Change the combination to new homes/apartments (You don't know who had the keys before you or how many copies there are)... Don't put the address on the key tag (The bad guys will get to your home before you realize you have lost the keys) Lock security doors with the key; not the switch (The security door is only a barrier to a stranger when you know it is definitely locked) Lubricate locks regularly (Many faults can be prevented or remedied by lubrication with silicon or teflon sprays) Learn how to fit smoke detectors and replace batteries regularly (Smoke kills and limits visibility. Smoke detectors save lives) Keep a spare key for important locks (Don't keep all your eggs in one basket. It is far cheaper to duplicate a key than change the combination to a lock) Photocopy keys and keep them in a SECURE file. (It is possible to make a key based on a photocopy which can save you a lot of money) Don't leave keys in door locks, window locks or patio bolts (The purpose of these locks is to make the bad guys leave the way they came which limits the time they have to steal from you) Don't buy cheap padlocks or chain (They are an investment for you and not any particular property and will last a long time if lubricated)
