25.01.2022 Exec Summary: ignore the warnings, do something unwise and you might be setting yourself up. Hardly a hack. Unfortunately lots of criminals make a living because of this kind of thing. Not much different to leaving the keys under a flowerpot.

24.01.2022 A thoughtful and factually accurate article which isnt trying to sell you something. A rarity thats worth a read.

24.01.2022 While this review focuses on the VeraSecure, 95% of it holds true for the Vera models currently available in Australia.

24.01.2022 Google is intensifying its push into our lives via the Smart Home. Im 100% on board with getting rid of hundreds of app+device solutions. But Im still cautious about how Google will use and monetise the data it collects - yes it will enable features to work but Googles business model is making money from your data. Its creepy enough how much information Google (and Facebook etc) has on us, without them having access to what we do offline as we walk around our homes.

24.01.2022 Just because its cool. Although I wonder if the boat loving, recreational fisherman combined with smart home owners can turn this into the must have gadget. Niche market for sure. But Id have one.

24.01.2022 For the Vera owners - new firmware coming which has some important changes to the Z-wave firmware and new security features which may break some plugins. For once, its worth reading the release notes before upgrading. If you rely on third party plugins I recommend holding off on this update until the dust settles and youve got confirmation they will still work.

23.01.2022 Ok Google, open the pod bay doors.

21.01.2022 A good article on our objective of making the smart home something that thinks for itself instead of just reacting to commands. A lot of this you can achieve now with some clever scene scripting, but hopefully one day there will be a way to have your home learn independently - that will probably be cloud based, so privacy and data tracking could be an issue.

20.01.2022 The final blog on my Reticulation Controller and Pool Manager project looks at the plumbing, benefits and potential future projects to fully automate almost every aspect of pool operation - including calling the Pool Guy.

20.01.2022 Im sure the line they shouldnt have crossed was way, way behind where they went. Not only is this deeply concerning from a privacy point of view - the rationale for not encrypting video is so they can pursue monetisation. How exactly are they planning to make money from video taken inside your home or at your front door? I get the convenience of devices like Ring - I wonder how far well let these companies go before we demand greater protection or return to solutions where we keep our data inside our homes or at least under our control.

19.01.2022 This ones more for the kitchen gadget lovers rather than home automation buffs. But if youre looking for a bin you can talk to or a cutting board that has a smartphone app, then weve got you covered.

18.01.2022 Interesting application, but I like the basic premise. Do the right thing and you get a smooth ride. Break the limit and you lose your muffler.

17.01.2022 This is somewhat amusing. Microsoft partially nailed it in 1999. But lets be honest, if my Missus wants me to pick up garlic from the supermarket, she doesnt care where my car is.

16.01.2022 A thoughtful and factually accurate article which isn’t trying to sell you something. A rarity that’s worth a read.

15.01.2022 Securing the smart home is mostly basic computer security as this case study demonstrates. Passwords: complexity, defaults and reuse. Be savvy about clicking links in email.

14.01.2022 In our latest customer project, we built some custom Ultrasonic Sensors for monitoring Rainwater Tank levels on a Vera home automation controller.

14.01.2022 The logical next step for this project: Alexa, bring me a beer.

14.01.2022 Veras Official Alexa skill finally available for Australian Region.

12.01.2022 Looking for a project to get your kids off the iPad and to learn a bit about Microcontrollers while youre at it? Turn that cheap train set into something smart.

12.01.2022 Just like you shouldnt buy puppies and kittens as Christmas presents, perhaps that cheap smart speaker deserves similar forethought.

12.01.2022 Sounds good in theory, but I wouldnt want to be shouting my Door Lock PIN codes across the house.

11.01.2022 The Cranky Automation Guy is back again. This time with some advice for those building a new home.

10.01.2022 I’m sure the line they shouldn’t have crossed was way, way behind where they went. Not only is this deeply concerning from a privacy point of view - the rationale for not encrypting video is so they can pursue monetisation. How exactly are they planning to make money from video taken inside your home or at your front door? 09.01.2022 For those of you who were interested in our Reticulation/Pool Control project but wanted something more "off the shelf". We have the new OpenSprinker 3.0 Rev1s in stock.

06.01.2022 This is the Homekit version, but the Z-wave model can be used in the same ways. I like this video because it covers why we still need physical buttons in a smart home. From my experience, nothing gets Wife Acceptance Factor by ensuring things can still be done by simply pressing a button.

06.01.2022 I dont think we saw these in Australia, but they are a good example of what happens when a company with a cool new gadget that depends on cloud services goes out of business. Core, essential functions should run inside your home - leave the fluffy stuff to the cloud.

05.01.2022 My motto has always been If its worth doing, its worth overdoing. Therefore I love this over the top technology sledgehammer to solving a flaw with a very simple device. But hey - Indoor sundial!

04.01.2022 Sure. Why not. People spend a lot of money on their Furkids. There are some interesting ideas here, hopefully interoperability gets added to the list.

03.01.2022 This is a great introduction to using Arduino and Cloud services to create your own voice controlled automation switches for very little cost. The video is well produced and worth watching even though English is not the presenters first language.

03.01.2022 In this blog I cover off how to get Vera to log system performance data so that it can be graphed and monitored alongside other devices on your home network. This ones more for the tech savvy home automation system, but it forms the basis of a new platform Im building to centralise all of my IT, Security, Environmental and Energy data.

02.01.2022 Good introduction to Z-wave for those new to the technology.

02.01.2022 In this episode of Crankys automation blog - Part rant, part lesson on Geofencing and Presence detection.

01.01.2022 A glimpse into the future of sensors everywhere based on the new Z-wave 700 chips. 10 years battery life on a coin cell.

01.01.2022 I generally recommend having local security video storage so you can store high quality recordings for longer periods. But if you value your privacy, this story might make the decision easier.
