23.01.2022 Help stop the spread of Heartworm Disease in the Livingstone community! There has been an alarming number of positive Heartworm cases within Livingstone Shire over the past few months. Heartworm is a parasitic round worm that infects dogs and is transmitted when an infected mosquito feeds on a dog. The Heartworm larvae enter the dogs blood stream where they begin to mature and make their way through the blood stream into the dog’s heart, lungs and associated blood vessels. ... With numbers increasing so quickly in our community, we are helping to spread the word about how you can protect your fur babies from this potentially fatal parasite. Below are the signs and symptoms to look out for: Coughing Becoming lethargic Loss of appetite Having difficulties breathing Tire rapidly after only moderate exercise Please be aware that infected dogs may not show any of these signs until there has been significant damage done to their internal organs. To find out if your pet is infected, you can request a very simple blood test that takes 10 minutes of your time. Please contact your local vet to make an appointment or to check that your pet is up to date with their Heartworm prevention.

18.01.2022 A lithium battery is the suspected culprit that sparked a fire at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Parkhurst a little over two weeks ago. The battery was placed in a yellow-lidded bin at kerbside and transported inconspicuously to the recycling facility where the item had a devastating impact. Portfolio holder of Water, Waste management and the Environment, Councillor Andrea Friend said she is asking the community to really focus on their recycling. ... Putting the wrong thing in your bin can actually put workers in danger, we’re extremely lucky that no-one was injured during this incident, Cr Friend said. "The loss of this facility has obviously had an enormous impact on normal operations, and Livingstone Shire Waste and Recycling has had to respond very quickly." For more information on waste and recycling collection, please visit: https://www.livingstone.qld.gov.au//my/waste-and-recycling

17.01.2022 How many did you get right? Here are the answers to our #NationalRecyclingWeek 'Recycle Right Match-Up' activity sheet that we posted earlier in the week! Did you remember that the below items can't be recycled? If not, here's why...... Plastic straws are too lightweight and small to make it through the recycling sorter. Shopping receipts have harmful chemicals and are made from more than one material which are impossible to separate. Coathangers are tanglers - Materials Recovery Factories (MRF) shut down an average of 3-4 times a day to untangle materials from their equipment. Takeaway coffee cups are made of paper and plastic which can't be separated. Paper or cardboard packaging with food/oil on (burger/pizza box) because the paper can't be separated from the oils. Spray lids are made of multiple materials and have metal springs inside. Nappies, as well as being yucky and a health risk to MRF sorters also contaminate the paper recycling stream. See more

08.01.2022 SUSTAINABLE SATURDAY Do your food scraps go straight in the bin? Food waste makes up over one-third of household waste and almost half of all waste to landfill. In the landfill environment, this food waste produces methane, a greenhouse gas that is 25 times stronger than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere ... You can help reduce food waste by: Looking in the pantry and fridge before shopping and sticking to a shopping list. The average household throws out $1,026 worth of food every year! Setting up a compost system, worm farm or Bokashi bucket at home. Composting is a great way to reduce the amount of food waste you send to landfill. It's also a brilliant way to get free fertiliser for the garden. Contacting your local community garden to find out if you can contribute to their composting system. Asking neighbours with chickens if they could use extra scraps. The ShareWaste app connects people who wish to recycle their kitchen scraps with their neighbours who are already composting, worm-farming or keep chickens. Freezing anything that you could eat or use at a later date. Making stocks and condiments from the parts of your food usually going in the bin. Watch and listen to what Costa Georgiadis has to say to get some great tips on composting at home!
