23.01.2022 It’s Senior Sunday! Little Abbey found her forever home in January and was our first senior pet adopted in 2021. When she arrived in our care at 12 years of age, Abbey was scared and unsure of the world. Our attendants worked with her to help build her confidence and trust. Abbey’s teeth were in very bad shape, so our vets performed major dental surgery. She spent a month recovering in a foster home before she was ready to be placed up for adoption. ... This senior sweetheart has settled into her retirement home perfectly and brings so much joy to her devoted new mum, Irene. Abbey has changed my life so much. She is perfect and great company. She jumps on my bed and sleeps beside me, and is now comfortable with me patting her, bathing her and picking her up, Irene said. Irene urges everyone to consider adopting an older pet in need of a home. It is just so rewarding, she said. 22.01.2022 Elderly cat Saffy recently arrived at our shelter in need of help. At 14 years old, she had no place to call home and nobody who came looking for her. As an open-intake shelter, we’ll always be there for lost and abandoned pets like Saffy, no matter what their age or health condition. Saffy needed major dental surgery, vet care and lots of TLC from our team to help prepare her for adoption. Being in her senior years and with extra health care needs, we knew it was going to t...ake someone special to give her the loving retirement home she deserved. After more than a month in our care, Saffy’s special someone came along. It was love at first sight when Sandra met this sweet senior, and their bond grows stronger by the day It's only been a few days, but we've already clocked an impressive amount of hours snuggling up on the couch, Sandra said. I love Saffy's confidence. She immediately began exploring her new empire with no fuss. She's not afraid to let me know when she's hungry, which is all the time. 16.01.2022 When Quokka arrived at our shelter, she was so terrified, she couldn’t even walk on a lead. Our caring attendants picked her up and carried her. With no trace of a family or history, we didn’t know what Quokka had been through. But, we were going to make sure she received the love and kindness she deserved, possibly for the first time in her life Quokka’s fur was terribly matted, so our team gave her a groom to help her feel comfortable. With their gentle touch, our vets c...hecked over Quokka to see whether she had any other health concerns. They discovered she had a luxating patella in one of her legs. This condition causes the kneecap to dislocate or move from its normal position, requiring surgery. The shelter was a little overwhelming for Quokka, so she spent some quiet time in the office with shelter staff, where she was spoilt with TLC. She was then placed into a loving foster home in preparation for her surgery and recovery. Our orthopaedic vet performed a delicate operation on Quokka to repair her dislocated kneecap. Of the thousands of procedures performed at our hospital each year, patella surgeries are common. After a month of rehabilitation with her dedicated foster carer, Quokka was happier and healthier than ever! DJ has been diagnosed with feline asthma, which means she’ll need daily medication in the form of an inhaler. She doesn’t let this stop her from living life to the fullest! 16.01.2022 After FIVE YEARS missing, Keith has made it home just in time for his 15th birthday! Keith vanished in 2015, leaving his family devastated After years of anguish and not knowing what had happened to him, they received a life-changing call from our shelter this week. Keith had been found, and he was only a suburb away from where he disappeared. After he was picked up by our Animal Ambulance, our staff were thrilled to find that Keith was microchipped, meaning his family w...as just a phone call away. But, the microchip details weren’t up to date, so we had to put on our detective hats to track down Keith’s owner, Barbara. With the help of Barbara’s former real estate agent, we were able to find her new phone number and give her the call she’d been waiting years to receive. It’s a dream come true. I never stopped hoping that maybe one day I would see him again and on the eve of his birthday is just something extra special, said Barbara A microchip with up-to-date details gives you the best chance of being reunited with a lost pet. 15.01.2022 Not every animal coming into our care is able to cope well in a shelter environment. This is why our network of more than 900 foster carers is so important. They open their homes to our most vulnerable pets and give them the right environment to rehabilitate and thrive, so they can go on to find their forever home. Our dedicated Pathways Team are at the very core of our Foster Care Program and we’d like to introduce you to Eliza, Gemma, and Justine in this week’s ‘Hearts of ...the Home’ series. Making sure our animals have a smooth journey towards a happy, healthy future is both a passion and a focus for the team. We work closely with our large network of foster carers and through the close partnerships we have with rescue groups to be able to do this, said Gemma. In recent years, our Foster Care Program has grown more than ever before. Last year alone, 1,982 pets were placed into foster homes! The team also works with our 70 rescue partners, who also play an important part in rehoming animals with high levels of stress or complex and ongoing long-term medical issues. Eliza, Gemma and Justine often ‘take their work home’ with them. Between them, they have fostered an amazing 152 pets! The team clearly have big hearts - and not just for the animals. As well as caring for animals at the shelter, we also provide around-the-clock emotional support to our foster carers. There’s a lot of work that goes into sending an animal out to foster and it’s not as simple as it may seem, but we wouldn’t have it any other way, said Eliza. Working alongside like-minded people and being part of an animal’s transformation is exceptionally rewarding. But, says Justine, nothing tops a ‘foster fail’ when a foster carer becomes so attached to their foster pet, they decide to adopt them forever Without the support of our wonderful foster carers, we simply wouldn’t be able to transform the lives of so many lost and abandoned pets. As Gemma said, From the bottom of our hearts, thank you! It’s not always an easy gig. Fostering requires a lot from carers and their families. The passion and humility we have witnessed and learned from our incredible foster carers restores our faith in humanity every day.

14.01.2022 Edna arrived at our shelter at 12 years of age, with no place to call home and no-one who came looking for her. Like the hundreds of other seniors and adults in our care, we knew it may take longer for Edna to find a home. Older cats are often overlooked in favour of kittens, especially at this time of year during kitten season. To help those pets who needed it most, we launched our Clear the Cat Shelter adoption drive, offering a special reduced fee for senior and adult cat...s. Edna was among 368 felines who found a loving forever home through the adoption drive I was looking for an older cat to adopt, because they deserve another chance in life, said Edna’s new mum, Tessa. She’s someone to talk to. She always comes in and says ‘hi’ in the morning. She’s so happy and follows us around. It warms our hearts that so many people have opted to adopt an older shelter pet in need of a second chance. Tessa knows too well the benefits of adopting a golden oldie With senior pets, they already have their own personality. Edna still acts like a kitten! 14.01.2022 Ajla recently visited our Cranbourne shelter to adopt a kitten. Little did she know, fate was about to work its wonders. As she walked through the adoptions centre, adult cat Mia meowed at her through her condo window, not once breaking eye contact She jumped right onto my chest and refused to go back. She knew she had me at her first meow, but wanted to make sure I couldn’t leave without her, said Ajla. 09.01.2022 It’s Senior Sunday! Polly, who is nearly 12 years old and deaf, found her retirement home after arriving at our shelter in January. When Mel and her daughter saw Polly’s photo, their hearts melted. She has such gentle and caring eyes, Mel said. Having been with her new family for just a week, Polly has already settled in perfectly. ... She has made herself at home and is getting lots of love from myself and my daughter, Mel said. Polly and her cuddly nature have filled the hole in Mel’s family that came after they lost their beloved pet. There’s nothing about her that we don’t love. Polly has quickly made our home feel full again, she said. Mel thinks senior pets have so much to bring to their new homes. Senior pets are wonderful because you just know they appreciate coming to their forever homes. They are more than happy to cuddle on the couch but still love going on adventure time and meeting people, she said. We couldn’t agree more!

05.01.2022 In our ‘Hearts of the Home’ series this week, we’d like you to meet our North Melbourne shelter supervisor, Amanda. Amanda has dedicated nearly 11 years of her life to The Lost Dogs’ Home, working as an adoptions nurse, vet nurse, cattery coordinator, and now shelter supervisor. It’s not only the Home’s animals who inspire Amanda it’s the staff and volunteers, too. The animals are clearly the biggest drawcard to working at LDH, but the people are a huge reason to stay. Ev...ery day I get to work alongside dedicated and caring people who have such compassion and kindness to animals in need, Amanda said. Supervising a shelter that cares for more than 10,000 animals each year comes with a lot of desk work, which is Amanda’s least favourite part of the role. I would rather have more time to be able to spend with the animals and the staff, she said. But, desk time is made more enjoyable thanks to the company of Amanda’s four-legged office companions. She takes part in our Office Foster Program, sharing her office with cats, kittens, dogs and puppies who are undergoing medical rehabilitation, working on building their confidence, or need some quiet time and TLC. At home, Amanda has fostered four puppies and adopted two dogs. Her staghound, Ned, was picked up by our Animal Ambulance when he was just a tiny puppy. Today, he’s a happy, healthy big boy with a big personality to match. If he could talk, Amanda thinks Ned would tell her, Come on! Let’s go to the park! Seeing Ned and thousands of other lost and abandoned animals find a loving forever home is one of Amanda’s favourite things about working in animal welfare.
