24.01.2022 Some of the images on Pedro Bells original cover for the 1981 Funkadelic album, The Electric Spanking of War Babies, raised alarm at Warner Bros. Records. I made a mess of money on that one, he later said. They paid me to censor the cover.

24.01.2022 George Clinton was especially fond of what Pedro Bell came up with for Funkadelics Standing on the Verge of Getting It On (1974): an alien landscape that was both scary and whimsical. It was a combination of Ralph Bakshi and Samuel R. Delany and Superfly and Fat Albert and Philip K. Dick and Krazy Kat and Flash Gordon, he wrote in his autobiography, all mixed together in Pedros brain with some kind of blender that hadnt even been invented yet.

23.01.2022 SUN RA, by Pedro Bell/ Seitu Hayden/ Tym Stevens. A threeway relay: Pedro Bell concieved and sketched the layout, Seitu Hayden drew a revised layout, and Tym Stevens did the actual piece in markers.

22.01.2022 Sly and the Family Stone - Before Sly and the Family Stone, very few soul and R&B groups delved into political and social commentary. But this groundbreaking group was notable for something else rarely seen in the 1960s: diversity. The band was comprised of men and women, blacks and whites, making it one of the most prominent fully integrated groups in rocks history. That integration shone through the groups music and message. Its breakthrough success in 1969 with the album... Stand!featuring the title track, as well as Everyday People, Sing a Simple Song, and I Want to Take You Higherbecame the Family Stones first genuine hit, climbing to number 13 and spending more than 100 weeks on the charts. Stand! also marked the emergence of the political bent in Stones songwriting with Dont Call Me Nigger, Whitey. Over time, however, Sly (born Sylvester Stewart) was beginning to unravel behind the scenes. Developing a debilitating addiction to narcotics, Stone soon became notorious for arriving to concerts late and frequently missing shows all together. See more

19.01.2022 The Isley Brothers - Throughout the 1960s, the Isleys were on a variety of labels, including Motowns Tamla subsidiary for which they recorded the melodic soul classic This Old Heart of Mine, written and produced by the famed Motown production team of Holland-Dozier-Holland. In the late 60s, the group added three younger family members: brothers Ernie and Marvin Isley and cousin Chris Jasper. The new arrangement immediately yielded the biggest hit of the groups career, It...s Your Thing, and began a period when they dominated black-music and placed 50 singles on the R&B charts. Between 1969 and 1988, the Isleys turned out hits like Summer Breeze, Love the One Youre With, Fight the Power, The Pride, Take Me to the Next Phase, and I Wanna Be With You. A bit of trivia: A prepsychedelic Jimi Hendrix played guitar for the Isley Brothers in 1964, and his style can be heard in the playing of Ernie Isley. See more

19.01.2022 Putting the needle on some hot Swedish polka funk tonight.

18.01.2022 Pedro Bells work was spacey and sexual, taking Black bizarro utopia to another level. Decades before Afrofuturism turned into a catchphrase for all that is Black and different, Pedro Bell was laying down the tracks for an arty Underground Railroad that would bring the people towards imaginative freedom. For a decade, his work would grace numerous covers, advertising art and massive posters hanging inside record shops across the world. Rolling Stone magazine included Cosmic Slop and Hardcore Jollies in their 1991 feature of Best Album Covers.

17.01.2022 Im a self-taught Pagan, Pedro Bell has said, who tried and completed around 156,000 credit hours at Bradley and Roosevelt universities, with a million credit hours in Weed Science and Decadent Sex (The Joy of Flex) and Last Pocket 8-Ball to balance out the damage of formal education.

16.01.2022 Popcorn is a lot better with some hot butter of course. Particularly if it comes with six awkward penguins.....

16.01.2022 PEDRODELIC, by Tym Stevens. This is an homage to Pedro Bell, the album cover artist for Funkadelic; because it is done in his style, it is often attributed on the internet to him by mistake.

14.01.2022 Pedro Bell referred to his artworks as scartoons. But they were hardly frivolous. The artwork of Pedro Bell was an essential component of the alternately utopian and dystopian world of P-Funk, which placed African-American reality in the context of a science fiction future that was both scary and hopeful. Pedro Bell was a brilliant autodidact who was a key source of George Clintons ideology through his readings of science fiction, media theory and environmentalist tracts, as well as his knowledge of Sun Ras Afrofuturism.

13.01.2022 Parliament - Funkadelic - Conflict between opposing forces of good, the trippy funkateer Starchild, and evil, the uptight Sir Nose DVoid of Funk. The Mothership Connection. The Brides of Funkenstein. Atomic Dog. Driven by singer, songwriter, and producer George Clintons conceptually inventive mind and the bands tight ensemble playing and stretched-out jamming, ParliamentFunkadelic tackled everything from rap and hip-hop to techno and alternative. Over the decades, Clinton... has presided over a musical empire that included Parliament and Funkadelic which are two separate groups and numerous offshoots (the Brides of Funkenstein, Parlet, and others). Between them, Parliament and Funkadelic had a distinct identity and alternated releases into the late 70s, with Clinton dividing his time between them. Parliament was essentially a horn-based soul group; Funkadelic, a guitar-based rock group. Both were built on a foundation of funk led by an entourage that referred to themselves as dealers of funky music, P-Funk, uncut funk, The Bomb. The P-Funk All-Stars still tour today, and Clinton is second only to James Brown as the most heavily sampled artist. See more

13.01.2022 The Four Tops - This quartet from Detroit performed for 40-plus years without a single change in personneland charted hits at every stage of their lengthy career. Although theyre best remembered for the records they made at Motown in the 60s, the Tops also had substantial success at labels like ABC, Casablanca, and Arista in subsequent decades. The Four Tops consisted of lead singer Levi Stubbs, first tenor Abdul Duke Fakir, second tenor Lawrence Payton, and baritone Renaldo Obie Benson. Among the classics recorded by the Four Tops at Motown: Baby I Need Your Loving, I Cant Help Myself, Its the Same Old Song, Reach Out Ill Be There, Standing in the Shadows of Love, Bernadette. Between 1964 and 1988, the Four Tops made Billboards Hot 100 chart 45 times and its R&B chart 52 times.

13.01.2022 The Temptations - The classic lineup was one of the greatest quintets in music history: Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Paul Williams, Eddie Kendricks, and David Ruffin. Their talentshoned by the savvy stewardship of Motown founder Berry Gordy and some of the industrys most prolific writers, producers, and choreographerscombined to create pure magic. The Temptations blended superb music and smooth-stepping, flawless presentations to reach the top of the charts with a timeless style and sound. Tunes like My Girl, Its Growing, Since I Lost My Baby, Get Ready, Aint Too Proud to Beg, Beauty Is Only Skin Deep; I Wish It Would Rain, and so many more all set the standard by which R&B music groups will be forever judged.

11.01.2022 In addition to his album covers, Mr. Bell created artwork like Fyrebyrd Watch Your Rear (1987), marker on board

06.01.2022 Pedro Bells mind-bending album covers for the band Funkadelic gave visual definition to its signature sound in the 1970s and 80s. Mr. Bell created his first cover for Funkadelic, the pioneering band that merged funk and psychedelic rock, in 1973. The album was Cosmic Slop, and it featured a topless woman, space imagery and mutants. Though Funkadelic and its sister act, Parliament, had been around for several years, Mr. Bells artwork and the liner notes he wrote under the name Sir Lleb (Bell spelled backward) helped define Funkadelic and its elaborate mythology.

06.01.2022 The Supremes - The Supremes rose from the poverty of Detroits Brewster housing project to become Motowns most consistent hit-makers and one of the most popular female groups of the 60sand perhaps of all time. They sang in a polished style that bridged the worlds of pop and soul, as they put together an astounding run of number-one hits in the mid-60s. In June 1965, the Supremes set a record for the most consecutive number-one hits by an American group when Back in My Arms... Again rose to the top of the Billboard singles chart. Other hits in that streak: Where Did Our Love Go, Baby Love, Come See About Me, Stop! In the Name of Love. This milestone is all the more impressive because it occurred at the height of the British Invasion, a period when groups from abroad otherwise ruled the charts. The SupremesDiana Ross, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilsondominated the charts with hits like I Hear a Symphony, You Cant Hurry Love, You Keep Me Hangin On, Love Is Here and Now Youre Gone, The Happening, Love Child, and Someday Well Be Together. In the early 80s, the groups rags-to-riches life story was turned into a successful Broadway musical, Dreamgirls. See more

05.01.2022 I think that coming out of the Civil Rights Movement and other socially charged issues around Black struggle in our country, we needed a space for Black joy, says artist/professor John Jennings, illustrator behind the graphic novel adaption of Octavia E. Butlers classic Kindred. Not to say that Funkadelic wasnt dealing with political issues. George Clinton and his crew had a lot subversive messages in their music. But, a great deal of what P-Funk was about was the power of Black celebration and Black joy in spite of being in an oppressive mode of existence. I think Pedro Bells work was a worthy visual index for that expression. He helped formulate the visual language of Funk and the semiotics of a Black future.
