16.01.2022 Hi all, For those of you who saw Scott Morrisons announcement tonight, it will come as no suprise that sadly we need to close the flying field. Hopefully this will be a short lived situation.... Please do not access the field until further notice. Probably a good time to fire up the simulator, do some repairs, finish that model youve been working on or have a backyard fun fly.... Stay safe everyone and well see you on the other side.

11.01.2022 Had a fly at the club today and a liitle bit of aerial combat thrown in. I managed to knock the Presidents Bonsai out of the sky while I suffered no damage at all and just kept flying. My Teksumo has the yellow nose. The Bonsai was nearly chopped in half.
11.01.2022 Josh flew his giant scale piper Pawnee. Ended with a collapsed under carriage but no damage and it was an easy fix at the field.
10.01.2022 Just had a fantastic day with the members of the Coominya Club who came for a visit today. Fabulous BBQ lunch put on by our members. This is what being in a club is all about. Lots of flying, great company and great food.

08.01.2022 A bit of aero tow fun at the field this weekend.
08.01.2022 Dear All, ALL CLUB FLYING SUSPENDED This is a challenging time for everyone given the current global threats to our health and financial wellbeing.... Due to the rapidly evolving situation (and likewise rapidly changing government directives) up until now we have been providing ad hoc advice to members and clubs to simply follow the relevant government directives. This has resulted in several different approaches by clubs based on their particular circumstances. However, the latest Queensland Chief Health Officers directives (enforceable by law) are now clear with respect to confinement to home and non-essential travel. In essence the directive is as follows: All people must stay in their homes except for: 1. shopping for essentials - food and necessary supplies; 2. medical or health care needs, including compassionate requirements; 3. exercise with no more than one other person (unless from your household); 4. providing care or assistance to an immediate family member; 5. work and study if you cant work or learn remotely. It is now clear that sneaking out for a quick fly will breach these directives. Likewise, congregating at your local club is also unacceptable. It is our view that all clubs should now be shut and all operations suspended. We urge all clubs and our members to do the right thing and follow the rules. One further point requires clarification. We have been asked about whether the MAAA insurance policy still covers you in the current circumstances. Yes it does. If you are fortunate enough to have your own flying facility "in your backyard" and the use of the facility satisfies the other requirements of the MAAA MOPS you will continue to have the benefit of the MAAA liability insurance. However, I once again refer to the public health directive limiting gatherings to not more then two people and urge our members and clubs to do the right thing in these circumstances. This is a trying time. If you can, take advantage of the opportunity to build a new model or do some maintenance (most of our hobby shops are more then happy to help you out with some mail order deliveries). I look forward to holding some fantastic aeromodelling events when the current challenges are behind us. Regards Michael Hobson MAAQ President

04.01.2022 Just to let you know that one of our TARMAC Members Mr Mike Sharp has had a LIPO Fire at his workshop while charging a 5S LIPO battery at 9 am on Sunday 20/10/2...019. Fortunately Mike managed to put the fire out but not without sustaining some burns and not without damage to his workshop and aircraft. This event brings home to me and to all of us that the risk of LIPO Fires is real and may occur at any time especially upon charging. I ask all TARMAC Members to re assess their LIPO battery management and to control the risk of LIPO fire. 1. Keep LIPO batteries clean and dry, out of contact with any random metal objects and at safe, non-extreme temperatures 2. Store and transport LIPO batteries in fire proof bags or fire proof containers 3. Use a LIPO charger set to the correct battery type and charge rate when charging 4. Ensure your LIPO charger is well maintained and in good condition with good electrical connections 5. Ensure that LIPOs are charged in a safe well ventilated area free of combustible material - many place the LIPO within a fire proof bag while charging 6. Ensure that LIPO charging is monitored do not leave a charging battery unattended 7. In the event that a LIPO overheats during charging immediately disconnect and place the battery in a safe area and consider disposal 8. Properly dispose of damaged or puffed up LIPO batteries 9. It is good practice to check from time to time the internal resistance of the LIPO battery for each cell. Modern LIPO chargers and charge indicators have this measuring facility. Then when the resistance exceeds a limit ( e.g. below 8 mOhm per cell good, 15 mOhm per cell on way out, above 25 mOhm per cell time to dispose of) Dispose of the battery correctly and replace with a new one. High internal resistance will also lead to poor performance. 10. Do not tamper with nor short out a LIPO battery - excessive currents may cause the battery to overheat catch fire or explode. 11. Do not overcharge LIPOs - overcharging will cause them to overheat and catch fire. Make sure you have a good quality charger which cuts off at the correct maximum charge voltage (4.2 volt per cell) 12. Have a fire extinguisher within reach and in good condition and know how to use it. Message from Mike about the fire: "A battery was on charge nearly full and I went for a shower, 10 minutes later I returned to the room and it was engulfed in flames, I managed to get the fire out with a hose though not before a lot of damage to the room and to my planes, I also received some burns to my hands, back of head and foot though nothing too bad, I believe the battery on charge caused the fire, all this occurred when I left the room for 10 minutes." - Mike is a well experienced Member of our TARMAC club who takes a lot of care with his models and workshop and if a fire like this can happen to him then it can happen for any of us. Please ensure that you look after your LIPO Batteries safely and prevent a fire like this Thank you George Fricker - Secretary for TARMAC
04.01.2022 So the field is open again now but for the moment only to members. Hopefully the Government will ease restrictions soon and we will once again be able to welcome visitors to our field. So the field is open again now but for the moment only to members. 03.01.2022 What are you doing whilst confined to quarters. Lets all continue to be connected by using social media. Show us what projects you are working on and what you ...will be flying when the current we have our big post Covid19 flying. I will start the ball rolling. I am currently utilising my time installing an OS GT 15 petrol engine into my Seagull Junkers Cl1. I originally had a saito 72 four stroke in it but the aircraft was slightly underpowered. As the cowling had been cut to fit the Saito, I had to re-modify it to suit the GT-15 - in fact nearly a total re-build. See more
