25.01.2022 WHICH BOOKS ARE BEST? Exploring 3 questions about which books are best for language learning - link in bio. P.S. You can listen to the audio blog if you don't have time to read

24.01.2022 Recently, I heard this ‘portmanteau’ used by a favourite family of mine! It so aptly describes the fine line we walk between a discussion and an argument. portmanteau (n): a word blending the sounds and combining the meanings of two words eg., brunch (breakfast + lunch = brunch eg., hangry (angry + hungry) ... At Little Birdie Books, we love all things language! Tell us your favourite portmanteau below (we’d love to hear it) See more

19.01.2022 I loved this chapter on the brain and memories from the brilliant book ‘The Whole Brain Child’ by Daniel J Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson. It’s always fascinated me how a smell or a song will take you straight back to a different time and place. Our memories are not stored in a filing cabinet nor are they easily retrieved. This is because clusters of neurons are fired when we ‘remember’ not specific ones. In fact it is more apt to RECOLLECT rather than RECALL memories. O...ver time, memories are shaped by the stories we tell ourselves and others tell us. This is especially important when we are dealing with fear or anxiety. Our job as parents is to help our children retell the story so their negative memories don’t stop them from trying something new or different in the future. Or in #threelittlewords to help our children ‘kill the butterflies’ - the figurative ones in their tummies of course! See more

06.01.2022 If you don’t know these two types of time, then please do yourself a favour and read on. Chronos time is the hard, slow-passing time we parents often live in (minute to minute, hour to hour) and yes this does include Christmas time. For example, waiting in line at the Target checkout with a sulking preschooler and a terrible two year old grabbing anything within reach. Parenting at any time of the year is a job and any job worth doing is never easy. So it is simpl...y not possible to ‘carpe diem’ or ‘seize the day’ when it comes to parenting EVEN in the festive season. As parents, we experience guilt about not enjoying our days with our kids plus our guilt is doubled at Christmas because ‘tis the season. So that’s where Kairos time comes in. Kairos is time outside of time. Kairos is those magical moments when time stands still. We have a couple of these moments a day and they are golden! So tonight and this festive season, say goodbye to the clock and hello to the moments! If you feel like sharing, tell us your Kairos moment today See more

04.01.2022 King Theodore is thrust into ruling the animal kingdom and he quickly learns that his indecision leads to atrophy! What happens when Theodore can't decide whether to cut his mane?!? Why kids love it Kids will relate to Theodore's indecisiveness of what breakfast to eat or which socks to wear. Beautifully illustrated and cleverly written, the book has great rhythm and is really fun to read aloud! ... Why parents love it A fun way to introduce kids to the concept of voting! A story about problem solving, leadership and believing in yourself. Plus, there are many tongue-in-cheek comments to keep parents chuckling! Why speech pathologists love it The clear story structure makes it easy for kids to explore the characters, the setting, the problem, the actions and the resolution. Pip Smith's words and Beau Wylie's illustrations work together beautifully to express the magnitude of Theodore's dilemma. The descriptive language is powerful, with lots of Tier 2 vocabulary including puzzled, baffled, natural, options, sweltering. There are also many opportunities to explore different types of print including book titles, charts, graphs and ballot papers! There are so many aspects to explore - perfect to be enjoyed over and over again! @ Brisbane, Queensland, Australia See more

04.01.2022 Hey Brisbane, how are you feeling about this 3 day lockdown? We're going to need that sneaky 5 minutes away from the kids to have our coffee in peace more than ever this week and this activity in our March membership will give you just that! Your kids will love creating theirnown version of the Freddie story, using either the rhyming words we've provided or coming up with their own! The repetitive nature of the sentences will help them to 'read' the story themselves and is fantastic for supporting sentence structure and story retelling skills. It's the last few days to join us in March to receive your FREE Aussie Easter book - don't miss out!

01.01.2022 There is no doubt that television most definitely has a place in MY world of parenting. In fact, I really don’t know how my grandparents survived their parenting years without it. It can’t be all bad right?! I’m sure my child learns most of her aquatic knowledge from Octonauts and re-enacts many of the imaginative games from Bluey. But here’s the catch.... tv is passive. All input. No output. Book reading on the other hand is like a conversation; a two way street. ...It is a shared, interactive experience which allows for your child to take a turn thus deepening their language comprehension AND expression. Still not convinced? Picture books contain 50% more rare words than primetime television and we know that vocabulary is the strongest predictor of long term reading success. So #5booksaday is the challenge @littlebirdiebooks this week. Who’s in?! Oh and before you ask, yes my kids will be having a TV dinner tonight. Everything in moderation right?! See more
