03.01.2022 LT MALOP ST (West End) 24/7 ALFRESCO DINING: I apologise upfront this post is rather long. However, recently there has been several media articles regarding veh...icle access to Lt Malop St, which has caused confusion in the community. I would like to provide some clarification. Currently the west end of Lt Malop St between Shorts Place and James St allows for vehicle access anytime. A report has come to Council for consideration, which suggests allowing vehicle access between 4:00am and 4:00pm on any given day and vehicle restrictions at all other times. The traders, hospitality operators and venue owners in the area have advised me strongly that this is still NOT GOOD ENOUGH and that by and large, their preference would be the Total Closure (permanent ban) to all vehicles 24/7 from Dennys Lane to Shorts Place, and to allow access to Shorts Place via Moorabool St. This is one of the ONLY ways that we can finally put a stop to through traffic in this section of Lt Malop St and build in the safety to have 24/7 ALFRESCO DINING. If implemented, the section of Lt Malop St you see in the attached photos, would be permanently vehicle free and only open for pedestrians, cyclists, etc. Such an arrangement would ensure Geelong finally got its FIRST 24/7 ALFRESCO DINING and community gathering space. It would also provide significant more options for potential investors, developers and business operators (bars, restaurants, function centres, etc) for the Moorabool St strip between Lt Malop St and Ryrie St (west end). In a previous motion I requested the Council CEO to explore this option. Not because we want traffic access to Lt Malop St, but the contrary, to permanently ban all vehicles 24/7 from Dennys Lane to Shorts Place and have this as a people space ONLY. I know this is somewhat confusing, however, I will try and clear it up further later in the week with a video, and I’m happy to take calls on this for anyone that may have questions: 0492 366 320. I also encourage you to speak to the business operators in Lt Malop Street to hear this from them direct. Please also see comments from the Council website, which I have previously made publicly regarding this matter. Thank You. #firstgeelong24/7alfrescodining #supportliveentertainment #supportsmallbusiness #supporthospitality
