25.01.2022 HOSTEL ETIQUETTE My tips on what to do and what not to do in a hostel. In my travels I have spent a bunch of time in shared hostel rooms, mostly I have had great experiences and have met great people, but I have had a few times where I’ve had the unfortunate luck of sharing a room with that one jerk that should have had a class on travel etiquette before they left their country.... Here are a few tips to make sure you are a loved and valued member of you shared hostel room. 1- Please be quiet: During the day, it’s all systems go, stamp those feet and talk as loudly as you want. However between the hours of 10pm through to 7am is hush time, people are trying to sleep and after all it is a bed you booked not a party room. 2- Lights off: Expanding on the theme of 10pm through to 7am, if you need to hop up or do something between those hours, keep the lights off, use your phone light to find what you are looking for, nobody wants to be woken up by the light. 3- Pack your bags the night before: You will never get a sleep in at a hostel, people are up early to catch their flight or train to their next destination, however I always appreciated the people who packed their stuff up the night before and when it came to them leaving they just picked up their stuff and left, the people I didn’t love were the ones next to my bed at 6am russling through their bags and zipping and un zipping them. 4- Avoid plastic bags: We should all be avoiding plastic bags as it is anyway for our planets health, but another reason to avoid them in a shared hostel room is because they make SO MUCH NOISE! If you do need to use them for your dirty clothes, pack them the night before because there is no way to muffle out that noise. 5- Don’t have sex: Pretty simple this one, I don’t need to go into it to much, nobody wants to hear or see it, if you are going to do it, find somewhere else like maybe a private room where there aren’t complete strangers trying to sleep. 6- Headphones: If you want to watch a movie, make sure you have headphones! 7- Stick to your area- It’s not your room, you chose not to book a private room, so don’t spread your stuff everywhere, neatly have your stuff stored at the base of your bed or to the side, not all over the next persons bed. 8- Respect other people cultures and religion: Hostels are amazing places where all sorts of cultures and religions mix in the one spot, always be mindful of how you conduct yourself, travel is about opening yourself different cultures, embrace them all. This is all easy to do, it’s just simply being nice and respectful to others, like our parents taught us when we were young. Follow those tips and you will be remembered as an awesome respectful traveller by the people your shared your dorm with.
