22.01.2022 Debunking dyslexia myths! There's a number of common misconceptions regarding Dyslexia, here is a list of them. 1. Dyslexia is a vision problem - Primary dyslexia and learning disabilities are complex neurocognitive conditions and are not caused by vision problems. There is no evidence to suggest that eye exercises, behavioural vision therapy, or special tinted filters or lenses improve the long-term educational performance of people affected by dyslexia or other learning d...isabilities, said RANZCO President A/Prof Mark. 2. Children will outgrow Dyslexia - children will still encounter challenges throughout their life, good quality intervention can help them over come their struggles. 3. Dyslexia impacts more boys than girls - dyslexia impacts both equally, girls can be more proficient at masking their signs. 4. No Students with Dyslexia in my class - Dyslexia leads to struggles with around 1 in 5 people. 5. Dyslexia is a sign of low IQ - not at all. Dyslexia impacts a wide range of people with varying cognitive abilities.

They are FREE to download. How to use these FREE resources? 1. Display in your classroom so that kids can see how a sound can be spelled in different ways. 2. Ask the kids to make up their own sentences and illustrate their sentences. 3. Give your students a black and white version so that they need to find the spellings themselves. 4. Make a chart with the different spellings and collect words with the different spellings. Highlight the spellings within each word. 5. Have a class competition in groups: which group can make the silliest sentence using each spelling. Vote on it in class! 11.01.2022 Research consistently finds that poor phonological awareness skills are one of the main causes of poor reading. Phonological awareness difficulties are genetic in their origin. The good news is, with lots of opportunities to improve phonological awareness, the skills of the student can improve considerably. 08.01.2022 MSL is the Australian adapted version of the Orton Gillingham approach. Multisensory teaching is one important aspect of instruction for dyslexic students that is used by clinically trained teachers. Effective instruction for students with dyslexia is also explicit, direct, cumulative, intensive, and focused on the structure of language. Multisensory learning involves the use of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic-tactile pathways simultaneously to enhance memory and learning of written language. Links are consistently made between the visual (language we see), auditory (language we hear), and kinesthetic-tactile (language symbols we feel) pathways in learning to read and spell. 05.01.2022 The MA Rooney Foundation outlines, the Orton Gillingham Approach always focuses on the individual students learning needs. Students with dyslexia need to master the same basic knowledge and it’s relationship to the writing system. However, because of their dyslexia, they need more help than most people in sorting, recognising, and organising the raw materials of language for thinking and use. Language elements must be taught directly and systematically.

05.01.2022 3-cueing vs decoding As teachers we want to help our students succeed. We instinctively offer them different routes and tools to learning. After all, children... are different so why shouldn't we offer them different routes to reading? What is the 3-cueing method? This method teaches the child to look for different cues on the page to figure out what a word could be. They are asked to search the picture, try the context and possibly the first letter of the word. 3-cueing is a guessing game. Did you know that when we teach kids to use different cues to read a word we are actually teaching the methods that poor readers use? Why is this? Good readers are efficient decoders. They focus on the print and translate the symbols on the page to sounds and words. They learn to do this rapidly and this develops into automatic word recognition. This allows the reader to focus on the meaning of the text. Poor readers scoot around the page trying to guess from picture, context and possibly a bit of phonics what the word might be. It is 'rug', 'mat', or 'carpet'? This is inefficient, inaccurate and leads to reading failure. If we don't teach our kids failing strategies in writing, maths, sports or art, why would we teach them to be poor readers? What's more teaching children to decode is consistent with our phonics teaching. As teachers we want our students to succeed and so we need to help them focus on the one successful strategy for reading - decoding. This decodable book is from our Dandelion Readers Level 1 series that introduces vowel digraphs. 03.01.2022 Let's kick off Dyslexia Awareness months by starting to look at what Dyslexia is. In her book Speech to Print, Louisa Moats outlines Dyslexia as A developmental reading disorder whose primary symptoms are poor word recognition and spelling.. The word dyslexia comes from the Greek dys, meaning difficult and lex meaning word. ... Dyslexia is word problems. It originates in the brain and is a continuum, no 2 learners are the same. It impacts all areas that are language based; reading, writing, spelling, speaking. See more
