24.01.2022 There has been a lot more media coverage on Domestic Violence over the past few months - because of the increase in it, from new and increased funding from the government, from Dame Quentin Bryce's report and from people like Rosie Batty (Australian of the year) speaking publicly and writing books about DV. As someone who has been working with Men for many years, in the capacity as a Men's Group Facilitator and Counsellor/Psychotherapist, I have witnessed many Men struggling... with their emotions, behaviour, guilt, shame and ignorance around Domestic Violence. It is a huge topic to get to grips with. The statistics are alarming. Much of what I am hearing and reading is very positive in terms of getting the message out and protecting women. What I would also really like to see is much more focus on working with Men directly to PREVENT DV. I know from my many years of experience in working with Men, that with a good facilitator helping and supporting them to Explore, Discover, Face and Work with their emotions, behaviour, guilt and shame and all the other things that are involved, then they become much better Men and are more likely to both, stop being violent and also stand up to help stop DV. In many of the organisations that work with DV, the men involved have either not stepped into a Men’s Group or Circle or attended to their own emotions, actions, guilt and shame about DV. I am not saying that all Men are guilty of Domestic Violence. What I am saying is that we all, as men have the tendency to be violent and it is good to explore and understand it both for our own growth and to be more able to understand and support other men who are dealing with it. It is one of my frustrations with the current DV issue, that there is not more grass roots, hands on, inter-active, preventative work being done with Men. I know that the old argument is that Men simply won’t go, or do not want to do this work, but if we are serious about stemming the tide of DV, it is probably essential that this happens. Despite more money, time and energy going into stopping it, DV is on the rise. To date (24/09/2015) there have been 62 reported deaths connected to DV this year alone in Australia. Last night I heard Rosie Batty speak in Brisbane. Her story, along with the many hundreds and thousands of other stories from Women who have experienced DV, should be enough to alert us all to this epidemic. Much is needed to be done to stop DV. There needs to be much more focus and education (and even laws) around film censorship and what is or is not suitable. The TV is full of offensive, sexually orientated advertising and violence focused movies. Even violence on the field in sport is not condemned by many of the sports commentators... I could go on it is such a big topic. In essence, I am here for the long haul to help stop DV in all forms. If I can support anyone reading this in any way, please contact me. www.AdrianHanks.com

21.01.2022 Mention the words - DOMESTIC VIOLENCE and it brings up so many different responses, reactions and emotions. Being, probably, the single most common community issue right now both in Australia and globally, it touches us all in one way or another. For some it is deep, for others not so much. These past few weeks have been very interesting. There has been so much social media (FB) support, predominantly from women, but also from some men too, which has given me more determinat...ion and strength to continue.
