24.01.2022 Couldnt find an oyster ceiling light to fit client wishes. What do you do? Just refurbished the old ones Thanks to Mark @ ecliptical designs

24.01.2022 Its not an uncommon sight nowadays. Stacks of discarded fluorescent troffers Making way for the LeD retrofit. Questions may be asked of the efficacy of such decisions but who can slow the change of technology?

19.01.2022 My submissions to vivid were not short listed a tad disappointed but that is last year. Currently on holidays in the windy west. The skyline has changed and the river foreshore as well. New building design still doesnt account for the fierce sun in the west This is the new BHP Billiton building with the poor office workers battling the afternoon glare from the s,umber sun

19.01.2022 Here is a column being constructed by my friend mark @ elliptical design for the entrance of a new business park off the Princess Hwy, fabricated in stainless steel and lit with leds as you move around it sparkles like crazy

18.01.2022 Measurement of perception: the next installment in Green light Expo Shanghai As a lighting design graduate I was interested less in the tech side of the expo and more in the design side, so I attended the session Lighting application based on human visual perception delivered by Hiroyuki Shinoda; Professor, Dept of Human and Computer Intelligence, College of Information Science and Engineering, Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto Japan. Hiroyuki outlined the movement toward rev...Continue reading

18.01.2022 This is a given when you work in film and tv, Lights value is diminished by uniform illumination, becoming shadowless and dead But in architecture of commercial spaces uniformity is often paramount, primarily because of relationship with electrical engineering and maintaining standards, please allow us some contrast to stimulate the senses!

18.01.2022 The tyranny of chandelier lighting, if your not lighting the prisms, then your not refracting light, then the chandelier wont appear to sparkle as its meant too. See how the bottom of the luminarie looks dull without sparkle? For more ideas about lighting visit www.lightbureau.com.au

17.01.2022 I had the opportunity to attend the Cree demonstration at Novotel in Homebush on tuesday night. After some disconcerting moments in China it was good to hear a variation of The "LEDS will rule the world" theme. The variation being that Cree will market their leds with a +9 CRI, an issue that has had many lighting designers reticent to to include LEDs in their interior lighting designs. The demo was mainly for the introduction of their new recessed commercial fluorescent ...replacement, The CR series . Great idea to use an indirect lighting method which allows the head sink to be exposed to the internal room environment, rether cooped up in internal ceiling space, where air flow is rather restricted. Of course the promotion and figures came thick and fast, as in China, but luckily there were enough professional people in the room to ask pertinent questions that deflate the hype somewhat . 16.01.2022 Today was the last day of my Masters Course, presented a lighting masterplan for George Street (post light rail introduction) to City of Sydney Urban Designers. Fingers crossed, if the wheels turn enough may get to pitch to Clover Moore.

16.01.2022 As you rush south in hectic traffic along the princess hwy, just before the entrance to the royal national park, you may catch a fleeting glimpse of the sandstone faade that was Sydneys first YMCA, (Pitt street 1885), Now erected at Sydneys tramway museum in Loftus. Seemingly out of context in this urban bush land setting the imposing faade tweaked with me as an opportunity for playful experimentation in faade lighting. Read more at www.lightbureau.com.au

14.01.2022 Quick visit to Vivid Sydney, great autumn weather( even though its one officially winter), great crowds. The projections of course are the show stoppers but left wondering how far artists can take this medium. Its best viewed from Dawes point were you get a panorama of the city and the lasers on the circular quay buildings seem to give the whole picture

14.01.2022 Parklight, was the 4th exterior lighting event organized by the NSW IES lighting society and the first to be run in conjunction with Sydney Universitys Department of Illumination. It assembled together over 50 eager participants; lighting designers, architects, students and lighting suppliers to meet, discuss and experiment with lighting techniques and the equipment used in exterior lighting.

13.01.2022 here on the Gold Coast Im not sure how electrical engineers get away with it (I cant say lighting designers for the fact that there is no design element of any worth). To apply light to a building in such a manner is a disgrace to the night environment. I couldnt stand living in one of the lower floor apartments Can you I imagine standing on the balcony looking toward the ocean at night? With a massive spotlight punctuating your view!

13.01.2022 Its hilarious that the 3-D visualisation/realisation developers add a smokey haze/atmosphere to locations like art galleries which of course wouldnt have them. As a film lighting practitioner I can vouch for how much atmosphere the Americans like to add, even for realist drama. As the light we see is only reflected light, then how do you sell a sharp beam spotlight in its normal use? You fake it of course! https://youtu.be/8Da6DHVK17M

05.01.2022 Currently, the majority of the data to be found on the Internet is placed there by humans. Within 5 years that number will be dwarfed by the amount of data put there by machines. Put there without any need for human interaction. Put there to be accessed As the earlier blog noted, increased urbanisation of the worlds population will lead to increasing demand for road and public space lighting. Sustainability is the driving force behind market growth. LED can dominate b...Continue reading
