17.01.2022 Soundposts I have retrieved this week! From a double bass and a violin, both in my workshop for restoration. The violin soundpost was barely shaped and still had thick piece of string tied to it. The bass soundpost is stamped 'EDWARD WITHERS' PATENT' and is hollow through its length. ... Both now replaced with well fitting posts made from Alpine spruce, hand split in Bavaria. The middle photo shows another Withers soundpost for a violin that I keep as a curio. Invented by Edward Withers in November 1896, the Patented Hollow Soundpost was short lived and didn't, in practice give the player the tonal advantage claimed. The third photo is of Edward Withers b.1844 d. 1915. He is also credited with the invention of a tubular bass bar, when I find one, I'll let you know. See more
