24.01.2022 NAIDOC WEEK - ALWAYS WAS, ALWAYS WILL BE Check on the latest video of members of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community sharing their stories as part of NAIDOC Week.

24.01.2022 IN MEMORY OF CORY JAMES Council has unveiled a new Indigenous work shirt in memory of the late Cory James as well as announcing Malcolm Saunderson as the inaugural recipient of the Cory James Memorial Scholarship. Cory was a member of Council’s road crew who died suddenly in October 2019. A proud Bundjalung/Yaegl man, Cory wanted to create a work shirt with Indigenous designs to recognise Indigenous staff and promote Indigenous culture and heritage within the community. Sadly..., he died before this vision was realised. In honour of his memory, Council has produced a shirt using Cory’s original artwork. This artwork is a replica of designs Cory hand-painted on a surfboard that reflects his ancestral dreaming path. It features three circles representing the three islands where his ancestors are from Ullagundai Island, Cabbage Tree Island and Stradbroke Island as well as his handprint and signature. There are also symbols that represent people gathering around a campfire and the connection between groups in his grandfather’s country here in Lismore. His mother Jenny Smith hand-painted a snake his family’s ancestral totem to complete the design. Council also wanted to recognise Cory's leadership and passion for improving opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by creating the annual Cory James Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship program will provide $5000 annually to an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Council employee who wishes to undertake further study and develop a leadership role within Council and the community. Cory is sadly missed by his family and colleagues here at Lismore City Council. We will wear his memorial work shirt with love and with pride.

23.01.2022 NIMBIN WATER CUT OFF AFTER MAJOR STORM HITS VILLAGE A severe storm at Nimbin overnight has led to a major water main break at the Nimbin reservoir, cutting off the Nimbin town water supply. Nimbin residents on the town water supply are urged to only use water for essential purposes while Lismore City Council works to repair the break. The storm damage has washed away part of the refilling line between the DE Williams dam and the High Street reservoir.... Storm damage in the Nimbin area is significant with major damage to a culvert on Blue Knob Road cutting the road north out of Nimbin. Council crews are now working to repair the water main break at the reservoir and are undertaking urgent repairs on the worst-affected roads such as Blue Knob Road. Council would like residents to report any other major road or storm damage such as trees over the road or places where access has been cut so Council can schedule the most urgent works. Nimbin residents on town water should minimise water consumption and conserve water wherever possible. Council is working to temporarily fix the water main break this morning so there is access to water and more permanent repairs will be undertaken in the coming days. More information will be provided as it becomes available. To report storm damage, please phone Council on 1300 87 83 87. To stay up-to-date with the latest information from all local agencies, visit the Lismore Disaster Dashboard at: disaster.lismore.nsw.gov.au *** EDIT: We have now repaired the Nimbin water main break (temporarily) and the water supply is restored. 22.01.2022 ROADS REOPENED IN LISMORE AFTER FLASH FLOODING Council has reopened all roads in central Lismore which were closed due to yesterday's flash flooding. Heavy downpours caused major flash flooding in Lismore's central basin and along Wyrallah Road, cutting off several roads and causing traffic chaos.... The Browns Creek pumps have been working at capacity and are continuing to pump water out of the Lismore basin. Around 6000 litres of water per second is being pumped out into the Wilsons River. All roads through Lismore and into and out of the Lismore CBD are now open. Please support local businesses this Christmas - it has been a really tough 2020 and buying local is one of the best things you can do to support our community.

22.01.2022 PM DECLARES NORTHERN RIVERS NATURAL DISASTER AREA Prime Minister Scott Morrison and NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian visited Lismore today to view flood damage and declare the Northern Rivers a natural disaster area. Deputy Mayor Neil Marks said it was terrific to see the Australian and NSW Governments take swift action and the declaration opens the way for Lismore City Council to receive significant funding under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).... He said severe weather in recent days has resulted in major damage to Lismore’s road network and city infrastructure that is expected to exceed $15 million. We would like to thank the Prime Minister and Premier for their quick action and I would like to thank our local MPs Kevin Hogan and Janelle Saffin for their assistance in lobbying for this speedy declaration, the Deputy Mayor said. We do not yet know the full cost of this weather event, but we know it will be very significant. It will take time for Council to properly assess the damage and have a clear picture of the total cost, but to know we can access disaster recovery funding is good news for the city. Severe storms, heavy rainfall and flooding since last Friday has wreaked havoc on roads in the Lismore Local Government Area, with culvert washouts, landslips and major damage to both the sealed and gravel road network. Lismore City Council has commenced urgent road repairs and has mobilised all Council crews in a major clean-up and repair effort.

21.01.2022 BROWNS CREEK PUMPS NO MATCH FOR FLASH FLOODING Lismore has experienced significant flash flooding today and Council is urging people to avoid the Lismore CBD and other low-lying areas. Council's Assets Manager Scott Turner explained that the Browns Creek pumps are working as normal but could not keep up with the sheer volume of water that was deposited in today’s deluge.... Lismore’s flood gates and stormwater drains are closed to keep floodwater from the Wilsons River out of the CBD and surrounds, so there is nowhere for further rainfall to go. The Browns Creek pumps can pump around 5mm of water per hour from the CBD back into the Wilsons River. Normally, this helps to keep the Lismore CBD dry while the levee is closed and water is pumped back out into the river system, he explained. Today, we saw Lismore receive more than 46mm of rain in one hour that’s over nine times the volume of water these pumps can handle. Scott, who is also the Lismore Local Emergency Management Officer during natural disasters, said today’s downpour was ‘extraordinary’. The speed at which the Lismore basin filled was very unusual you simply cannot prepare for a deluge like that, he said. Council follows a strict set of guidelines for operation of more than 30 flood gates and eight pumps to mitigate flood impacts. Our system has been implemented as normal and the Browns Creek pumps are currently working at capacity to pump water out of the basin. Scott said further heavy rain and flash flooding was possible in Lismore and people should exercise caution until the current weather system has eased. He advised people to stay at home if possible or avoid driving when there is heavy rain. He said with a saturated catchment, it could take some time for the localised flooding in the basin to drain. The downpour happened so quickly today and people were all trying to get home or to where they were going, which is understandable, but caused some significant traffic issues, Scott said. In major downpours it is best if you can avoid being on the road altogether and wait it out before driving. It’s also really important that we remain patient with one another. No-one is at fault here this is an act of nature and the reality of living in a flood city. The best we can do is stay calm and exercise caution so that we all get through these events safely. And we should all heed the SES advice to never drive, ride or walk through floodwater.

14.01.2022 MERRY CHRISTMAS LISMORE The tradition of our staff gift of a recycled Christmas Tree to the Lismore community continues, with this year’s tree lifted into place in the early hours of this morning. This year’s tree gives a nod to our rural community who had to contend with bushfires, drought, floods and COVID-19 over the past 12 months.... Standing about 7 metres tall on the Magellan and Keen streets roundabout, the tree is made from recycled 25-litre drums which are used by many people on the land. The bows and Christmas bonbons are all made from chaff and feed bags another nod to our rural community, as are the whirlybirds. The colourful candy canes are made from recycled PVC pipes, with a touch of paint. The heart has become a symbol associated with Lismore and we expanded on this theme, providing staff with more than 40 heart frames (from left over metal) and solid hearts (from a previous year’s projects) to decorate with recycled materials. Council staff are proud to be part of the Lismore community and we wanted to give back and help make our city an even better place to live, work and raise a family. We hope that it can spread some joy, kindness and love at this time of year. Merry Christmas Lismore!

10.01.2022 HOW DO THE BROWNS CREEK FLOOD PUMPS WORK? This diagram shows the difference in water levels from the height in the Wilsons River to the water level inside the levee wall and how our Browns Creek pumps are turning off and on to keep funnelling water from the CBD out to the river. The pumps turn on when the water reaches a certain height and turn off again once they have pumped enough water back out into the river and the water level falls again. This process continues throughout a flood and works effectively to keep the CBD dry in minor and moderate floods. Sometimes when we get really heavy downpours, the pumps can’t always keep up and we see temporary flooding inside the levee around the Dawson/Uralba Street intersection. Interesting stuff, right?!

10.01.2022 THANK YOU NIMBIN POOL VOLUNTEERS! What a great morning training our Nimbin Pool COVID-19 safety volunteers. Nimbin, you are so extraordinary with your generosity, enthusiasm and spirit.
