25.01.2022 Hearing loss over the age of 55 is quite common. While age-related hearing loss can be quite gradual, you might notice an elderly family member has their television turned up high or that they have trouble hearing your phone conversations. If someone you love is experiencing issues with their hearing, the first step is to see a GP for an examination. Here are a few tips for communicating better with those you know suffering from hearing loss. Use written notes for important... conversations to avoid misunderstandings that could be dangerous. Avoid having conversations in noisy environments. Make sure you look directly at the person when speaking to them. Install visual smoke detectors that have lights as well noise alarms. 19.01.2022 It has been one year since our inspiration, our founder's mother-in-law, passed away surrounded by her loving family in her own home at the age of 92. 18.01.2022 I know that I love jigsaw puzzles and can remember having one out on the card table at home as I was growing up. They really are an activity for all ages. 17.01.2022 While the weather is turning cooler, the sun is still coming out and fresh air in the garden is a wonderful remedy for long days spent inside. To stay safe in these uncertain times, the best advice surrounding the prevention of coming in contact with the coronavirus is to remain on your property and keep a good distance from other people. 16.01.2022 Autumn is coming and with that brings cooler temperatures. It is a great time to ensure that your elderly relatives are prepared to stay warm in their homes as the older members of our communities feel the chill easier than the rest of us. Here are a few easy things you can do. Make sure your elderly relative dresses in layers even when they are just staying at home. Bring around some extra blankets to have on the couch, their bed and other favourite spots to rest.... Ensure they are eating and staying hydrated. Plus, there is nothing like a nice cuppa to warm someone up. Close off unused rooms and check that there are no gaps in the windows and doors to the outside. Drafts are a certain way to waste electricity and bring in the cold. Finally, check the thermostat. Make sure it is not set too low. You might feel comfortable at a temperature the elderly would find quite chilly. 14.01.2022 "Focus on the uniqueness of each person and ensure they are respected, valued and heard." While this article is about carers in a residential facility, it is a beautiful reminder to reconnect with the industry on a personal level. And it resonates with us because we believe in this type of care. Our carers get to know our clients and from that personal approach so that the care is tailored to their wants as well as needs. 14.01.2022 While the weather is up and down here in Melbourne, we are bound to experience more extreme heat before summer is over. 13.01.2022 Keeping the home clean is always important, but even more so when trying to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. You don't need to deep clean your house every day, but here are a few things that should be disinfected daily: Door handles Drawer pulls... Sink taps Bench tops and other hard surfaces like the dining table Light switches Stair hand rails Handles on walking frames and other mobility devices Keep in mind that devices like phones, tablets and computers would also be something to clean daily as they get touched a lot, but need special electronic wipes. If you do not have access to those, you may combine 1/2 cup distilled water and 1/2 cup of vinegar into a resealable container and dampen a cloth with the mixture to lightly and carefully wipe down your screens. Do NOT saturate these device and use a microfibre cloth or clean hand towel to dry immediately. 11.01.2022 We need to know staffing numbers in aged care homes to ensure our elderly citizens are safe and cared for. That is just simple, really. And when you are fortunate to be able to age in your own home, you know who is coming to care for you. 11.01.2022 Taking clients out to do their food shopping is a very important part of our jobs. Having the exact brand of bread or being able to select produce in person is something many take for granted. If our clients are unable to make the trip to the store we ensure their requests are met by making a detailed list with them and then following that list. We take pride in the attention to details. 10.01.2022 We know our clients are missing time spent with family. It is so important to keep the physical distance to protect our most vulnerable community members and to flatten the curve, but that does not mean that we have to be socially distant. Pick up the phone and call your elderly friends and family. If they are online already, make sure you video call. We can help our clients to set up digital devices so that they can make and receive these important calls themselves. 08.01.2022 During these unprecedented times, we want to assure our community that the health and safety of our clients remains our top priority. All of our carers are taking the necessary precautions to remain healthy themselves and are as diligent as ever with protocol like hand washing and cleaning of homes. As a company, we are keeping informed with the ever changing government recommendations. If you want to visit with your elderly friends and family members, remember that a phone c...all first is a great idea at this time. As the elderly seem to be the hardest hit by the symptoms of COVID-19, it is best to completely stay away if you or a close family member has been showing any signs of a cold or flu.
