22.01.2022 After 42 years on a Riverslea dairy farm, Trish Vardy resides in nearby Maffra. Sadly, her husband died shortly after they moved into town, but Trish keeps busy with family and community activities. She has regular contact with her three adult children, their spouses and her five delightful grandchildren. Maffra is a close community and entertaining for lunch or dinner remains popular with Trishs age group. Trish has always been interested in gardening and, besides tending to her own garden, is often involved working in and enjoying her son and daughter-in-laws garden, The Barn, in the Bickleigh Vale Village at Mooroolbark. Open Garden days are held in this beautiful area that was set up by noted garden designer, Edna Walling. Trish enjoys meeting new people and over the years has made many, many friends. 21.01.2022 Jenny was born in Melbourne but has lived rurally for much of her life. Art was an early experience, and Jenny has used it to communicate, explore, enrich and bring joy to others and herself. Applications have ranged from exhibitions to working as an Artist in Residence with culturally diverse groups in both small and large festivals. Her sculptural practice has a quirky side, with materials including copper, recycled materials, paper and stainless steel. An art teacher in secondary and tertiary colleges for many years, Jenny is currently working on an exhibition, running a small dress label, and participating in an environment and sustainability group. 15.01.2022 During testing times like these, when people are facing risks and suffering losses as a result of the fires raging in East Gippsland and elsewhere, stories of remarkable Gippsland women overcoming numerous obstacles matter even more. We begin 2020 by sharing the story of Vivienne Young, a felt maker, and refired (not retired) wool grower. She now lives in Orbost in East Gippsland with no sheep but lots of wool to play with. Vivienne loves the fibre and continues to spin, knit, dye and felt with it. Felting took her to Mongolia for three years to teach the basic skill to women in Govi Altai. Vivienne maintains a connection with these wonderful people. She enjoys passing her skills on to the next generation wherever she goes.

14.01.2022 If you ask Jean Downs what she has done with her life, she will probably say not much, because Jean is a quiet-living woman going about her daily life. Jean, who lives in the dairy town of Maffra, in East Gippsland, left school at age 15 to start work. Years later, her involvement in the Gippsland Womens Network art and community project presented opportunities for Jean to learn new skills, meet new people, and to live a truly fulfilling and purposeful life. In her own unobtrusive way, Jean seized the day. Here is her story.

14.01.2022 Tomorrow, the local public library is temporarily closing its doors to the public due to COVID-19. Upon reading this news in an email today, I fast racked to ...the library and came home with this bundle of books--seems a good time to try new authors. I like murder mysteries, detective series _ Ive read all titles by Lee Childs, Patricia Cornwell, Jonathan Kellerman and ilk. After I read these books (I prefer hard copies), I can download e-books, which will be a wonderful Plan B. Recommendations for new authors/titles welcome. Books are a great coping tool, brain nourishment, diversion, and escape. See more

12.01.2022 Born in England in 1955, Sue Kemsley came to Australia with her immediate family, but not her grandmother. Sue missed having a relationship with her grandmother and this gave her an understanding of internal conflict, loss and displacement. She has collected and practised a myriad of self-soothing and anxiety management strategies over the years and enjoys sharing those strategies with others. She has a BA in Social Science, a Diploma of Teaching, and relationship counselling qualifications. Sue also loves the mechanisms of the body and so Reiki, massage and healing techniques are part of her life. Being self-sufficient, leaving a minimal footprint, and contributing or giving back are important to Sue. Click through to read Sues story.

12.01.2022 They wanted food to put on their table, they wanted to clothe their children, and they wanted the means to meet the costs of so-called free education. This was not a third-world country this was a description of Australian farm women in the 1970s. In Gippsland, courageous dairy farmer Mary Salce spoke up, giving the women a voice, leading to the establishment of the Gippsland Womens Network. 08.01.2022 Together, we will get through this challenging time with COVID-19. I have found comfort in this poem and illustration written by Karyn Braveheart, and hope you do, too. Gone Viral Spreading... Contagious Bloody outrageous Whats going on? All the goodness has gone All the things that we need Due to individual greed Well, dont think youre safe Dont think you will succeed. In the big, big, picture We do not need to panic We do not need to cry Or store food in the attic What do we need? Just to quieten our minds Look out for our loved ones Be respectful and kind. Take care of our pets Our neighbours, our homes Make it a haven When feeling alone. Gone viral Its a spiral We never expected But this is the time Everyone should feel respected. Listen to our leaders They are doing their best But they are not God So, let Him do the rest. Gone viral Contagious Is our love From the heart Appreciation For loved ones Feeling so far apart. For those who are sick For those who are grieving Hold onto your faith We need something to believe in. Gone viral Is my love for you Whoever you are May you feel the love too.

08.01.2022 Highlight today was midday walk with Maisie we were walking in nearby residential street with granddaughter Amelia, 8, on FaceTime accompanying us, when I spo...tted a pink piglet in the driveway of a house it was wandering around happily, with its snout a little dirty from digging in the front flower bed, and the house owner, an elderly woman (her shape reminded me of a cheery Polly put the Kettle on) waddled out and invited Maisie to say hi to the pig, assuring me it was friendly but I politely declined --- the woman said Piglets name was Charlie, and Charlie will grow to 300kg. I said thats impressive, and moved on as fast as I could, wondering how long it will be before Piglet/Charlie ends up on someones plate. Amelia was quite amused with our midday walk.Small things are big things in this time of social and physical restriction. See more
