20.01.2022 At Living Proud, we were disappointed to hear the disparaging comments from Perth’s Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas aired on 6PR on Wednesday morning. Sadly, the Trans and gender diverse communities in Australia are all too familiar with these types of public conversation, but in the few days since the broadcast the WA LGBTIQA+ community has been reeling from this unexpected attack on their identities by an elected official. In the wake of these comments, Living Proud would like to...Continue reading

17.01.2022 Today marks Trans Day of Remembrance, and the end of Trans Awareness Week. It's fitting that a celebration of our lives also recognises that for so many of our ...communities, harm, hardship, and violence are a daily experience. Today we reflect on the trans people who have been killed in the past year, and back through history. We think of the names of those counted, and the countless names that go unwritten or unrecognised as their authentic selves in death. Over the last year 350 trans people have lost their lives through transphobic violence, the vast majority were trans women of colour in the US, Brazil and Mexico. Today we stand with our Sistergirls and trans sisters of colour, who bear the brunt of transphobic violence. Today we can all say "enough", pledge that there must be fewer names, and fewer deaths each year and keep fighting for the living. Image description Three candles the colours of the trans flag are burning. Below them reads "Trans Day of Remembrance, 20 November 2020".

13.01.2022 Breaking the Silence: Identifying as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQ+ Community Survey. Are you Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and LGBTIQ+ living in WA and over the age of 18? This survey is the first of its kind in WA, led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQ+ researchers from Kurongkurl Katitjin, Centre for Indigenous Australian Education and Research Edith Cowan University. ... This is part of a project aiming to understand what life is like for you in your communities and how easy or difficult it is for you to access appropriate health and wellbeing support. The survey is confidential unless you choose not to remain anonymous. We know that very often Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander/LGBTIQ voices are not heard so this is your opportunity to speak up and be genuinely listened to. The survey will take around 15-20 minutes to complete. https://eaecu.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_4MKqpQZ4A8SWyQl

05.01.2022 Working together to prevent suicide: National LGBTI Health Alliance statement on World Suicide Prevention Day 10 September 2019 Today (10 September 2019) marks ...World Suicide Prevention Day across the globe and provides a unique opportunity to collectively shine a light on suicide prevention both politically and at a community level. Harnessing this momentum is critical to ensure productive and meaningful solutions are put in place to drive suicide rates down. Suicide is a prominent community concern in Australia with the ABS reporting 3,128 deaths by suicide in 2017. Globally, it is responsible for over 800,000 deaths. Significant knowledge gaps remain for LGBTI people and communities. This morning I had the honour of attending Suicide Prevention Australia and the Parliamentary Friends of Suicide Prevention, World Suicide Prevention Day Breakfast at Parliament House. It was wonderful to see strong support from all sides of politics for suicide prevention. We were asked to shine a light on suicide prevention each and every day and I am asking that when we do this, that we ensure that we acknowledge LGBTI communities who are too often left in the dark, said Nicky Bath, Executive Director. LGBTI people still experience a higher risk of suicidal behaviours than non-LGBTI people. This can be attributed to the impact of Minority Stress - the chronic stressors that LGBTI people are uniquely exposed to including experiences of discrimination, social exclusion, harassment and physical violence. Everyone has a role to play in preventing suicide and it is important to recognise that government policy such as the Religious Discrimination Bill that is currently being considered is not conducive to the governments zero suicides target. said Ms Bath. Suicide prevention remains a universal challenge. Every year, suicide is among the top 20 leading causes of death globally for people of all ages. We still do not know how many LGBTI people die by suicide. This is due to LGBTI indicators not being captured in coroner report data, said Ms. Bath The inclusion of sexual orientation, gender identity and intersex questions in national population research, specifically the 2021 Census, and at the health and social service utilisation level is vital if we are to tackle the ongoing significant health disparities among LGBTI people and communities, Ms. Bath concluded. World Suicide Prevention Day is organised by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP). If you are experiencing distress and would like to talk with someone on the phone or over the web, then please call QLife on 1800 184 527 or go to www.qlife.org.au Media Contact: Nicky Bath, Executive Director Mobile: 0432 328 706 email: [email protected]
