23.01.2022 Wise words..... Whenever you return a borrowed pie pan, make sure it's got a warm pie in it. Invite lots of folks to supper. You can always add more water to th...e soup. There's no such thing as woman's work on a farm. There's just work. Make home a happy place for the children. Everybody returns to their happy place. Always keep a small light on in the kitchen window at night. If your man gets his truck stuck in the field, don't go in after him. Throw him a rope and pull him out with the tractor. Keep the kerosene lamp away from the the milk cow's leg. It's a whole lot easier to get breakfast from a chicken than a pig. Always pat the chickens when you take their eggs. It's easy to clean an empty house, but hard to live in one. All children spill milk. Learn to smile and wipe it up. Homemade's always better'n store bought. A tongue's like a knife. The sharper it is the deeper it cuts. A good neighbor always knows when to visit and when to leave. A city dog wants to run out the door, but a country dog stays on the porch 'cause he's not fenced-in. Always light birthday candles from the middle outward. Nothin' gets the frustrations out better'n splittn' wood. The longer dress hem, the more trusting the husband. Enjoy doing your children's laundry. Some day they'll be gone. You'll never catch a runnin' chicken but if you throw seed around the back door you'll have a skillet full by supper. Biscuits brown better with a little butter brushed on 'em. Check your shoelaces before runnin' to help somebody. Visit old people who can't get out. Some day you'll be one. The softer you talk, the closer folks'll listen. The colder the outhouse, the warmer the bed. See more

23.01.2022 Marie Lewis of Omeo - does anyone know her?EDIT - see comments below. her father was on the staff of the Maude and Yellow Girl Mine, and she lost a brother during WWII.In 1942, when the Women's Land Army was formed, one of the first five to be trained was Marie Lewis, 18 years, from Glen Valley near Omeo. She was described as having just left school. ...I wonder does anyone know anything about her? It was obviously a very careful selection process - I wonder if she came direct from Omeo?

23.01.2022 Hi all Just going through 1,000’s of images as I’m sending a few files of images to people and came across these images of the one and only Paleface. I have not... shared these before. Most likely because they were taken on the (10-2-19) the day we hiked back country looking for and found Amigo ,A young colt who had gone missing (I hadn’t posted any pics from that day) Sadly we found him dead (with help from Carol Hancock who pointed us in the right direction). He was most likely bitten by a snake as he was way back country and didn’t show any signs of anything suspicious. We took quite a few pics that day both of Amigo where he lay (we picked and placed flowers on him) and Paleface and co. A sad day it was. Here are a few images of the mighty Paleface that I took that day. So very sad that they are all gone now Thanks Michelle xx Amigo’s father was Pocket Rocket but lives with Paleface and his mum. 19.01.2022 In 1923, the Alpine Transport Coy., started operations between Bruthen and Omeo, using Sentinel steam wagons. Drivers of horse-drawn vehicles protested at the i...ntroduction of these steam trucks. Horses were scared to pass or go near the hissing steam machines. The first stream powered truck arrived in Omeo in 1932, carrying 14 containers of kerosene tins. The steam trucks made a difference, but only enjoyed limited success. Improvements in motor-powered trucks meant better reliability and faster transport, and consequently, they began to be the mode of choice, although horse wagons and an occasional bullock wagon still handled most of the heavy cartage for a time. 16.01.2022 Thoughts of today Steve died a billionaire, with a fortune of $7 billion, at the age of 56 from pancreatic cancer, and here are some of his last words: "In oth...er eyes, my life is the essence of success, but aside from work, I have a little joy, and in the end wealth is just a fact of life to which I am accustomed. At this moment, lying on the bed, sick and remembering all my life, I realize that all my recognition and wealth that I have is meaningless in the face of imminent death. You can hire someone to drive a car for you, make money for you but you can not rent someone to carry the disease for you. One can find material things, but there is one thing that can not be found when it is lost life. Treat yourself well, and cherish others. As we get older we are smarter, and we slowly realize that the watch is worth $30 or $300 both of which show the same time. Whether we carry a purse worth $30 or $300 the amount of money in the wallets are the same. Whether we drive a car worth $150,000, or a car worth $30,000 the road and distance are the same, we reach the same destination. If we drink a bottle worth $300 or wine worth $10 the stroller will be the same. If the house we live in is 300 square meters, or 3000 square meters the loneliness is the same. Your true inner happiness does not come from the material things of this world. Whether you’re flying first class, or economy class if the plane crashes, you crash with it. So, I hope you understand that when you have friends or someone to talk to this is true happiness! Five Undeniable Facts- 1. Do not educate your children to be rich. Educate them to be happy. So when they grow up they will know the value of things, not the price. 2. Eat your food as medicine, otherwise you will need to eat your medicine as food. 3. Whoever loves you will never leave you, even if he has 100 reasons to give up. He will always find one reason to hold on. 4. There is a big difference between being human and human being. 5. If you want to go fast go alone! But if you want to go far go together! And in conclusion, The six best doctors in the world. 1. Sunlight 2. Rest 3. Exercise 4. Diet 5. Self-confidence 6. Family/Friends Keep them in all stages of life and enjoy a healthy life.

15.01.2022 Mums, dads, kids, and beginner and experienced riders (and the Omeo community) are starting to count down the days! Yes, construction has started on the Omeo Sk...ills and Pump Track with an expected December completion date. The new track in Livingstone Park will provide a purpose-built track for cyclists, forming part of the user experience of the Omeo MTB Trails project. If you’re not up to speed with the pump track scene, you will be soon. What Omeo will be offering is quite unique, but an experience for all skill levels in the heart of town. By design, a pump track allows riders to move around the tracks using a circuit of rollers, banked turns and other features using momentum great for all ages. We’re even including a standalone beginner track! The specialised team from Common Ground Trails have started work on site in the past week and said the design was super fun to develop in the playful manner of the word ‘Omeo’, to be emphasised with coloured line markings. The recently completed Wangaratta track is the nearest sealed pump track to Omeo. Omeo Region Mystic Park, Bright Love East Gippsland Common Ground Trails

14.01.2022 A day or two back, we saw the Ensay South Hotel in modern form, after being rebuilt in 1939/40. I think it might have been Helen Martin but cannot locate it imm...ediately Here is the Ensay Hotel at Ensay South in 1922. I hope it it the same location. This advertisement comes from a George R Broadbent touring guide, promoting the trip from Bairnsdale to Wangaratta across the Alps, from which I am preparing a more comprehensive note

14.01.2022 Joan Margaret Stuckey nee Stinger. 1926 - 2020. Where do I start with nan. I hated her cooking. She cooked everything in her combustion wood oven using her home... grown veggies and farm raised meat. As a child, I couldn't get my head around that, after all, produce came from a supermarket, right?! She worked from home and my gosh did she work. Raising 5 boys, she also spun her own wool, made her own preserves, her own clothing, toys for the kids and all sorts. Did I mention she also owned and operated her own vetinary clinic? You could say she was one of the most reputable vets in Gippsland. Raised is Ensay and schooled in Bairnsdale, she graduated far from home at the University of Sydney in 1949 with a Batchelor of Veterinary Science. A remarkable woman who has made her mark in history, an inspiration to many, and what I would do for the time to learn EVERYTHING she was so skilled in, and even enjoy a wood fired meal of hers. 12.01.2022 Ok people of Omeo, has anyone seen Kya? She has decided to go walk about. She is very old and has dementia and is deaf and going blind. If you see her or know where she might be please message me. She has on an aqua collar I’d really like to know what’s happened.Thanks.

12.01.2022 Just for variety, a Norwegian this time. James Olaf Holston came to Omeo from Norway when he was in his teens, around the 1880s. He originally shot kangaroos fo...r their skins, then bought some land and livestock and became a successful grazier. He was also a very keen amateur naturalist and AM Pearson says that ‘some of his written articles on the original condition of the virgin bush must be unique’ (‘Echoes from the Mountains’, 1969, p.364). He died in 1959, aged over 90 years, and his death ‘removed from the community one of its most colourful personalities’ (Pearson, p.363). JO Holston was one of the first car owners in Omeo, but always rode a horse it he was in a hurry! He was one of a group of Omeo people who persuaded the Shire to hand over the Shire Hall to local trustees, who would raise the money to extend and improve it. He advanced the money required for the works to proceed and was reimbursed later. Holston served as a Councillor on Omeo Shire from 1928 to 1930. Pearson commented: ‘Cr Holston, a Norwegian, may have been the only alien to have served as a municipal councillor’ (p.261). He retained his Norwegian nationality until a few years before his death. In 1931, a disastrous fire in Day Avenue destroyed the chemist shop, the newsagency and the bakers shop. These businesses were the only ones operating in their respective trades, so the inconvenience to the community was considerable. The building constructed to replace some of those lost is called the Holston Buildings. It was severely damaged in the 1939 fires but the façade survived and a new building was erected behind it. After the editor of the Omeo Standard died in 1939 his estate carried on the paper, but it closed in 1942. Mr Holston bought the business and plant, hoping it could be revived when manpower was available. In 1945, he financed its rebirth, but it was eventually sold to the Bairnsdale Advertiser. Holston also purchased many township properties to avoid them being sold for removal. Pearson gives an amazing list of JO Holston’s bequests for ‘progressive’ works, of which many were allocated in his will: 2,500 for rebuilding the Church of England Sunday School; 1,000 to the Omeo Agricultural Society; 300 each to the Ensay and Swifts Creek Bush Nursing Centres; 1,000 to the Omeo State School for improving the school grounds and equipment; 800 to the Hinnomunjie Recreation Reserve; 2,500 to Omeo Shire for improving the Shire Hall and its seating; 1,500 to improve facilities at No.2 camping reserve (later named the JO Holston camping ground); 2,500 for a community centre; 2,000 to the Omeo Hospital equipment fund and 1,000 to its endowment fund; 2,000 to the Omeo Waterworks Trust; 100 to the Returned Serviceman’s League, Omeo; 2,500 to the Bairnsdale Rotary Club to establish a scholarship for children of the Omeo Shire; 500 to the Omeo Free Library; $250 to Omeo Shire to help finance a history of the Shire; and 600 to the Omeo Baby Health Centre. After all that, the best that Pearson can find to say is: ‘His generous bequests are worthy of a small memorial plaque in the municipal buildings’!
