15.01.2022 Is Sugar Really As Addictive As Cocaine? You dont eat that much sugar not compared to some people at least but then again the idea of going sugar-free for ...21 days still isnt a pleasant prospect. No biscuits at morning tea, no more dark chocolate and no more of those healthy treats and drinks. As long as you get your drip-feed it's all good right? But what if, like Houston we have a problem. Everybody has heard some statement bandied around about sugar being as addictive as cigarettes or cocaine by now but whats the deal? Studies exploring this notion have been done since the 70s which is where the idea first emerged. Even rats addicted to cocaine could be weened off that drug onto sugar if given the choice and rats can be real coke-fiends. But then a few years back a 2014 Edinburgh University study concluded that sugar addiction was not a biochemical dependency but a psychological one similar to gambling. This research has done the rounds leaving many people confused. Having worked with street kids in Kings Cross, long term heroine addicts and white-collar porn or gambling addicts, from my perspective the distinction between psychological addictions and substance addictions isnt a helpful one. As anyone who knows someone with a gambling addiction can testify addiction is addiction and drugs come in many shapes and forms. Biochemically this is because all addictions ultimately reduce to a dopamine addiction, which is our brains pleasure and reward molecule. So in a way it doesnt matter if youre addicted to relationships, chocolate, facebook, praise, work, cigarettes or coffee youre addicted to a simple way of releasing dopamine in your brain. So what about sugar? The research is actually pretty unanimous over-all sugar is a PROFOUNDLY addictive substance and peoples brains on sugar do indeed behave a lot like peoples brains on cocaine. It even appears to be more addictive than cocaine. Not only that, but the more you use an external dopamine-hack like sugar or cocaine the less your brain responds to normal pleasure and reward bursts leaving you uninspired, demotivated and ready for the next peak pleasure moment. According to researchers from Queensland University of Technology (QUT), excessive sugar consumption definitely increases the dopamine levels in a similar way to other drugs such as cocaine. The study also found that long-term consumption of sugar will eventually cause a reduction in dopamine levels. That means people need to consume higher and higher levels of sugar in order to reach the same reward levels and avoid states of depression. The researchers also found in a separate study that chronic exposure to sucrose can cause eating disorders. Just in case this study could be wrong however, other researchers have surveyed the entire field of sugar-cocaine literature and concluded: Overall, this research has revealed that sugar and sweet reward can not only substitute to addictive drugs, like cocaine, but can even be more rewarding and attractive. So what to do? Well before considering herbs like Gymnema which reduce sugar cravings, my experience has shown that its crucial to find out why you were self-medicating in the first place. The answer is generally that your life is currently not as rewarding as it could be: youre in the wrong relationship, the wrong job or maybe just the wrong life. Supplements like gymnema are precisely that supplements and what they are supplementing is you getting your life on track. So if this is you then remember that life itself can be sweet if you set it up right; orient yourself towards a life that is meaningful and full of purpose and your addictions will be easy to shrug. Anything less than this is a cheap circus booby-prize. If you need further support, you dont have to white-knuckle this alone reach out and book in for a private consultation with someone who does this kind of work. 02.01.2022 The Isolation Epidemic: Loneliness Is A Killer Feeling unmet, disconnected and lonely? Thats because ironically, in the age of social media, although weve nev...er technically been more connected before in all of history - we are actually currently in the grips of an epidemic of isolation and the number of people who say they have no confidant has nearly tripled in two decades. On Monday a woman sat in front of me in clinic suffering from anxiety and depression that I diagnosed as a Vitamin T deficiency Touch Deficiency. I told her it was normal to feel the way she did when separated from community and confidents. When I said it was a basic biological need and that you wouldnt keep a rabbit in a box she broke down and cried: why would I do that to myself then? she wept. Social isolation is actually a major medical risk and is comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day in terms of the risk of early death. Furthermore it is actually worse for us than well-known risk factors such as physical inactivity and is twice as dangerous as obesity (Holt-Lunstad, 2010). It is so deadly that it is on par with drinking 6 standard alcoholic beverages every day. Think about all that for a moment seriously! In fact a wide range of research suggests that loneliness should be assessed by all doctors as a standard practice because it is implicated in so many different diseases: Loneliness increases the risk of high blood pressure (Hawkley et al, 2010) Lonely individuals are also at higher risk of the onset of disability (Lund et al, 2010) Loneliness puts individuals at greater risk of cognitive decline (James et al, 2011) lonely people have a 64% increased chance of clinical dementia (Holwerda et al, 2012) Lonely individuals are more prone to depression (Cacioppo et al, 2006) and depressed individuals have compromised immunity putting them at a greater risk of a wide range of infections. Its actually a vicious cycle as illness reduces peoples ability to socialise, which leads in turn to isolation and loneliness, which then exacerbates illness. The science behind this cycle is explained by some fascinating science, summarised in a recent paper in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology. Chemicals called cytokines, which function as messengers in the immune system and cause inflammation, also change our behaviour, encouraging us to withdraw from general social contact. This, the paper argues, is because sickness, during the more dangerous times in which our ancestral species evolved, made us vulnerable to attack. So the body amps up inflammatory cytokines when we are isolated to prime us for injury, wounding and subsequent immunolgocal attack. It's a veritable storm of sadness. As Ive posted on previously, inflammation is now also believed to contribute to depression and people who are depressed tend to have higher cytokine levels. The truly painful part of this is that as with a flu, inflammatory cytokines lower mood and while separating us from society as a whole, makes us want to huddle closer to those we love provided we have such cuddle-buddies in our life. It turns out intimacy is one of the most potent medicines we know of according to scientific studies: A famous paper published in PLOS Medicine in 2010 reviewed 148 studies, involving 300,000 people, and discovered that those with strong social relationships had a 50% lower chance of death! In addition to this it has been shown that: HIV patients with strong social support have lower levels of the virus than those without women have better chances of surviving colorectal cancer if they have strong connections. Young children who are socially isolated appear more likely to suffer from coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes in adulthood Older patients with either one or two chronic diseases do not have higher death rates than those who are not suffering from chronic disease as long as they have high levels of social support. This is why every session I give comes with 2 free hugs one when you arrive and one when you leave. After 10 seconds it has been shown that Oxytocin is released and this primes the immune system amongst other things. Besides, the world needs more hugs. The trick is if you are feeling lonely however, to end the cycle you HAVE to reach out. So spread the love people, this doesnt have to be the age of loneliness, lets have the historians record it as the great cuddle renaissance instead.
