25.01.2022 This snack will make you hungry (see image). We call this empty calories because there are plenty of calories there, just no nutrition. The conversation tends to go a bit like this: -- Brain: "Im out of blood sugar man, I need some snacks" Gut: "There was a great snack in the kitchen before"... Brain: "Really? Did it have lots of energy in it?" Gut: "Yeah it looked pretty loaded" Brain: "Cool, lets it eat." ----Eating takes place---- Brain: "Whoa, I feel so much better!" Gut: "I do too, kind of..." Brain: "What do you mean kind of?" Gut: "Well, I just sort of feel unsatisfied... I enjoyed the snack but I didnt find any nutrients in it..." Brain: "Well, we can just eat more if it will help?" Gut: "Yeah it might, lets go find some more stuff like that" -- Get the picture? The snack had plenty of energy, just no nutrition which means your body will search for more food. Vicious circle. Eat well and eat regularly to stay in control of your blood sugar.

11.01.2022 Hey guys, heres a post on specific stretching for runners I promised yesterday: Due to the fact that distance running (or jogging) is a repetitive movement, similar muscle groups are used over and over again. Contrary to what may feel natural, the hamstrings are usually not the muscles in most need of a stretch before or after a run. Try stretching your quads & calves and using a foam roller on the side of your leg (the ITB) before & after your next few running sessions and... see how you feel. If having stretched the muscles which feel tight only (from the previous post), with little success - there may a deeper reason for them being tight other than simple use. So if working on the calves, quads & ITB dont do it, you may need more detailed attention.

10.01.2022 Bondi Beach 1:30pm: Crystal blue water below, bright orange sun above. 20minutes in the sun on a lunchbreak had me suitably reconnected with nature and a nice dose of Vitamin D. Back on the computer 3:00pm: Wow, I feel creative, that work that I thought would take me all afternoon and possibly tomorrow only took 2hrs. When was the last time you took a PROPER lunch break, sat in the sun, let the stress slide off and connected with the bigger picture? Its more productive... than many think :)

08.01.2022 Did you know: The body tends to do its physical repair from 10pm-2am and its psychological repair from 2am-6am. Where do you get most of your zzzs? If youre doing exercise on a regular basis getting to bed on time will help you recover faster and get better results.

05.01.2022 Omega 3 fatty acid is an Essential fatty acid. Essential means we need to acquire it from our diets on a daily basis. When eating fats - which are incredibly important for the function of the immune system, nervous system and human body as a whole - choose products from a clean source because fats also act as toxin storage. Choose organic eggs, leafy greens, walnuts and fish (the small, and wild caught varieties) for a good hit of Omega 3s and watch your mental performance soar.

02.01.2022 Sugar: Whats in a name? (Part 2) Im learning a foreign language at the moment and thought Id share something relevant. The word hello in english is essentially a well intended greeting. Other cultures dont say hello, they say things like: Hola (Spanish), Zdravei (Bulgarian), Haai (Afrikaans), Bonjour (French). ... Sugar is essentially the same. Regardless of the sound that comes out of our mouths when we say it or the way we spell it, it is a nasty little ingredient that causes a spike in our blood sugar which has many detrimental effects on our fitness and health. Here are a few of the most common hidden names that sugar uses to hide in your packaged food. Sucrose Maltose Dextrose Fructose Glucose Galactose Lactose High fructose corn syrup Glucose solids Did anyone see any of the above?

02.01.2022 Water: Everyone knows we need to drink it, but how much and what type? ---- How much? Heres a simple formula to help you work out how much water you should work up to consuming on a daily basis. ... Bodyweight (in Kgs) x 0.033 = Amount of Water (in Litres) So for me, that would be 65kg x 0.033 = 2.1 Litres of Water / day. If youre doing vigorous exercise, you should also add (approximately) another 1L of water for each hour of exercise you do. ---- What type? The quality, not only the quantity of water you are consuming is very important to your long term health. Ideally, aim to consume water that is from a natural source or has been filtered to remove chlorine, fluoride and any possible bugs. The most sustainable solution for us city dwellers is to invest in a good quality water filter to install on our tap at home - comment below for a list of some good brands if youre keen for more info. If buying bottled water, glass bottles are the best option if possible, as water left in plastic too long can affect the hormonal system. Another consideration if purchasing water is to try to go with a Carbon Neutral water brand. Good quality bottled water has a TDS (total dissolved solids - minerals etc...) rating of 300+ ppm (parts per million). For correct electrolyte balance its also a good idea to add a pinch of high quality natural sea salt to each litre of water. The amount of salt each person requires will differ so just go by taste - the water should not taste salty after the pinch of salt has been added. If it does, reduce the amount of salt you add next time. Post below for any questions or comments about water.
