17.01.2022 - Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs caused by infection. When this extends to the outer layer of the lung it becomes pleurisy. Both of these conditions result in significantly costs to producers through on-farm losses and at the abattoirs. 10.01.2022 - #Arthritis costs the #Australian #sheep industry $39 million annually through reduced growth rates and increased deaths on-farm, and increased carcass trimming and condemnation at the abattoir. Arthritis is caused when bacteria enters open wounds on sheep such as those which may occur at shearing and mulesing, through the umbilical cord at birth or due to dog bites. Animals with arthritis will have hot swollen joints, show s...igns of stiffness and lameness and may be reluctant to move. Prevention is always better than cure! Producers should aim to: 1. Carry out marking or shearing in clean and dust-free environments 2. If possible, try to avoid wet/muddy conditions when performing husbandry procedures to reduce flystrike risk 3. Put lambs on their feet when released from the cradle to avoid dirt entering marking wounds 4. Use clean and sharp marking equipment which is disinfected regularly 5. Consider vaccinating against Erysipelas if located in a high risk area. Arthritis is one of the conditions monitored through the Enhanced Abattoir Surveillance Program.
