08.01.2022 From the Sydney Mail the aftermath of the catastrophe fire at West Wyalong of December 1899 The West Wyalong Fire. On Wednesday night, 29th ultimo, at 10.30, s...moke was noticed issuing from the roof of H. J. Woods's drapery store. The alarm was given quickly, and on the door being burst open it was seen that there was no hope of extinguishing the flames, consequently attention was directed to the adjoining buildings, viz., Bannan's Gladstone Hotel and the New South Wales Bank, but beyond removing the furniture and effects nothing could be done. The flames spread rapidly from the bank to Nagy's plumber's shop, also to a second shop of Nagy's, thence to Rouse's cycle establishment and Poole's bakery. Here the fire was checked from going further east by Poole's yard and the pulling down of Messner's saddlery shop. On the west of Bannan's hotel was Mathews's dental sur- gery, Fletcher's assay office, Slade's newsagent and fancy goods, Norris's general store, White Reef Company's office, Dr. Perry's surgery and resi- dence. Those buildings were quickly enveloped in flames. Next to Dr. Perry's surgery was Berley's assay office, O'Keeffe's saddlery, and Craig's watch- maker and jewellery establishment. Those three buildings were completely pulled down. Further west was McGill's, fruiterer, Butler's, bootmaker, McWilliams's wine shop. Those buildings were partly pulled down, Next was Bernstein's store and the Union Bank, also Wright, Heaton, and Co.'s produce store. So fierce were the flames that the insurance agent gave instructions to have Wright, Heaton's building removed, as it was con- sidered impossible to check the fire before reaching that point. At the rear of Woods' store was situated Waters Brothers' joinery shops and resi- dence, which were totally destroyed, as was also a private residence at the rear of Bannan's hotel. The street was packed with all kinds of merchan- dise, and the vacant ground at the rear was strewn with goods of all kinds, both from the houses destroyed and other buildings in supposed danger. However, by 3 p.m. everything appeared safe, and continued so until 8 a.m. on the 30th ultimo, when it was seen that Basha's drapery and grocery store, situated on the opposite side of the street from the previous fire, was alight. The building is several feet away from any other on the east, and only a gateway dividing it from Mansing and Co.'s large general store. An enormous crowd of people were soon present, and scores of men, armed with axes, ropes, and buckets, under the directions of the police, rendered valuable assistance. The following is the list of insurances : Thomas Basha, 500 in the Atlas, 500 South British, 500 Union, estimated loss 1000 above insurance; Mrs. Bannan, 1000 in the Atlas, estimated loss 1200; H. J. Woods, 750 on the stock; Waters's building, 140 in the Liverpool, Lon- don, and Globe ; Bank building, 200 Liverpool, Lon- don, and Globe ; James Poole, 100 ; H. P. Flet- cher, 50, both in Liverpool and Lancashire ; Mrs. Norris, 100 ; J. H. Fraser, building 100 : McWilliams, stock, 250, in the Lion Office. Fraser's and M'Williams's were not burnt, but the building and stock were greatly damaged. H. Sander, 70, building occupied by Wright, Heaton, in the Phœ- nix ; F. Nagy, on both shops and stock, 200, in the Imperial and Lion ; F. E. Welby, building occupied by Dr. Perry, 100 ; Rouse's building, 75 ; Gough, 100, both in Imperial. Several were not insured, while those who are were not insured in most cases to the extent of one-half of the property destroyed. See more
