21.01.2022 So, what is the Fear-Tension-Pain Syndrome?? When fear is present during labour and birth, the physiological process of birth can be interfered with, slowed or even halted- leading to tension and pain, which then results in even more fear thus, creating the whole fear, tension, pain cycle! So, let’s break it down.... Fear of labour can happen for many reasons and is often instilled in our minds long before we head down the journey of pregnancy and childbirth. Reasons may include: * Lack of education/education by the not so correct Dr. Google!! * Consumption of negative birth stories from family, friendsHollywood!! * Lack of confidence in yourself and your body’s abilities And so many more that can induce huge anxiety around labour and birth. Tension: Fear then causes tension- both physically and mentally. This tension exists in the muscles and joints as well as in the part of the brain that reduces stress (our hypothalamus). Throw in contractions and your body naturally tends to tense up- along with your mind!! You might even find that just the thought of labour causes your body to tense up- a very normal reaction for many women. Pain: Is derived from the tension we feel. Tension can create barriers in the natural birth processes including dilation, movement of baby down the birth canal and the actual delivery of your baby- thereby causing pain which will in turn instil more fear. This cycle has the power and the potential to lengthen and even stall your labour as well as be a trigger for a cascade of interventions that may not have been necessary if you had been aware of the effects fear can have on your labour and birth. SO.How do we change this? Educate yourself, Fill yourself with all the knowledge! If you can take part in one of my childbirth education courses- contact me (I offer both online and face-to-face classes)or if you are out of Melbourne and wanting face-to-face classes, find someone local to you who is a trained Hypnobirthing Australia practitioner like myself. Stay active- daily exercise is important, go for a brisk walk or a swim, or join a local prenatal yoga class- @avocadobabyyoga is fantastic if you’re down on the Mornington peninsula. Keep your body mobile and balanced leading up to your beautiful birthing day. It will also help you with the endurance that labour requires. And finally, get yourself a kickass support partner. My positive birth class is just as important for birth partners as it is for Mums. We will teach them all the tools and techniques they need to be able to support you- the strong, powerful birthing goddess that you are with confidence.

21.01.2022 skin-to-skin Whilst It’s been common practice for a while now to place baby skin-to-skin with mum at birth for at least 1-2hrs, studies are now showing that their are so many more benefits to kangaroo care (skin to skin) than we originally thought! It’s been found that benefits of skin-to-skin care during infancy may persist for years. A long-term study of babies who were in the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) of an Israeli medical center after birth found that benefits... persisted years later. After assessing the children at 10 years of age, the researchers found benefits for those who had skin-to-skin care, including better maternal attachment behavior, reduced maternal anxiety, enhanced child cognitive development, and mother-child reciprocity. They found that the 10 leading benefits to skin to skin care are: Improvement in heart and lung function stabilisation of body temperature regulation of blood sugars initiation of breastfeeding transfer of good bacteria reduction in crying relief from pain enhancement of mum-baby communication or dad-baby communication. boost in transition from womb boost in maternal-child bonding It’s also important to remember that if for some reason mum can not do skin-to-skin care with her babe then placing them on their partner’s chest is just as important!!!! . . . @mummyuniverse . . . #hypnobirthing #hypnobirthingaustralia #positivebirth #birth #meditativebirth #birtheducation #pregnant #melbournebirth #melbourne #melbournebirthingclasses #naturalbirthing #pregnancy #expectingmom #birthsupport #newborn #pregnancysupportmelbourne #breastfeeding #antenatalclass #love #midwife #melbournemidwife #midwifecare #birthphotography #birthwithoutfear #newmum #pregnantinmelbourne #calmbirth #hypnobubs #melbournecalmbirth

18.01.2022 Newborn Head Moulding. I’m sure many of you have seen a cone head like this before and wondered how on earth???? Will they be like this forever?? Be Rest assured...no!!! Newborn head moulding is a very safe and temporary abnormal head shape that results from pressure on the baby’s head as they descend into the birth canal during childbirth.... The bones of a newborn’s skull are soft and flexible, with gaps between the plates of bone. These gaps or spaces are called cranial sutures. There are two larger gaps at the front and back of your baby’s head called the anterior and posterior fontanelles...you might be able to feel these soft, cushiony spots as you are holding your newborn. When a baby is born in the head-first position, the pressure placed around and on baby’s head in the birth canal can cause the cranial bones to move and even slide over each other (depending on the amount of pressure and length of time), creating more of an oblong-shaped head!! Once Bub is born, their cranial bones will slowly shift back to their original positions as the pressure and sometimes swelling subsided.. so you can be rest assured that you will not have a cone head forever!! Sometimes baby might even have a build up of fluid on their scalp (capital succedaneum) or a pooling of blood beneath their scalp (cephalhaematoma) which can further distort the appearance and shape of bub’s head. Fluid and blood collection in and around the scalp is common and will often go away within a few days. As your baby grows (along with their brain) their cranial bones will shift accordingly. Eventually the space between the bones (the sutures) will close when bub’s brain has reached full size. . . . from 2lifedoula . . #hypnobirthing #hypnobirthingaustralia #positivebirth #birth #meditativebirth #birtheducation #pregnant #melbournebirth #melbourne #melbournebirthingclasses #naturalbirthing #pregnancy #expectingmom #birthsupport #newborn #pregnancysupportmelbourne #breastfeeding #antenatalclass #love #midwife #melbournemidwife #midwifecare #birthphotography #birthwithoutfear #newmum #pregnantinmelbourne #calmbirth #hypnobubs #melbournecalmbirth

16.01.2022 Whether you are a rodent, gorilla or human... you are designed and equipped with the instinct and ability to give birth. We are literally wiredfrom birth to give birth! So, why are so many women experiencing problems when it comes to birthing? Well - here’s the thing....we have two other parts to our brain and whilst they each have their own functions and responsibilities they all still intermingle and communicate with each other. It’s the activity within our think...ing brain (our neocortex) that can have immense control over our instinctive reptilian brain...inhibiting it’s ability to execute its primal behaviours such as labour and birth. - If we approach birth with fear, the physiology of birth is interrupted by our thinking brain, leading to tension, more pain and as a result even more fear. Thus, it is soo important we rewire our brain around birth, release all of our fears and envision our calm, positive births whilst instilling confidence in ourselves and our body’s natural birthing instincts. In doing this we are helping our bodies to create and release an optimal combination of hormones that will allow us to labour both comfortably and effectively. At Little Bird Flies we teach you how to break this fear-tension-pain cycle...even during lockdown! So If you want to birth without fear send me a DM or click on the link in my profile and get in touch today! . . image unknown?

14.01.2022 Wondering what is attached to this lil bubba’s head? This is a Fetal Scalp Electrode or an FSE! If you are having continuous external monitoring of your baby’s heart rate throughout your labour and they are having a lot of trouble getting a continuous and reliable recording your care provider will often discuss the placement of an FSE.... The FSE is a small wire placed under the skin on your baby’s scalp. This is done via a vaginal examination, Your waters must be broken and your cervix dilated a few centimetres for it to be placed. It can allow you to have a lot more freedom to move as you won’t have someone trying to press the fetal Heart rate monitor against your belly the whole time but it is a more invasive form of monitoring. Like all interventions you must give consent. There is no wrong or right option...it is about being informed, asking questions, knowing your options and making a decision that is Best for YOU! . . . @evarosebirth . . . #birth #birthclasses #melbournebirthclasses #calmbirth #hypnobirthing #hypnobirthingaustralia #melbournehypnobirthing #hypnobirthingswitzerland #cabrini @cabrinihealth #littlebirdflieshypnobirthing #pregnant #pregnantmelbourne #pregnancy #mumtobe #midwife #antenatal #antenatalclasses #labour #breastfeeding #csection #postpartum @frances_perry_house #placenta #birthphotography

14.01.2022 Is your partner prepared for birth? Do they feel confident in their ability to be able to support you? Do they understand how your body works and how labour typically progresses? Do they know your birth preferences? Do they feel that they will be able to advocate for you and ask all the right questions of your caregiver and be able to communicate with them effectively? A birth partner’s preparation for birth is just as important as your preparation. At Little Bird Flies we st...rongly recommend partners attend and take part in our Positive Birth classes with you! The most common words I hear after my positive birth class from partners are I’m so glad we came to your class, I feel so much more confident in my ability to be able to support my wife or partner now...I really had no idea before!! 14.01.2022 Who here gave birth on all 4s?? . Boy oh boy did @mjfbirthphotography capture an incredible image of this lil squish!! . All 4s is a fantastic way to open up the pelvis to allow more room for Bub to navigate their way down the birth canal!!... And despite all the Hollywood movies, this is probably the most common position to birth in!! I know shock horror right? What do you mean we don’t lay flat on our backs with our legs up in the air? I mean yes their can be a time and place for this, absolutely!! But, for the majority of the time most women instinctively turn over on to their hands and knees and bear down with the help of gravity!!! . . We discuss all things labour and birth in my @hypnobirthingaustralia Positive Birth classes including a range of positions that will help you move and groove your Bub down into the birth canal with more ease! I don’t have many spots left for my December class so message me if you’re keen! 14.01.2022 @birthtimeworld NAIDOC week. Always Was Always Will Be. ... With the deepest respect and love and with the family’s blessings, we share these images of @teish_giirl and her family, Birthing on Country....Yuin Country. Words can’t describe the profound honour it was for @midwifejohunter and @jerushasutton to attend as midwife and photographer/videographer, along with beautiful second midwife @louisedavidmidwifelc As so eloquently written in the joint Birthing on Country position statement - Respecting individual choice is central to the BoC model. The identification of ‘risk factors’ is viewed through a cultural lens inclusive of the individual woman’s needs and cultural birthing practices, which enriches and informs their choices, assessment and planned care. YOU DID IT TEISHA, may this just be the beginning. Teisha’s words.... Birthing on Country and what a glorious day it was. BoC is the way our woman have always given birth to her child, on the lands of ancestors, ensuring a spiritual connection to the land for her baby. Yesterday we birthed our baby son Nullah Rungatahi Mulligamiriyara Toi out on country where my songlines sing many songs of the past, present and future, where the fresh water meets the salt water and the mountains meet the ocean. HAPPY NAIDOC WEEK MY PEOPLE MY PEOPLE . In our family we celebrate who we are and where we came from every single second of every day. Thank you to our private midwives who were also part of this amazing experience. #birthingoncountry #yuincountry #yuinbaby #wiradjuribaby #itstime #birthtimeB

10.01.2022 Power and health are linked. You can’t be an empowered patient and get the health outcomes you want with inaccurate information and half-truths. True choice-weighing your own personal risk-benefit ratio and making a decision for your body based on that information-requires facts. - Dr. Jennifer Gunter (women are being told lies about their bodies, The Guardian). So, are you ready to stop feeling overwhelmed by birth? Are you ready to breakdown your fear and start feeling c...onfident and empowered? At Little Bird Flies I teach women that to have that positive birth they need to empower themselves with information (and the right information) so that they can safely advocate for themselves and their baby! I help them to find the facts, understand informed choice and to realise their own true power to ensure that they are at the centre of their own birth experience. 07.01.2022 Let’s talk cesareans!! It gets me all excited when I see photos like this one. A photo of a gentle cesarean where Mum is included in the journey of bringing her baby earth-side! It can take some work- it requires coordinating with your OB, the anaesthetist and theatre nurses as well as the paediatrician but It can be possible! I think a lot of the time women become a little overwhelmed by the whole theatre experience, Dads too!! Seeing how controlled the environment is, many ...women feel that they don’t have any choices and just let it all happen!!! But, Mumma you absolutely do have a voice and a say in what occurs during your cesarean. And you know what???? There are a lot of OBs out there who are keen to help facilitate this, they just need a reminder at the time!!! So remember, You can advocate for a gentle delivery, dropping the drapes to see baby being born, delayed cord clamping and skin to skin straight away and I talk about this in my Positive Birth course. So if you are interested, send me a message or click on the link in my profile!!! @elisejunaphotography . . . #hypnobirthing #hypnobirthingaustralia #positivebirth #birth #meditativebirth #birtheducation #pregnant #melbournebirth #melbourne #melbournebirthingclasses #naturalbirthing #pregnancy #expectingmom #birthsupport #newborn #pregnancysupportmelbourne #breastfeeding #antenatalclass #love #midwife #melbournemidwife @jessiemcphersonprivate @knoxprivatehospital3152 #midwifecare #birthphotography #birthwithoutfear #newmum #pregnantinmelbourne #calmbirth #hypnobubs #melbournecalmbirth @cabrinihealth

02.01.2022 HAPPY NEW YEAR Welcoming 2021 with open arms but also saying goodbye to 2020 with a lot of gratitude, love and appreciation. It was a hard year for everyone more so for some and not so much for others but, it forced us all to slow down, reach out for help and accept help. It truly taught us to appreciate what we have, to give and to serve others and to appreciate the little things in life.... 2020 taught us to love and to love hard because no day here on this beautiful earth is ever certain and it is this lesson that I will never lose sight of ever again. I have so much gratitude for 2020 but am also soo aware of how fortunate I am to be living in a country where we have access to running water, I have not just a roof over my head but a loving home to live in, access to free healthcare and a government that has done A-ok muddling their way through this Pandemic. I don’t ever want to forget 2020, I want to bring the lessons we learnt from this challenging and yet beautiful year and bring them into 2021. I can’t wait for another year of empowering women, teaching women to trust their bodies, to love their bodies and to dream their positive birth into reality! 2021 Mummas and birth partners-to be you’ve got this pandemic or not!!! . . . @laurensmithson . . . #2021 #birth #birthclasses #melbournebirthclasses #calmbirth #hypnobirthing #hypnobirthingaustralia #melbournehypnobirthing #hypnobirthingswitzerland #cabrini @cabrinihealth #littlebirdflieshypnobirthing #pregnant #pregnantmelbourne #pregnancy #mumtobe #midwife #antenatal #antenatalclasses #labour #breastfeeding #csection #postpartum #empoweredbirth #onlinebirthclasses #pregnancy

01.01.2022 So you’re home with baby and have absolutely no clue what to do about that umbilical cord? The umbilical cord will initially be moist and blue/grey/cream in colour. It will be clamped and cut at birth leaving behind a stub (as you can see above). It will begin to dry out with each passing day and it’s colour will continue to darken and black a little. After a week or two it will completely dry out and appear all shrivelled before falling off. So, how do I take care of it i...n the meantime? Keep it clean and dry as much as possible. After bath time you might like to use a cotton ball to dry right around it and close to the belly button. keep the cord outside of the nappy to stop it from getting warm and moist...you might need to fold the nappy over to do this. NEVER try to pull or remove the stub yourself just let it take its natural course. Whilst the stump is drying out you might see some oozing around baby’s belly button. It might be clear, sticky or brownish and can have a little odour to it. This is very normal and part of the healing process. You can just give the belly button a wash with some warm water and pat it dry. if it starts to look red and infected or your baby has a fever you need to contact your GP or MCHN. When the stub eventually falls off you might find that there are still some umbilical cord remains in the belly button...this is very normal you do not need to do anything just continue to wash with warm water and keep it nice and dry. It will eventually disappear. Once the stump has fallen off, some babies can develop an umbilical granuloma. This looks like a small pink or red lump in the belly button area. Sometimes the lump might also ooze. Give your GP a call to get them to check it out but usually it will just get better on its own. Just keep the belly button area nice and clean and dry. It is quite rare but sometimes a bulge or lump will form near your baby’s belly button. This could be an umbilical hernia. It’s often more noticeable when your baby cries or strains to poo. In any case, if you do notice this- contact your GP. . . . 2: @kinshipbyk

01.01.2022 The Bum Down Bubba! Most babies will settle into a head-down position by about the last month of pregnancy. However, roughly 3 in every 100 babies are still in a bum down (breech position) as they reach their estimated due date. If your baby is in a breech position at 36 weeks, your doctor or midwife will probably suggest you think about an ECV- an external cephalic version after 37 weeks. An ECV involves externally rotating baby into a head down position whilst being sa...fely monitored! However and ECV is not suitable for everyone! If you don’t have an ECV, or if you have it but it doesn’t work, then your options are to have an elective cesarean birth or to have a vaginal birth. These days, breech births are placed under a high risk category and women are quite often encouraged to take the elective caesarean route by their care provider! HOWEVER, it is important to know that a breech vaginal birth can still be possible, depending on your individual circumstances, the type of breech position your baby is in, and the skills of the doctors and midwives available to you. If your local service can’t offer these services, you can ask to be referred to another health service that can provide these options for you (Australian government:pregnancybirthbaby.org). . Don’t be afraid to ask questions Mumma! If your Bub is still chillin-out inside bum down and you want a vaginal birth and you’ve done all your research, asked all the right questions and fully aware and understanding of your own bub’s breech situation...it is your right to move along to a healthcare provider who will safely guide you to your wants and needs. That said...it is perfectly ok for you to say yes to a c-sec too just like this amazing mumma! It’s what’s right for you and you only!!! . . If you want to know more about your birthing options and how to have a positive and empowering birth experience!! Send me a message or click on my website link in my profile!!! I’d love to have a chat with you! I’m running my final Positive Birth class for the year on the 5th and 12th of December AND...it’s in person!!!!!! Yay!!! . . stylish_bump . . See more
