05.01.2022 I’ll start with an apology, but it’ll be the last one you get. I say that because there’ll be parts of this post that might strike you as, how should I put this, a little blunt Blunt, opinionated, confronting, downright judgemental. Take your pick.... I’m just happy if they do strike you. I want a reaction, and if you’re my target audience, then you need one. My theory is the truth can hurt, but not nearly as much as living a lie. What’s the lie? Either you don’t believe that health and happiness are closely linked (a link that only gets stronger as we age) or you are aware of that, but somehow think things will change without you having to make a change. In other words, the good old Albert Einstein definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results". Even if you aren’t thinking about the results, if you’re at, or approaching middle age (what I like to call the ‘post-prime’ or ‘off-peak’ period)... ...then you’ve got year upon year upon year of doing the same thing over and over. Quite often that ‘thing’, in terms of the most important gift you (and your family) possess your health - is not much at all. Not much outside of work, domestic duties and recreation of the stationary, drink-in-hand, Netflix-on kind. Going with the flow basically. I’ll admit the demands of modern life create a strong bloody flow, but that makes our choices all the more crucial. That flow is leading somewhere, and I can promise you it’s not a long and healthy life. I’m 50 years of age And as well as attaining the knowledge...(the accumulation of trying, failing and retaining what works) ...the other thing that comes with a big number like that is perspective. A perspective that boils down to a couple of simple facts. THE OLDER YOU GET THE MORE IMPORTANT IT IS TO BE SMART ABOUT HOW TO TRAIN ...and more importantly THE LESS TIME YOU'VE GOT TO WASTE. And ‘wasting’ includes doing things you don’t like. As stern as this has sounded so far, enjoyment is at the very heart of what I advocate. You will know if you’re ready to create change in your life. You’ll know. I know you’ll know. How? - If fitness is already a big part of your life - your recreation - If you prefer to ride to the shop rather than drive - If you feel restless when you’re sitting still If you’ve got energy from daylight to dark, then move along. (Unless you want to renew your vows so to speak.) IF, on the other hand... - your waist size starts with a 4, - the last bike you owned was a Malvern Star - and your only involvement with sport is of the Fox-variety, we’ve got things to do.
