24.01.2022 On the 9th day of the 9th month we recognise the importance of being alcohol free for the 9 months of a pregnancy. Today is International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder awareness day, a day to raise awareness, provide support and to wear red shoes all day!
24.01.2022 Our OTs at Lively Eaters love sensory play as much as the next therapist (maybe even more so!) which is why we recommended it so highly to parents. How it relates to food? Children with sensory sensitivities find it challenges to touch certain food textures with their hands, therefore will often avoid eating these textures (even with cutlery). Engaging children in messy play activities not only gives them opportunity to explore new textures to desensitise, it also means they can learn about the new texture without anyone asking them to eat it! Give it a go at home! Or come into clinic to give it a go where we dont mind the mess! http://www.earlyyearsresources.co.uk//edible-sensory-play/

18.01.2022 Let them play! With food!
18.01.2022 Lively Eaters has been supporting families Australia wide for the last 10 years to teach their tube fed children to enjoy the delights of food and drinks - either orally or via tube when supplementation is required. We have successful provided intensive feeding therapy for tube weaning through Memorial Hospital however the event of COVID has allowed our dreams to become a reality. Since March this year we have provided home based intensive feeding support via our Virtual Ho...me based weaning program to teach children to eat and drink. In the last 4 months, 5 families have been supported this way which has allowed them to stay in their home environment but still have Paediatrician, mealtime and mental health support for the 6 day program. Our experienced Intensive program team of Dr Dildeepa Naveen, Emily Lively, Georgina Holloway, Lynly Mader, Skye Shute, Jess Smith, Rebecca Barnard, Skye Shute, Alice Bradley and Rachel George are delighting in coaching parents through the strategies and challenges that evolve as children learn new skills and parents learn the new normal. Although Lively Eaters has been working via telehealth with families Australia wide and Internationally for the last 10 years, this innovative way of providing home based tube weaning allows families whom otherwise arent able to come to Adelaide to still access world class therapy programs. If you were always worried about the barrier of getting to Adelaide, please give Amalie a call to discuss your specific circumstances. And yes.....for local families and those whom have unrestricted access through the SA border - we would love to see you in person to kick start your childs journey of food discovery!
18.01.2022 How have you been managing with limited brands available and the supermarket shelves bare of the only option your child will eat...... 17.01.2022 Do you know of a child aged 6-12 with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy or Down Syndrome who might like to be involved in this Flinders University research? It includes free online assessment and literacy intervention, and activities for parents/guardians.
16.01.2022 "Develop a passion for learning, if you do, you will never cease to grow" We all have so much to learn from each other and last week we got to learn from our bundle of knowledge Speech Pathologist Skye who recently completed an AEIOU training course. This was a great time to reflect and take in a new framework, but also to appreciate how much we knew! Thanks for sharing your learnings with us!
16.01.2022 The excitment of learning to manage the same food but in different colours/presenation can be a big step for lots of our children with limited diets. This young man smashed his goal in the Lively Eaters kitchen - creating a multi-coloured cake which he learnt tasted the same, no matter what colour it was! VEry important step for children to learn - safe food can LOOK different but still be the SAME.
16.01.2022 Fantastic share from a Lively Eaters family of how they have implemented divided plates into their mealtimes! These plates can be a great way of separating foods for eaters who struggle with foods touching. They also allow for new foods to be presented with 'safe' foods without any risk of 'contamination'. We stock a range in our clinic or there are many options out there on the market for you to choose from.
15.01.2022 Are you feeling like these days of being at home are blending into one?! Mel shares some tips on how to stay Mentally Well during these times of change:

14.01.2022 One of our energetic Dietitians Alice shares her joy of cooking with children and what she has learnt working directly with them in the kitchen. Follow her thoughts on the link below and check her out in clinic, usually cooking up a storm
14.01.2022 Does this sound familiar to you....at every meal.... with every food you offer? It can be exhausting to hear this over and over again, just thinking to yourself if only you tried it, you might actually like it! Children can be great at saying no, so much so that it almost becomes automatic when new foods are presented to them. There are many components that lead to children refuse to try new foods, a lot of them are explored in therapy with one of our qualified feeding therapists. We currently offer therapy as face to face, telehealth and within SA COVID restrictions we are back with exciting new groups.
14.01.2022 We love learning! Thanks to Valerie from Let's Eat! and Debbie from Feeding Kids Sydney for sharing you knowledge and latest research with us. We are excited to put our new skills into practice!
13.01.2022 From October 1st 2019 the NDIA announced that Dietetics services will be funded through NDIS plans. How can a Lively Eaters Dietitian assist your child? If they are tube fed we can: - Provide regular nutrition and growth support ... - Organise scripts for formula requirements and nutritional supplements - Support the transition from formula to home made blended diet with recipes, step-by-step guidance and ongoing monitoring support - Be an active part of the Lively Eaters enteral tube weaning program For Challenging / Restricted Eaters: - Diet analysis to identify any nutritional deficits - Provide valuable input to our Lively Eaters Feeding Therapists around food goals/targets/therapy planning - Reassurance that despite a limited diet - perhaps your childs nutrition is actually OK! For children with Allergies who have become scared of food: - Provide advice around safe foods and when/how to reintroduce allergenic foods if appropriate - Match you up with one of our Lively Eaters therapists to support with Feeding Therapy to build your childs trust and confidence with new foods. You may be wondering how this can be put in motion - first thing is to ask your Planner to include Dietetics under Therapy Supports or Early Childhood Early Intervention. If your child is tube fed please ask your current Hospital dietitian to write a summary report of the predicted formula and equipment requirements for the next year so this can be put forward to your NDIS planner. Please do not leave the Hospital Dietetic system until youve had your NDIS plan reviewed with additional funding added for Dietetics. Then contact Amalie at Lively Eaters to make an appointment with Rachel or Alice - it doesnt matter where in Australia you are - we work with families all over the country and have done for the last 10 years!

12.01.2022 Its EOS Awareness week! "Imagine if food caused pain... nausea reflux was hard to swallow or even suddenly became stuck in your oesophagus.... That can be the reality for someone living with an eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorder (EGID)" Eosinophils (pronounced ee-oh-sin-oh-fills) is a cell that plays an important role within our body including as defence against parasitic infections (e.g. worms), and involvement in some forms of hypersensitivity and allergy. In some ...people, eosinophils live in the gut potentially from food, airborne allergens and other unknown triggers. EOS awareness week is an opportunity to bring support to those in need and perhaps challenge us to take the Top 8 challenge for a day, to experience the perspective of those with EOS. The Top 8 challenge is removing the top 8 allergy causing foods from your diet (milk, eggs, wheat, fish, peanuts, tree nuts, soy and shelfish) just for one day! The NAPCAN provide some great resources around this very prevalent issue https://www.napcan.org.au/national-child-protection-week/

07.01.2022 Each small step in your childs eating and drinking journey should be acknowledged, celebrated and remembered. Without the small steps, we dont end up with the big picture - you cant build a house without stacking hundreds of bricks on top of each other. Often families loose sight of the small but significant steps their child makes with eating/drinking. Think about the tube fed child who learns to sit at a meal for 15 minutes without throwing all food presented - yes they are not yet eating but they are learning to sit in the food environment. How about the 4 year old who screams everytime something different is put on their plate? When they begin to tolerate a new food sitting their without getting upset - this is HUGE! Celebrate the small steps and the big steps will follow.
07.01.2022 Do you have kids living between two homes? Are your kids finding it harder than usual to transition from dads to mums house or mums to dads house? The uncertainty around coronavirus (COVID-19) is impacting us all, and kids in particular. Kids will show us their worries through their behaviour at times like this, and having trouble with everyday transitions is one way you might see that. Get in touch with Mel or Lynly at Lively Eaters if you would like a Teletherapy or phone session to help make transitions smoother for everyone.
