25.01.2022 Many of you will remember the devastation of the Keilira bushfires near Kingston last summer and the amazing work by a whole range of people including Red Cross to help that community get back on its feet. In continuing that great work, the Red Cross Recovery team led by Linda McCabe will be back in the Region this month to provide a workshop and pamper day for the Keilira women which will include a wellbeing presentation by a mental health professional, an update on the curr...ent fire season as well as a nice lunch. This event is supported by the CFS and other key stakeholders. To also support the day, our Vice Patron, Libby Furner OAM has been busy gathering up pamper packs for the women and we were overwhelmed by the generosity of UFS and Terry White Chemists in Mount Gambier who donated an amazing range of pamper products for the event. UFS donated 30 individual packs of beauty products and Terry White also donated 2 large bags of beauty products for the women to be given out during the pamper sessions and we are very grateful for their support. Thanks also to our amazing Community Support Officer Raelene for her work on the project as well. Shown below are our amazing gifts, further reflecting the power of humanity.
25.01.2022 THANK YOU MILLICENT COMMUNITY A big thank you to the Millicent business community and individuals for their amazing support yesterday at our collective trauma session in Millicent, there is no doubt we saw the true power of humanity at work. To the many individuals who came into the shop to pay forward for coffee and food for the attendees and volunteers, to the incredible Mark and June Pilmore who allowed us to take over their shop and made sure we were ok all day, to the be...autiful Marg Chapple who provided us with a quiet sanctuary when we needed it in her amazing wellness facility, to the fabulous Christina Thompsell from Bank SA for her bank’s financial support and the use of bank facilities if we required them, to the many media outlets who supported us, to Senior Sergeant Rick Errington from SAPOL for his wise counsel and support, to Griffiths Coffee who supplied the store with a bag of coffee beans for the attendees, to Mayor Des Noll and the Wattle Range Council and of course to our amazing Red Cross volunteers and office staff who worked hard to make it all happen, we thank you and salute you. As a follow up, have been asked to go to Beachport as well this week to provide some support to that community and we will advise further once we have a location and some dates and times. We have also been asked to provide a presence in the town following the funerals and once again, we will provide details and locations once we have confirmed them. Thank you to everyone for everything you did in helping to pull our community back together after this tragic event.
22.01.2022 We recently received a beautiful gift of several hand crocheted blankets courtesy of the members of the Mundulla Branch of Red Cross. Branch members crocheted these blankets in their spare time and we were very pleased to hand them over to the residents of Sheoak Lodge in Millicent who appreciate the warmth and colour they provide. A special thank you to all Branch members for the fabulous work you all do on behalf of the most vulnerable in our community. A special thanks als...o to Jane from Sheoak Lodge who made it all possible. Pictured below are some of the residents of Sheoak Lodge enjoying their new blankets. The Power of Humanity
22.01.2022 Our introduction to basic computing classes restarted today at the Red Cross office in Mount Gambier with a big thanks to star volunteer Roger for supplying some of the PC’s and setting them up for the students. It was great to see Eric, Michael, Blandine and Olive back with us today learning about Windows and the Microsoft Office suite from Red Cross facilitator Vincent, who taught classes similar to this in Rwanda. These weekly sessions help our new arrivals improve their d...igital literacy as well as their conversational English which further improves their future job prospects. All of these students are also involved in our pathways to employment program as well. If you are a new arrival and would like to attend these sessions, please contact Vincent on 08 87253622.

18.01.2022 Once upon a time in Campbelltown 1990, a child was given a teddy bear while being treated by the ambulance. This cute bear was a source of calm and comfort, and... from that moment, the Trauma Teddy had an important job to do. One day they would be given to a child who experienced trauma, was sick or upset, and it was their duty to make them feel better. This week we celebrate 30 years of the Trauma Teddy , bringing comfort and joy to over 1 million children in times of distress. Volunteers across Australia lovingly hand-knit these bears, each uniquely different from the next but all with the same purpose - a happy face and a good cuddle in a stressful situation. #TraumaTeddy30 See more

17.01.2022 Naracoorte Branch Activities Last Thursday, the Naracoorte Branch held their annual luncheon to celebrate their end of year fund raising activities with an array of tempting cakes, savouries and good cheer. The Naracoorte ladies do an amazing job with their street raffles, scon a thons and other well thought out fundraising activities which provide much needed funds to allow Red Cross to continue to undertake its humanitarian work across Australia.... While Covid curtailed some activities this year their efforts produced an excellent result once again. Supporting the Naracoorte ladies this year was our amazing VEO Raelene Monger and long term volunteer Ross Parkinson OAM who attempted to maintain some gender balance with the group Pictured immediately below is: Bronte Cobbledick, Pat Keatley and Pat Gericke. 15.01.2022 We had a fabulous time this morning at the Athletes Foot in Mount Gambier. In an amazing show of generosity, franchise owner Paull Smith donated 3 boxes of sports and school shoes to Red Cross for distribution to vulnerable families in the Limestone Coast. Our volunteers will now work with local school staff to identify children that would benefit from a new pair of school or sporting shoes and distribute them accordingly. Thank you so much for supporting the most vulnerable ...in our community Paull. The power of humanity Pictured below is Red Cross Community Support Officer, Raelene and long term volunteer Roger receiving the shoes from Franchisee, Paull Smith.
12.01.2022 Happy 30th Birthday Red Cross Trauma Teddies! Trauma Teddies are cute and cuddly knitted bears that are given to children in their time of need. This could be ...after a bushfire, at a hospital, in an ambulance, or on any number of other occasions. The first teddy was knitted in 1990! In Adelaide our dedicated knitting group was started in 2015, though knitters have been active in the state for many decades and many knitters prefer to knit independently. The Adelaide group has 17 members. The generous ladies meet twice a month and create lovely teddies that provide comfort and help take people's minds off their worries. We are thankful to the Knitting Group for their generosity, dedication and time. To join the group write to [email protected] Link to download the Trauma Teddy Pattern: https://www.redcross.org.au//TraumaTeddy-InfoSheet-A4.pdf. Members pictured (R-L): Janet Chambers; Chris Harvey ; Julie Overy; Kathleen Bach; Mareylene Williams ; Carole Witkowski; Audrey Rucker and Mary Norris. #Traumateddies #AustralianRedCross #redcrosss
11.01.2022 Next week Red Cross volunteers will be in the beautiful township of Kalangadoo to fit free smoke detectors for eligible residents. This important potentially life saving work could not happen without the very generous support of Quell Fire Systems, Banner Mitre 10, Bunnings Warehouse Australia and OGR - O G Roberts & Co and of course our amazing volunteers. All smoke detectors are fitted in accordance with the Building Code of Australia by trained volunteers who will also ins...pect the property for any other potential hazards that the home owner may need to get rectified. If you would like to have a detector/s fitted please contact the Mount Gambier Red Cross office on 8725 3622 to determine your eligibility. 08.01.2022 Great to see our Vietnam Veterans Social Support Group back on the road and enjoying their time together with our Red Cross drivers and companions. We will shortly have a wheelchair access bus in our fleet which means we will be able to take our less ambulant veterans out for social outings which hopefully will reduce their social isolation. If you are a contemporary veteran and would like to join our social support group, please ring our amazing booking officers on 08 872536...22 to arrange a trip. Pictured below are some of our veterans at the Robe Camel Farm where there were not too many savouring the camel milkshake this time. Lest we forget

07.01.2022 We were so pleased to be able to transport the Mount Gambier Allsorts Soccer team to Naracoorte on the weekend to play in their round robin series of games. A big shout out goes to Red Cross Volunteer Driver James, who gave up his Sunday to make it all possible. The event was touted as a Limestone Coast Multicultural Soccer Carnival and was held on Sunday the 15th in Naracoorte. The carnival used sport as a way of celebrating a diverse and harmonious Australia by bringing to...gether people from diverse cultural backgrounds from across the Limestone Coast and South Australia as well. The main purpose of the event was to communicate the message of shared values respect, equality and freedom. Red Cross star player Vincent kicked 4 goals and his brother Olivier kicked 3 goals so they are a pretty formidable team in their own right. Pictured below are Olive, Olivier, Bernice, Rafiki and Suade who all made the trip to Naracoorte. Vincent was taking the photos so is not in the shot.

05.01.2022 Women impacted by the fires in Keilira and Sherwood were positively overwhelmed by the Red Cross pamper day held in early November. Over 10 months on from the ...fires it was important to provide a day that brought women together and allowed overdue conversations to occur. Of course the ladies also received a bit of pampering, something that they said they didn’t even know they needed! "Live music, flower workshop and some pampering goodies - it made it feel like a really special day" "Great to come along and do something for myself for a change" "Fellowship, laughter, relaxation and information", "Enjoyed the Mental Health talks - very informative" Red Cross was supported by the local Kingston District Council and Sue Benson from CRANAplus in running this event.
