25.01.2022 For those looking for some light entertainment on this Tuesday evening look no further than our T20 clash with the North Huon Warriors at 5pm, live from the Sandfly Memorial Oval. There was a bunch of chat around Clive Rose making an appearance for the Warriors but sadly it isn’t happening. For those who love a finger spinning cult figure however, Scott Stumpy Reid will don the XXL maroon shirt and dazzle Warrior bats with his mesmerising array of wafters, dippers and arm balls. Yup Yip!!

24.01.2022 Community Announcement. There’s people doing it a lot tougher than us right now that’s for certain; our Victorian friends come to mind then there’s those of Beirut who have had their bustling city crushed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Our thoughts and prayers however are not with the morons that think driving onto our ground and scarring it like Tommy Flanagan’s face is a credible act. ... Within our four walls are some of the communities finest sleuths, so whilst you may be roaming free today, rest assured you’ll be found and dealt with accordingly. Likely a visit from Frank Gilroy this time as a three time offender. We are saddened by the act and the impact it will have on the increasing number of juniors that get to enjoy the facility. Not to mention our own members. To close out on a positive note we cannot wait for the season ahead. With an unchanged coaching lineup and some fresh faces in we will represent the shirt and community with aplomb. Yip Yip! Ps. Any assistance on this matter would be warmly received.

23.01.2022 Our Eagle friends up the highway are on the hunt for a suitably qualified helmsman to steer their ship into unchartered waters. And we at Sandfly are holding our AGM this Sunday at the clubrooms at 1130am. We hope to see as many smiling faces as is possible. ... Yip Yip

21.01.2022 A Grade Match Report v Kettering Conditions were reminiscent of much of the 2019/20 season with persistent showers crossing the Sandfly cricket ground as the Bunyips hosted the Kettering Mariners for their home opener. Each side had tasted defeat to start the season and it was the Mariners who batted first, facing up to the returning Sam Unsworth with matchsticks propping open the eyelids following the recent arrival of baby Violet....Continue reading

21.01.2022 It’s been a long winter for many of us. We’ve experienced record rainfall, snow dumps to 227m, a global pandemic and the annual Bell End Burnout event at Sandfly Memorial. To say we are keen to hit the synthetic would be similar to suggesting Victorian’s are eager for peak hour to return to Punt Road. With that said, the opportunity to see your old mates, make some new ones and try and negotiate the white ball against the whitewashed backdrop of the TCA indoor nets will be ...yours at 10am on September 13. Can’t wait to see all your smiling faces. Yip Yip!

20.01.2022 Longley International Hotel match report v Snug Not since Sir Vivian Richards switched from County Glamorgan to Somerset has there been a more stunning start to a campaign than that of former Southern Tiger Jake Barry, now suiting up for the Maroons of Sandfly. In his 5 outings this season he has amassed 384 runs at 192. To go with that he has 10 wickets at 16.20. On top of that he’s as humble as he is tranquil. ...Continue reading

18.01.2022 Whilst the Bunyip remains in isolation, he does not sleep. When times are tough the Bunyip finds a way forward. After a great year, we have some more welcome news to share. Tonight we are extremely pleased to announce to our people that we’ve signed Southern Tiger club champion Jake Barry. Jake has been a mainstay for the Tigers over the last decade or more. A celebrated all-rounder with a record that stacks up with the very best in our association. ... We are delighted to welcome Jake and his young family to our club. The form.... Runs 4822 @ 31.11 Wickets 235 @ 21.36 Yip Yip!

18.01.2022 We can all agree it was the bowling unit that did the majority of the heavy lifting throughout the season but there were still some fine moments with the stick. Which was the finest?

17.01.2022 Dustin Fletcher and Simon Madden are the only two players to have surpassed 350 games for his beloved Bombers and on Sunday one of the all-time great Bunyips notches that milestone of his own. Gregory Daniel Roberts bleeds Bunyip. His rough as guts, take no prisoners approach is nothing but a facade. Those in the know, inside the four walls of Sandfly Memorial understand him to be a gentle soul whose love for a maroon shirt with Longley on the front is second only to wife, ki...ds and a Cascade Draught can. On Sunday at Lightwood Park against the Eagles of Summerleas in a C Grade fixture that would be better suited in Friday night primetime, Robbo will grace the cricket field for the Bunyips for the 350th time. Having debuted towards the end of the Vietnam War, a young Robbo wouldn't have dreamed of keeping his rage in check to the point that he could be fit enough to play 350 games as well as being a Premiership president to boot. The Longley Cricket Club would not be the joint it is today without the contributions that Robbo has and continues to make. On Sunday in a milestone game and a knockout final, we know that Robbo will be more fired up than Pat Benatar and will "have a lot to get through". Congratulations Reg on a magnificent achievement. To all the Bunyip faithful, what better way to spend your long weekend Sunday than cheering Robbo and the C grade lads home at Lightwood Park. Yip, Yip!

17.01.2022 4th generation Bunyip Ryan Bradburn making his A grade debut at 14 alongside his dad today. Grandfather Byron witnessed Ryan’s first wicket, great grandfather Ron sprinkled the magic dust from heaven above. Bunyips win, Bradburn’s make history Yip Yip!

16.01.2022 What a bowling unit we had this season. Some say our greatest attack ever. What are your thoughts and which bowling performance was your favourite?

15.01.2022 Ladies and gentleman, children and other interested parties of the district. It’d take a severe outbreak of the Spanish Flu for this seasons Grand Final to be abandoned on Saturday. So load the VN Commodore with some great friends, a wallet full of pineapples, some Chattahoochee cheer and hit the A6 for a day out supporting your favourite men in maroon. There’ll be the usual trimmings; Robbo’s Salad Rolls, a fully stocked fridge and temperature controlled National Pies. In ...addition to that there’ll be an all day BBQ and less parking than usual. The one and only other A grade Grand Final that we competed in was in fact played at Kettering in 1981 so this is a first for us at Sandfly. But we have prepared well and ensure a best in class GRAND FINAL experience for all comers. Sleep well and drink plenty of water, only 5 sleeps to go. To our wonderful sponsors we couldn’t thank you enough. 14.01.2022 Q) What’s hotter than Colman’s Mustard? A) Colegrave’s Falcon. Particularly the vinyl bench seat when it’s been bathing in Sandfly sunshine whilst the master craftsman has been at work. Luckily for he he has a collection of quilted blankets stored in the trunk for such occasions. The Falcon is off to the vegan capital of Tasmania tomorrow as we tackle the Roadies of Slab Road. Bring a picnic blanket and a warm smile, you may get in for free. If Sandfly is more your jam, go ...and see the Seconds strut their stuff as they come up against the North Huon Warriors. The Thirds have the AJ Tye (the week off). Yip Yip!

13.01.2022 T20 is on the menu this Saturday and some new faces are the feature. The Reid brothers headline a new look side with former Aussie U/19 Dion Kratz making his club debut. Shaun Leslie Richardson plays his first ever T20 and is the only other playing member to be earth side when World Series Cricket was born. The other has earlobes of silver and a shiny cranium. See you at the stadium. Yip Yip!

13.01.2022 Whilst we have our name etched onto the premiership shield for the 19/20 campaign it must be said that not playing on the day flattened celebrations marginally. A terrific win in Saturday’s semi final has provided us with the opportunity to again be scribed onto the Tiger Coulson Shield. To host the Grand Final and showcase our wonderful home to supporters far and wide has the Bunyip events team bristling. Some weeks ago works were carried out at Sandfly and the 1980 Carlto...n Draught can was recovered from the playing field. It was 1980/81 when we last played on grand final day. Here’s hoping the outcome is similar in a fortnight’s time. Yip Yip!

13.01.2022 It is with much delight that we announce our valued partners at Artery have committed to sponsoring us again in season 2020/21. They have been a wonderfully generous contributor over the past few seasons and that they’ve committed during these times is a true sign of their support for our little community club. To that end Artery have extended their generosity to all participating HCCA clubs by offering 30% off all framing. For our followers; the below print as designed by ...our friends at Electric Wicky might be a nice start to your framed print collection. Yip Yip!

10.01.2022 Tasmanian Inn Hotel match report v Blackmans Bay As the saying goes, in life there are no certainties. But in cricket there are. In yesterday’s clash of the upper runged Bunyips and Sharks there were two. Firstly, Chris Hevey was $1.02 to score more than 75 and the other was that Mark Colegrave would have a cooler bag at fine leg housing a can of black aspirin (Coca Cola), two litres of H20 and a Mars Bar. Hevey made 91 and Colegrave had a picnic for one at fine leg. Stand i...Continue reading

09.01.2022 Some light reading for your Monday evening here folks. Hibernating Bunyip caught up with club favourite and fellow nocturnal operator Stumpy Reid. Bunyip - How have you spent the last 4 months in this world of uncertainty? Any fishing trips or walks into the Tarn? Stumpy - Iso has been tough, with Regines closed for deep cleaning (30 years too late) my Tinder datebook is backlogged like you wouldn't believe, luckily I've had time to catch up on the last 6 seasons of farmer w...Continue reading

09.01.2022 On Saturday, in times where social distancing was a little more relaxed, the curtain was drawn on the 2019/20 cricket season at Bunyip headquarters. The premiership was awarded to our A Grade side for the first time in 39 years, and while the circumstances surrounding the Grand Final were far from ideal, we take great pride in the overall result and the hard work put in through the season to put ourselves in that position. With the scheduled awards night on 4 April abandoned,... all player awards were also given on Saturday and we’re pleased to announce the winners were: A Grade Best & Fairest Dan Gray B Grade Best & Fairest Damien Bradburn C Grade Best & Fairest Trad Duggan Club Champion Damien Bradburn Best Clubman Adam Dentler Fenton Family Spirit of Cricket Matthew Reid All batting, bowling and fielding averages and aggregates were also awarded but in the interest of saving you a few hours reading we haven’t named them here. In one of the more touching parts of the day, two Life Memberships were awarded to a pair of lifetime Bunyips that bleed maroon and yellow, and grey in Damien Bradburn and David Sproule. The club couldn’t be prouder to have these two men among the other Life Members at Longley and we look forward to honouring them again at the next presentation night in 2021. The club would like to thank the efforts of all players involved throughout the 2019/20 season in what was a special one for the club with all three teams making finals and the A Grade team winning the premiership. We would also like to acknowledge and thank all of our sponsors for their commitment to the club and wish them all the best in what are extremely tough times for the majority of businesses. Stay safe all, look after each other, and we look forward to doing it all again (hopefully) later in the year. Yip, Yip

08.01.2022 In these strange times it’s nice to be distracted with things that are not COVID-19. Below is some Bunyip Trivia for you to test your knowledge. 07.01.2022 For those that missed the Huon News, A grade have the week off to prepare for a grand final. Well done all involved. The Shaun Richardson led B graders will tackle the 7 gilled sea dwellers of Sherburd Park in tomorrow’s prelim final. Here’s hoping the skipper plays another match winning knock. Let’s get behind the lads in their quest for a grand final berth. Toss at 10am, Roaming Bristle from 830am. 06.01.2022 The tree and tinsel have been stored, the ham on the bone is three sangas away from being but a memory. Cricket is back and so is Liam Ward of Mountain River, by Bruce and Sarah. The galloping colt fresh from the Huonville Lions SFL premiership has undergone an extensive festive training block and will be keen to showcase his wares at the SCG tomorrow. Chris Bowles returns to the B grade side after he and bride Juliá reproduced in late 2020. Brad Dodge also a fine inclusion.... 05.01.2022 In life, there are people who come into organisations and change things for the better. In 2014-2015, this bloke decided it was time to rekindle his cricket career after a 20 year hiatus. He started as a fill in for B Grade, then a couple of A Grade games, the last a resounding 260 run thumping at the hands of North Huon. As someone who had led a number of sporting organisations to success, he must have been wondering what the hell am I doing? At this point Danny had 2 opt...ions. Take his bat and ball and park the desires of recapturing his cricketing youth, or put all his energy into doing what he had done many times before. Helping to build a successful sporting organisation. A best and fairest came in 2015-16, then an off-season in the UK under the tutelage of Australian Assistant Coach Ronny McDonald. Then followed by a couple of years piling runs in A Grade. When, in 2019, the club went looking for a club coach, we looked externally, only to realise we had the best possible candidate already on our books. Danny Gray. 2019-20 was a historic year for our little cricket club. We’d never even made the HCCA finals in A Grade, but Danny’s message was clear. Be resilient, be selfless, work together and success will come. Few could imagine it would come so quickly. It’s hard to imagine a more influential person within a community sporting organisation than Danny. The Longley Cricket Club are truly grateful to have him as our leader, teacher and mate. On Saturday against the Bulls of Huonville the great man will celebrate his 100th club game. He is now running an on-field look similar to fellow musician Robin Gibb but we know he still has plenty of meaningful knocks left in him. Get yourself down to Bunyip home base on Saturday to help celebrate the milestone. Congrats on the 100 games coach, keep doing what you do and the rest of us will continue to follow.

03.01.2022 Tomorrow’s clash v Kingston isn’t just about the crucial 4 points up for grabs. It’s also about a family name synonymous with sport and entertainment in the Channel and beyond. Peter Unsworth, who never played a game of cricket in his life, founded the Crows in ‘86 as a means of keeping the Kingston Footy Club’s playing group together through the summer months. During this time he sired son Sam and managed to keep the playing group jovially united. Ironically, Sam is a Buny...ip club champion among other things. For those that had the pleasure of sharing some time with the giant larrikin should swing into the stadium and recite a tale from his extensive catalogue of bedtime stories. We are after all playing for the Peter Unsworth Memorial Cup. Yip Yip.

01.01.2022 Fuelled by last evenings pumpkin and tofu curries, all three sides will be taking the park this weekend looking to add to their win tallies. Our very own Nicholas Curry Raymond takes his C grade troops into battle with the Eagles at Lightwood Park’s diamond on Sunday. Featuring The Gronk on debut. The Shaun Richardson led B grade chums head to the bull ring at Huonville, travelling with him in the Urvan will be the Reid brothers, the Bradburn father and son combo and Bri...an White of Sydney’s northern beaches. A grade will take to the field in Sam Unsworth’s 100th match. Come early if we bat first and see him whistle a few past the ears of referee Gary Largent. Or call in post match for an autograph from the giant all-rounder if you prefer a tin as the afternoon sun slides behind the rolling hills of Kaoota. Yip Yip!
