16.01.2022 "The Victorian Government undertook an extensive process in the development of the bill including an inquiry, significant research and meaningful consultation with survivor-advocates. The resulting bill is of an incredibly high standard, surpassing any similar legislation developed in Australia to date." By passing this legislation, Victoria has a chance to lead the way globally in protecting the human rights of our sexually and gender diverse communities from incredibly harmful practices based on false and misleading claims, - Thorne Harbour Health CEO Simon Ruth

15.01.2022 Our experience is that the ability of laws to stop harm against LGBTQA+ people and effect real change is critically dependent on the extent to which policymakers consult with survivors, We have years of experience in international analysis, research, anecdotal case studies, and policy development. Even well-intentioned laws can miss some nuanced ways in which conversion ideology and practices occur.... - Chris Csabs from @SOCEsurvivors Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Change Efforts (SOGICE) Survivors on the importance of community consultation as Victoria joins other states in introducing legislation to ban conversion therapy

13.01.2022 The first step to prevent untold harm The LGBTIQ Legal Service at St Kilda Legal Service welcomes the passing of the Change or Suppression (Conversion) Practices Protection Bill 2000 yesterday. If passed, these laws will help prevent the untold severe pain and suffering on lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender diverse (LGBT) persons caused by so-called conversion therapy, often resulting in long-lasting psychological and physical damage.... Tanja Golding, Managing Lawyer at the LGBTIQ Legal Service commented We congratulate the Victorian Government on this long overdue legislation. For too long, LGBT people have been subject to harmful practices, and this is an important step to recognise that everyone deserves to live freely, regardless or who they are and who they love. We call for the Senate to now ensure it passes to become law in Victoria.

01.01.2022 Switchboard Victoria stands in solidarity with all disability activists who are raising concerns over the introduction of independent assessments for the Nation...al Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). These proposed assessments appear, at least at this stage, to be little more than a 20 minute test for people wanting to access NDIS. As disability activists have been saying How could any person’s full needs and capabilities ever be understood in this short test environment? Further, the notion of an ‘independent’ accessor is concerning when people living with a disability and their carers know full well that any relationship of trust needs to be built over time between a person and their healthcare team before any meaningful needs assessment can take place. An ‘independent’ accessor, as currently outlined, will not have this trust with the person they are accessing. There is equally an ongoing concern, that Switchboard holds, about human rights within an assessment model and the need to centre the needs of individuals rather than test for need in a pass/fail binary. At Switchboard we support the social model of disability and like LGBTIQA+ disability activists have been saying, these ‘independent’ NDIS assessments are very worrying. At Switchboard we support the proposal of sending this policy update back out for consultation and allocating funds for paid consultation with LGBTIQA+ people living with a disability and their advocacy bodies. To all those in our LGBTIQA+ communities who are affected by this issue, if you need to talk about it, you can talk to us.
