a brief talk on her garden & about what has happened there during the past 5 years. Catherine’s roses were putting on a spectacular show, out in full bloom & strategically placed near the front steps & scattered throughout various garden beds. It is aptly so that the garden has three bottle trees in it. Ted & Catherine ha...ve also planted two bottle trees at their roadside entrance to enhance the property sign. We are all looking forward to another visit down the track to see you additional progress Ted & Catherine, especially once you establish your back garden. Our guest speaker for the day was Bloss Perrett, who lives in the Rolleston area. Bloss gave a very informative talk on her practice of permaculture, which she passionately carries out within her home garden & on the property. Her goal is eventually be totally self sufficient. With the use of a white board, Bloss drew illustrations of her garden, the food forest & her use of composting designs. Bloss maintained a well structured environment should all function, compliment & enhance each other. Bloss is passionate about composting & improving our soils. She maintains if our soil has the correct balance of trace elements, carbon & nutrients, we should have stronger & healthier plants, which then should not be as susceptible to insects & diseases. She also emphasized the importance of mulch & organic matter, to get all the organisms active within our soils. Bloss spoke on how to build compost mounds within your chook house. She recommended feeding your kitchen scraps to the chooks & let them add ‘their bit’ in the form of manure. Build your first mound directly under the roost. Proceed to turn & build, until you have 5-6 mounds at separate stages of the process. This is all prompted along by your share farmers, the chooks! If you find this a bit hard to comprehend, look up permaculture chicken composting system. Some of Bloss’s other tips on composting are the importance of keeping the right balance of carbon & nitrogen. The completed compost article should hold moisture & be the colour of 70% dark chocolate. The lucky door prize was won by Val Neilsen. The multi draw winners were Paige, Bloss & Chris. Our final garden day is the Christmas break up. This year it is at Kelliann Cann’s garden on Wednesday, 11th November. Watch out for upcoming details on how to get there & what you need to bring. 15.01.2022 Everyone: Let me know if you would like any basil seedlings. I have lots popping up in my veggie patch and will bring them to Catherine’s garden day next week.

15.01.2022 Hi Everyone, here are my notes from Mike Wells' presentation. Mike lives in Toowoomba & is a TAFE Horticultural Educator. He also has his own consultancy - Wellsley Horticultural. The topic of Mike’s presentation was Plants for a Changing Climate & Soils. The climate is not as predictable now as it used to be. Climate change is real whether it is a natural phenomenon or caused by humans. Extremes are becoming the norm. We have to adapt & think about what we can do in o...Continue reading

13.01.2022 Garden day for this month was held yesterday at Ridgewood, the home of Helen & Peter McClennan. The Ridgewood house & garden has had an extensive renovation. Helen gave a brief run-down about how her garden has evolved over the years. The house is situated on one of the higher hills around & has amazing 360 degree views. Helen takes pride in her beautiful lawn. It is enhanced by cleverly placed garden beds that don't block the views. In amongst all this are lots of 'ol...d bits & pieces' including an old car. Helen's latest passion - creative garden art is everywhere. There are barbed wire hats & balls, cement chookies & beautiful metal flowers to mention a few. Helen with the help of her family has created a gravel creek bed using local sandstone & gravel sourced from Yuleba Quarry. Most of the plants in the garden will tolerate dry conditions. Many have been collected from other people's gardens. Guest speaker for the day was Mike Wells who is the horticultural educator at TAFE in Toowoomba. He has a consultancy business Wellsley Horticultural & you can hear him every second Saturday on Southern Queensland ABC garden hour. Mike spoke about soil & plants for a changing climate. I will do another post from Mike's presentation, hopefully over the weekend. A multi-draw raffle was run. Successful ticket holders were Deidre Jounquay, Eliza Bryant, Leslie Moore, Tracee Hay, Alida Slattery, Kelli-ann Cann, Amanda Batterham, Melissa Hopkins, Jess Oliver, Julie Bassingthwaite & Nell Blackley. Once again, a big thank you must go to the Taroom Kindy who had delicious cakes, muffins & coffee available for morning tea. There is no garden day in August. The next garden day will be 2nd September at Emily Lawson's garden at "Warrawoona" which is in the Grosmont district. Moorelands Nursery from Roma will be attending.

09.01.2022 As most of you would have probably heard, our wonderful gardening friend, Adam Clark passed away on Sunday. Adam was such a wealth of knowledge and a wonderful person and community members. He will be hugely missed and our thoughts and condolences are with his family and Dot at this time. Sending our love.

07.01.2022 Thank you to the Taroom Kindy for supplying us with delicious coffee & cake yesterday at our garden day.

06.01.2022 Hi All Sad news for you all today. We have to postpone the Warrawoona Garden Day. This is due to the most recent Covid restrictions which came into place this morning at 8am and as Warrawoona is in the Western Downs Region and a private residence no more than 10 people can gather. I have been talking to the WDR Council and discussed in detail the restrictions We will push to do the last 3 Garden days by the end of the year once restrictions are lifted again. Emily Maller ha...s worked so hard to get her new garden growing in the at 18months and I know she will be disappointed. Hopefully Em can get a video together of her and Todd's progress in the next few days and reschedule a day out for everyone later in the month or when the restrictions ease again (fingers crossed it's not too far away). Helen from Moorelands Nursery have said that if there is a particular plant you want and annuals then they would box them up and send them over with someone who might be traveling to Roma in the near future with an empty horse float or trailer on their return trip. I have also said they could definitely come for the next garden day or perhaps if the Markets are on at the end of September they may be able to come to that. Helen also said if you could be very specific with the name of plants that would be great because there are many different varieties of things like Horthornes. Email me back with your requests and I can forward them onto Helen or contact Moorlands Directly on 0428222069Follow their facebook page "Moorelands Bush Nursery" and pay them a visit in person! As of last weekend "Bec's Chopping Board" has opened at Moorelands Every Saturday and Sunday from 8am-2pm for Breakfast, Morning Tea and Lunch! Hopefully we will be back on board soon Kind Regards Emily and Jess Moorelands Bush Nursery
