13.01.2022 When I was in high school I worked part time in a fruit and vegetable grocer. It always surprised me the number of children (AND adults) were not aware that pea...s grew in a pod! Teaching children about food, how it grows and how it works in the body is a great way to spend time with them and help them become more confident to make healthy choices when it comes to food. Start with getting children involved with planting seeds and helping them to grow in the garden. Giving them a little job like watering them helps them to become more interested in where food comes from. Another tip I have is to let your child become familiar with the process of cooking. Even if they cant communicate yet, talk to them about what you are doing in the kitchen small children are like sponges and take in more than we think they do. When children watch, experience and participate in the cooking process, they are more likely to try new foods and gain a valuable understanding of where good food comes from. They will also gain life skills that will set them up for adult hood. It can be messy and time consuming but the learning experience is priceless. For the fussy eaters, it has been shown that if a child is involved in the preparation of food they are more likely to try the fruits (pun intended!) of their labour a big plus! I also recommend talking about the nourishment certain foods give our bodies like carbohydrates helps us to run and jump, protein helps our bodies and muscles to grow for example to help children to learn what effects groups of foods will have in our bodies. Im lucky enough to be invited to talk at a number of kindergartens and primary schools about food and nutrition and one thing is always clear to me kids love to learn this type of information and get very excited about it. Kids can express anxiety in a ...variety of ways but commonly children may experiences issues with sleep, a need for additional reassurance and complaints of headaches and stomache aches. It can even result in school refusal. Supporting your child and talking to them about these feelings can be a help, the article below gives some great guidelines, however counselling or seeing a child psychologist may be useful in some cases. Supporting sleep and stress response is also very important. Ensuring adequate nutrients and a healthy and varied diet with lots of fresh and whole foods to support them through this is vital. 11.01.2022 One of my ReMed colleagues recently hobbled into my treatment room after undertaking her first MetaFit exercise class. She was in need of some post workout massage to assist with the inevitable muscle soreness. Curious about this relatively new fitness craze I have done a little reading on the workouts and here are my top 3 tips for MetaFit recovery: 1. Allow your body to recover between sessions- Often when we start something new it can become addictive and its very easy t...o over-exert ourselves before we build up our base fitness 2. Be accountable for your own recovery- Yes, you might do 5-10 mins of stretching (if any) post session before you have to run out the door to get to work or pick the kids up. Or meet friends for a coffee to tell them how good Metafit is! Make time for yourself to get on your foam roller (if you dont have one, I recommend you get one) and stretch! Stretches should be held for at least 30 seconds with controlled breathing- the idea here is to return the muscles to their original length. 3. Introduce Magnesium supplement- Magnesium is an essential building block for hundreds of chemical processes in the body. Your muscles ability to contract and relax is highly dependent on how much magnesium your body is getting.
