19.01.2022 Last night at our Dinner meeting we were enlightened by Dave Jones, the Roads traffic manager- public policy regarding the complexities of road policy. It really was a fascinating presentation. One of the many benefits of being a Lions Australia member is the community leaders you meet and learn from. Thanks Dave!

05.01.2022 Lions grant used to run training course for unemployed Adult community education provider Pines Learning is helping combat unemployment in the local region with a free course for those in need. Unemployment is a huge problem in the Victorian town of Whittlesea, where 6.24 per cent of the population is jobless compared to the national unemployment rate of 5.7 per cent. One local organisation trying to turn those numbers around is Pines Learning, which runs a Skills To Apply F...or Work course at no cost to the community. The first 12.5-hour course, held in December last year, was free to those who were long-term unemployed or from a disadvantaged or culturally diverse background, thanks to a $1000 Community 100 grant from Lions Australia. Over five weeks, participants learnt how to write resumes, apply for positions and interview well. Underpinning it all was an effort to build their confidence. Often, people have the skills and knowledge to do the job but if theyve been unemployed for a period of time its quite challenging to get to an interview, says Jenny Carson, vocational education and training coordinator for Pines Learning. The money from Lions covered the cost of the trainers and course booklet for all 10 participants. Vermont Lions Club secretary Brad Underhill says the initial grant application from Pines Learning stood out because it was community orientated and helping disadvantaged people learn how to apply and find work. The 27-member club whose other activities include raising money for childhood cancer research and the Cerebral Palsy Education Centre, plus sponsoring disadvantaged children to go on camps at Licola Wilderness Village and supporting a number of domestic violence/womens refuges continues to have a close link to the organisation. Pines were thrilled and have asked us to donate to another training course, Brad says. They also recently celebrated their 40th anniversary and asked us to run their sausage sizzle. Almost six months on, Jenny is keen to run the program again, especially after hearing from participants who are still feeling the benefits. One is Mary*, a single mother and mature-age job seeker. I can proudly boast that it only took a fairly short time to find employment, she says. I definitely credit the course and our awesome teacher for equipping me with a killer resume and thought-out responses to interview questions." Marys now proudly working full-time. Im grateful for the opportunity, she says. As a solo parent of three, money was very tight. The result is that Im now back in the workforce, providing for my family and working in a job I enjoy. Jenny says, I get it a bit emotional when I look at some of these things. And you know whats really nice? Its the fact that these people are grateful. 02.01.2022 Vermont Lions Club are planning a marketing strategy to encourage more people from the Community to join our club. Tell us either: 1. Why you are a Lion, and why you love it? or 2. Why you wouldnt consider joining a Lions Club? or 3. If you were planning to run a membership campaign for a Lions Club, how and where would you target interest from!... Start a conversation!
01.01.2022 Yet another "Proud to be a Lion" moment! Congratulations to the following Lions Clubs for making this project come to life: > Ashwood-Mount Waverley > Blackburn North > Box Hill... > Forest Hill > South Vermont > Vermont > Wheelers Hill > Vermont Lions Ladies Auxiliary See more
