24.01.2022 Miles Qld Next stop after St George was Miles. We took the back road from Westmar through Inglestone, Meandarra and Condamine. We stayed 4 nights at the Miles Showgrounds. Miles was originally called ‘Dogwood Crossing’ in 1844 by Explorer Ludwig Leichhardt but was later changed to Miles after William Miles who was a minister for Railways and local member of Parliament.... We went for a drive to Wandoan, Caliguel Lagoon, Condamine Bell and Chinaman’s Lagoon. We checked out the water tank art in Wandoan and the free camp which had some painted buildings. Next stop was the free camp at Caliguel Lagoon (past it on the way to Miles so came back to check it out). It was quiet a busy free camp. There were some cows across the lagoon having a swim to cooloff in the heat. On the way back we stopped off at the Condamine Bell. The last stop was at Chinamans’s Lagoon to check out all the water lily’s. 23.01.2022 Karlu Karlu AKA Devils Marbles After leaving Aileron, we drove to Wauchope and stayed at the Devil’s Marbles Hotel as we couldn’t camp at Karlu Karlu as it is a national park. After setting up, I headed up to the Karlu Karlu national park which is only a 10 minute drive. I only did a couple of the short walks around Devils Marbles as it was getting late in the afternoon. There is a restricted area where you can take any photos... Karlu Karlu translated into English means ‘round boulders’ Had a great meal at @devilsmarbleshotel . The hotel has some beautiful murals painted on the front of the hotel. 23.01.2022 The Original Adelaide River Queen Jumping Crocodile Cruises - 2nd visit As I enjoyed The Original Adelaide River Queen Jumping Crocodile tour the 1st time, I decide to go again so Drink Wild Air and I ventured out again. This time I went at low tide so I could hopefully see a crocodile on the bank rather than just in the water. We saw Jodie the Jabiru. Nifty the 70 year old crocodile was also after a fed but it took a while to get him to jump. He is missing a few teeth.... Agro found us and the guide managed to get this 100 year old crocodile on the bank. He does have a couple of war wounds. 22.01.2022 Tiwi By Design Tour @drink_wild_air and I did a tour to the Tiwi Islands. It is 2.5 hour ferry to get to Tiwi Island. ... Once we got to Tiwi Deisgn, they performed a Welcome to Country Ceremony with a few traditional dances. They also explained the culture of the Tiwi People. We then had some morning tea before the group split into 2. One group stayed at Tiwi By Design to watch how they screen print the designs onto fabric. We also got the chance to print out a design to keep on either a t-shirt, tea towel or piece of fabric. The 2nd group then went on a tour of the town. Due to covid most of the town was still closed so they tour was outside and the church (this church was used in the movie Top End Wedding). After lunch the 2 groups swapped. 20.01.2022 Aileron NT After leaving Gemtree, next stop was Aileron. It was a pretty windy day so I stopped here to get some work done and have a look at the sculptures around the park. There is a giant sculpture of an Aboriginal Warrior on the top of the hill. He is known as the Anmatjere Man. The sculpture is 17 metres high to the tip of the spear.... 16.01.2022 Riversands Vineyard - St George Qld Riversands Vineyard is located on the banks of the Balonne River in St George. I went and had morning tea in the outdoor garden café at the Vineyard. They do cellar door and have a café.... The white grapes are sold to Woolworths so they are well maintained and get covered up to reduce sunburn on the grapes. The red grapes are turned into fortified muscats and ports. 16.01.2022 Gemtree Caravan Park NT After leaving Alice Springs we headed north east to Gemtree Caravan Park for a few nights. Gemtree is located 70kms east of the Stuart Highway on the Plenty Highway (which is mostly a single lane road). I did the Garnet Fossicking Tour which is about a 5-6 hours of fossicking for garnets. As I was the only solo person on the tour, the process took a lot longer as I had to dig, pick, shift and then pick out the stones.... That afternoon we had a great thunderstorm come rolling in. 15.01.2022 Pine Creek NT After the week at Mataranka, we headed to Pine Creek and stayed the night @ Pussy Cat Flats which is the racecourse at Pine Creek. Enjoyed happy hour under the undercover area with the other travellers staying there for the night. I spotted some of the brumbies in the area, which leave their mess along the racetrack.... Also spotted a cheeky parrot in the tree on the way back from checking out the brumbies. It costs $5 to enter and you can view over 60 years of work by Stavros (Steve Margaritis) (who I had the pleasure of meeting and seeing him in action carving the emu eggs). It is amazing to see what Stavros has carved over the years. There are lots of letters of appreciation. ... 11.01.2022 Ryans Well After leaving Gemtree we headed back to the Stuart Highway to continue our travels north. We stopped at Ryans Well Historic Reserve. There is the well on one side of the highway and the homestead on the other side. The well was hand dug in 1889 to supply water to the travellers along the Overland Telegraph Line.... The Glen Maggie Homestead was built in 1914 and in 1921 it became an office for the Overland Telegraph Line. 08.01.2022 Darwin NT We spent 4.5 weeks in Darwin, staying at the Discovery Park Darwin. I did spend a lot of the time working. The park is close to Darwin city so was a great place for a base. We initially only booked in for 2 weeks to see a few sights and get back on the road except with no caravan brakes, we had to wait to get this issue sorted. Let’s just say I’m glad that I wasn’t in a hurry to get back on the road. If ... anyone knows what NT stands for then your will know what I mean. With Darwin being a military area there were defence helicopters flying over the park, that vibrated the van as they flew overhead. Can you spot it above the van? There are some amazing sunsets up here in Darwin. Even look like the colours of fairy floss. 06.01.2022 Adelaide River NT - Snake Creek Armament Depot WWII I took a drive out to the Snake Creek Armament Depot WWII. It is amazing to see that some of the structures are still standing even though there is evidence that a bushfire came through not that long ago and others that look as though a cyclone has just past through. Some of the structures would be well hidden from eyes above as they are built into the side of a hill.... Look out for the IGTV of the drive through the base. 01.01.2022 Mataranka NT After leaving the Free camp we headed for Mataranka Homestead for a week. I spent the mornings working and the afternoon soaking in the thermal pools. The BP in town is being renovated and they have installed a bakery (they have some yummy treats) and new undercover outdoor area for dining.... I picked up some gourmet treats for Bahloo in Alice Springs from The Dog House while I was working he munched on a Moo & Roo Treat which is a hoof filled with dehydrated roo meat. And then passed out in his weirdo sleeping positions.
