23.01.2022 Lithgow Sports Medicine is very proud to be sponsoring this years Tour de OROC. The event sees cyclists tackle 1100kms over 6 days to raise funds for Dubbo Macquarie Homestay - accomodation for people from some of our remotest towns when they or their loved ones need medical treatment in Dubbo. Huge respect to the riders taking on this massive challenge for such a great cause.

15.01.2022 I would greatly appreciate your assistance with completing the questionnaire in this link to help me with a project for my Masters in Sports Medicine The questionnaire is about your thoughts on exercise and susceptibility to respiratory infections (colds and flus). I anticipate the questionnaire to take between 5-10 minutes. For many people it will take less than 5 minutes. I would also really appreciate if you could share among your networks - particularly amongst people i...nterested in sport or health. Your help is much appreciated - many thanks. 14.01.2022 A good article explaining glucose, carbohydrate and glycogen and their relevance to endurance sport. While this article is cycling related it applies to ANY endurance sport. I am not a dietitian but I can assist people with the basics of appropriate nutrition strategies for their training needs and have a great network with sports dietitians for those needing more advanced nutrition planning and advice.

14.01.2022 Update for Wednesday October 23rd for Bowenfels Medical Practice Patients.

14.01.2022 Prohibited substances in sport is a hot topic at the moment! Some people are not aware that amateur age group athletes are subject to testing and sanctions if they test positive for a prohibited substance, whether intentionally ingested or not - just like professional athletes. In terms of supplements - my advice is to really seriously consider your need for supplements altogether. If you make the decision that you must take supplements, choose with great care! The suppleme...nt industry is not regulated in the same way as medications and you may well not be ingesting what you think you are... The rules around prescription medications in sport and applications for exemptions for medical use are complex. Professional advice from a sports doctor is highly recommended - make an appointment with me at Lithgow Sports Medicine for help to navigate this challenging area and avoid a suspension from the sport you love because of a lack of understanding of the rules.

14.01.2022 Starting or maintaining significant physical activity as we age can reap huge rewards!

13.01.2022 Love this. Womens sport is finally beginning to get more airtime and exposure. About time.

11.01.2022 Taking a few days away from my practice to learn and update. Looking forward to sharing the wisdom and learning from this excellent conference with patients new and old at Lithgow Sports Medicine into 2020.

11.01.2022 Fantastic to have a local collection point for this. Thanks to The Lolly Bug at Hartley for organising this.

11.01.2022 A different type of trail for me this weekend . This cool little local art event is happening this weekend. Ill be out and about checking out some of the artistic talent in our region - see you out there!

10.01.2022 This looks like a fantastic local running/walking event in Portland.

10.01.2022 Please share this post! Bowenfels Medical Practice will remain closed all day today Tuesday October 22nd. Please do not go to Bowenfels Medical Practice today ...as there will be no clinical staff on site and no administrative services available. 09.01.2022 Getting my #doctordash sweat on! Great initiative by ACSEP Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians to raise awareness of the high rates of mental health distress and suicide in my profession. #drs4drs #crazysocksfordocs #doctorsneeddoctorstoo #exercisemedicine #exerciseasmedicine #sportsdoctor

08.01.2022 Gyms and indoor pools are re-opening with covid-safer restrictions in place - woohoo! It’s been 11 weeks since gyms and pools were open. In training terms that’s a long time - so make sure you take it easy as you head back to training. Even if you have continued to train at home it is usually quite different - so almost everyone will need some reduction in training load and frequency (compared to pre-covid) as you head back to the gym or pool after this long absence.... Overdoing it will increase your chance of significant injury - how annoying would that be?! So, pull back, be patient and you will be back to your pre-covid fitness in no time . Make an appointment with me at Lithgow Sports Medicine on 63522533 for advice on how to safely get back into training or if you have a niggle that should be looked at before you get into it.

07.01.2022 Lithgow Sports Medicine will be closed to new patients until October 29th due to an unlucky sports injury of my own :-) Please contact the Bowenfels Medical Practice on 63522533 for appointments from October 29th onwards.

06.01.2022 A lovely article about the importance of exercise. Exercise cant replace all medication but it can be a useful part of managing many medical conditions. We are very lucky in Lithgow to have our own Parkrun - despite its name walkers are always very welcome - its a great way to get more active and to meet new people. Parkrun is also always completely free! Come along on Saturday mornings at 0800 - check out the Lithgow parkrun Facebook page for more details.... If you need some advice on how to safely get started with being more physically active come along and see Lithgow Sports Medicine - Im just as interested in assisting beginners as elite athletes! Appointments can be made via the Bowenfels Medical Practice on 6352 2533.

04.01.2022 Ok Im biased - riding and racing my mountain bike is my favourite way to be physically active . However, its true - mountain biking is a sport thats so good for us in so many ways. For anyone local thinking about giving mountain biking a try we have a fabulous, small, ridiculously friendly and welcoming local mountain bike club - Central Tablelands Mountain Bike Club. New members are always welcome. I would particularly love to see more local women riding bikes.

04.01.2022 So good to see mental health in athletes receiving significant attention in the most recent IOC consensus statement. Sports and exercise medicine is about so much more than sports injuries. #endthestigma

04.01.2022 Its no secret that I am on a mission to get more women active. Its also no secret that I love mountain biking. So what better than to combine the two with a womens only mountain bike event close to home! Yes it has a race tag but please please dont let that put you off if youre a beginner. This was such a fantastic event last year - incredibly encouraging, nurturing and supportive. It is extremely well organised by some fabulous female members of the Orange Mountain... Bike Club who really get what makes an event work for women. There are options to suit beginners doing their first ever race all the way through to expert riders so if youre a gun MTBer dont be put off either - there will be plenty of fast women to test yourself against too!

03.01.2022 Many of us spend too much time sitting each day. This article has some good suggestions as to how to reduce the problematic effects from too much sitting.

03.01.2022 If you watched the football World Cup final this morning between the USA and the Netherlands did you see the nasty collision of heads between Kelley OHara and Lieke Martens just before half time? And then, did you notice the referee INSISTING that both players leave the field for formal medical assessment despite significant protestation by one of the players? I did. And I was DELIGHTED. Sport related concussion and the importance of proper assessment of sporting head inju...ries to check for concussion is finally being taken more seriously and its a good thing! If you suffer a head injury or a concussion there are now clear guidelines about assessment, management and return to sport. Dont wing it - make sure you seek advice from a doctor with experience in concussion assessment and knowledge of these guidelines before you return to play.

01.01.2022 Tomorrow is the perfect day to try Lithgow Parkrun! Dont forget that despite the name walkers are equally welcome at parkrun and if you feel that 5km is too long for you at the moment then there is also the option to do a single 2.5km lap until you feel able to tackle the full distance.

01.01.2022 Ill be out and about for the #doctordash today.
