23.01.2022 The Victorian Government has today recognised Traditional Owners’ deep connection to water with the announcement that the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC) will receive two gigalitres of unallocated water in the Mitchell River. Traditional Owners’ connection to water plays a key part in the The Government’s long term strategy for managing the state’s water resources and builds on legislation that incorporates Aboriginal cultural values into the planning and operation of water resource managers. In my recent engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Latrobe I have had the opportunity to learn more about the importance of the connection to country, including water ways and how this connection is critical in understanding community spirit, health and healing.
20.01.2022 Victoria will establish a new permit system for all domestic travel into the state, helping to support Victoria’s rapid contact tracing efforts and giving Victorians greater certainty when they travel. It will be based on a traffic light system that allows Victoria to designate regions in other parts of Australia as green, orange or red, depending on the coronavirus risk in a particular area. - The new permit system will go live from 5.59pm on Monday, 11 January. Current pe...rmits including transit and worker permits will remain valid, so long as they are consistent with public health’s advice on zones. - A red zone means if you have visited this area in the past 14 days you will not be allowed to enter Victoria without an exception or exemption. If you try to enter Victoria at a land border, you will be turned away. - An orange zone means that you will be able to apply for a permit and will need to take a coronavirus test within 72 hours after arriving in Victoria, isolating both before and after your test, until you receive a negative result. - A green zone means that you will be able to apply for a permit and enter Victoria. Once in Victoria, and as always, you should watch for symptoms and get tested should you feel unwell. Exceptions and exemptions will continue to apply. More information on these, in addition to applications for the new permit system, will be made available through the Service Victoria portal at: www.service.vic.gov.au

17.01.2022 I have heard from LGBTIQ+ people in Latrobe that safety comes first. For some LGBTIQ+ people, fighting to be accepted or to make change within society on top of work and family commitments can lead to fatigue that might get in the way of staying well. Through our engagement with LGBTIQ+ communities we have observed that there is a relationship between past experiences and present interactions. This is often associated with a traumatic experience that can result in ongoing m...ental health implications. It is vital that LGBTIQ+ people in our communities can feel safe and are encouraged to be themselves wherever they are. 15.01.2022 The Year One report released by the Latrobe Valley Asbestos Taskforce (LVAT) has concluded that Latrobe Valley homes are estimated to contain more than double the national average amount of asbestos. Almost three in four (74%) homes in the Latrobe Valley region are likely to contain asbestos significantly higher than the national average of one in three homes. The model developed in the report Estimating the volume of residential asbestos in the Latrobe Valley A model, ...calculates both the quantity of asbestos-containing materials and the most common applications in homes across Baw Shire, Latrobe City, and Wellington Shire. There are four key recommendations, all of which are aimed at reducing the risk of asbestos exposure and saving lives: : Asbestos removal only permitted on residential properties in prescribed circumstances. : Compulsory asbestos awareness training for specified : Notice of intent to undertake demolition work to be made compulsory. : Provision of an Asbestos status certificate/report compulsory on the sale or rental of a residential property built before 1990. In Asbestos Awareness Week, we remember the many lives lost to this dangerous substance and urge people to be mindful of asbestos when doing any home improvement jobs. Asbestos can’t be identified by sight; it needs to be tested and the first step is to contact a licensed asbestos removalist. To find out more visit: https://www.asbestostaskforce.net/ To view the report and Year One recommendations: www.asbestostaskforce.net/publications For information about asbestos and how to manage the risks, go to: www.asbestos.vic.gov.au Latrobe Valley Asbestos Taskforce
14.01.2022 I have recently provided advice to the Victorian Health Minister regarding the proposed Used Lead and Acid Battery Recycling Plant in Hazelwood North. I can see the effect that this proposal is having on some members of the community and want to acknowledge the feelings of distress and fear that people may be experiencing. People are aware that exposure to lead is harmful to human health and that there is no known safe level of lead exposure. Understandably, local commun...ities want to be informed about industrial developments that are occurring, they want to know about potential health and environmental risks, and they are seeking reassurance from government and industry that their health and wellbeing will be protected. It is clear to me that local communities want to work towards a thriving economy where jobs are created, and the region can prosper. They want to achieve this without compromising community health and wellbeing. It is on this basis that I have provided the advice to government. 12.01.2022 I want to respectfully acknowledge Aboriginal people as the Original Custodians of the land we walk on today, the land of the Braiakaulung people of the Gunaikurnai nation and in this and every week pass on my respect to their Elders, past, present, future and emerging. In recent months I have been hearing from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Latrobe. I have learned that there is no single way to engage with all Aboriginal people. People suggested men’s group...s, yarning circles, having a chat under a tree, sharing a feed, going for a walk and meeting with Elders. Reaching out to people in places where they spend their time demonstrates care and interest. #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek Latrobe Health Assembly, Latrobe Community Health Service, Latrobe City Council, We Are Latrobe, Morwell Noticeboard, GippsNews, Gippsland PHN, Latrobe Valley Authority, Victorian Department of Health & Human Services, Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency - VACCA, Ramahyuck District Aboriginal Corporation- Sale, The Gathering Place, GLaWAC
10.01.2022 Recently, Aboriginal people in Latrobe shared a message with us that the solutions to the long-term problems that have impacted their families can be determined at a local level and do not need to be prescribed by governments. We heard about positive steps forward and a desire for more people to work together to address all the social determinants of health for Aboriginal people in Latrobe. During NAIDOC week we are being asked to explore and learn about Indigenous Nation...s, languages and understand their unique place in the cultural heritage of Australia. The more we learn, the more we can understand what has lead us to this place. #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek Latrobe Health Assembly, Latrobe Community Health Service, Latrobe City Council, We Are Latrobe, Morwell Noticeboard GippsNews, Gippsland PHN, Latrobe Valley Authority, Victorian Department of Health & Human Services, Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency - VACCA, Ramahyuck District Aboriginal Corporation- Sale, The Gathering Place, GLaWAC

01.01.2022 Activities of the Office In July I hosted a collaborative workshop with key stakeholders to finalise an action plan focused on improving access to GPs in Latrobe. Released in September, this action plan focuses on four themes; improving training and accreditation pathways for doctors, promoting living and working in the Latrobe Valley, building digital and health literacy, and designing a future business model for general practice that takes the pressure off the emergency d...epartment. This quarter saw the release of two further reports in the series Engagement Inspiration. Insights from LGBTIQ communities and from people experiencing financial stress were published and distributed across Latrobe. Also this quarter, I released my 2020/21 Statement of Intent, made a submission to Latrobe City Council re the Lead battery recycling Plant and provided a letter of support for the expansion of the Drug Court in Regional Victoria. 01.01.2022 The people we've spoken with have talked about the importance of leadership and facilitation. This helped us to clarify our role in helping Aboriginal communities in Latrobe. We were encouraged to have the know-how and judgement to facilitate conversations to bring people out and to step back at the right time to empower others. This requires a degree of skill and ability to understand the needs and readiness of communities #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek...
