25.01.2022 Play is the BEST way to learn! __________________________ Credit: This quote was inspired by the 'I Am...' series of posters created by Playvolution HQ: https://playvolutionhq.com//origin/original-i-am-3-poster/
24.01.2022 "Many non-speaking Autistic people learn and understand language differently from speaking people. When speaking people put all of the responsibility onto the n...on-speaker for communicating in a way the speaking person understands, or they do not fully accommodate the non-verbal communication methods of the non-speaking person, it creates inequality in communication between the speaking person and the person who communicates non-verbally. When I don’t do well enough decoding speaking peoples language or translating my thoughts and vocabulary in a way the speaking person understands, or I do not type or sign quickly enough, I become invisible. I don’t get heard and I am not understood. Most of the time I am only able to decode and understand bits of what people say and then have to put the bits together and guess what they mean. This takes time. I find it extra difficult when speaking people don’t use the grammar I have learnt, have a very strong accent or pronounce words differently from what I was taught. These things make it more difficult because it takes away many of the clues I have learnt and rely on to decode what is said to me. When these differences in language and how a person communicates happen, and they are not accommodated by the speaking person, the conversation rushes ahead of me and I miss out on the opportunity to be an active part of it".
20.01.2022 PRINT THIS VISUAL GUIDE: HOUSEHOLD CHORES FOR GROWTH. ***Read below steps on HOW TO TEACH CHORES.*** Last week's OTTTT was about introducing chores to your k...ids, the first step for them to help out other people, develop a sense of responsibility and accountability, and becoming independent in performing life skills. Your usual chores-by-age guide just got the Growth OT Treatment! We didn't only group them by age, but also by category depending on the level of difficulty and the skill level needed to complete each chore. HOW TO TEACH CHORES: Introduce them to your kids gradually until it becomes part of their routine. 1. MODEL. Show them how it's done. Allow them to observe you and watch you do the chores. Bring them to the kitchen or the grocery store. Talk them through the steps. 2. ASSIST. Break the chore to smaller steps and allow them to do some parts of the chore. Gradually assign more steps to them until they can perform the entire chore. 3. GUIDE. Give verbal reminders to check on errors or missed steps and to refocus on the task when they get distracted. Give cues and tips on how to do a step better. Give praise and make the chore a family bonding experience. 4. ENCOURAGE INDEPENDENCE. Keep giving time and effort doing the chore with your child until you can incorporate the chore into their daily routine. Make bed right before they leave the bedroom. Pack away toys before they sleep. Water plants before they take a shower. **Watch our OTTTT about chores (link below!) and watch OTTTT #3 tonight at Growth with OT Cesar**

17.01.2022 Do you have a child who is a fussy eater? You are not alone for many parents mealtimes can feel more like a battleground than simply spending quality family t...ime together. Picky eating is a very common source of stress for parents and some believe it is just a phase their child will eventually grow out of. It is no surprise that this is not always the case and one in five parents will seek additional professional support for their child’s fussy eating. Feeding is a complex process to say the least and like all other areas of development, challenges can be experienced, and they may require professional support. Feeding is not always as simple as just eating up. Many factors come into play such as breathing, knowing how to chew and how to sit at the table. The child’s environment and their mealtime routines can impact their behaviour and eating success. Here at Melbourne Child Development we are excited to share our expertise and discuss common feeding myths and provide general strategies to support mealtime. We can help facilitate a safe and supportive eating environment. Occupational Therapist Taly Rink and Speech Pathologist Genevieve Ward will explain their role in assessment and therapy intervention. Both Clinicians are trained in SOS (sequential-oral-sensory) Approach to Feeding Training: Picky Eaters Vs Problem Feeders, from the United States. We welcome all parents and carers to this free webinar and look forward to helping families reduce mealtimes madness to include more munching. 13.01.2022 Who knew that cutting holes in a piece of paper could be so fun and very educational. A fold&cut theorem states that any shape with straight sides can be cut ou...t with a single cut if you fold a piece of paper the right way. So we started testing it. I asked Alex to make a square hole in the paper, and he made one with three cuts. Then I asked him to cut the same hole but cut only twice, and he made that happen too. Needless to say, he then found a way to cut a square hole with only one cut. After that, we started playing with other shapes too. The coolest thing was that we found a way to cut some letters too. "L" was a simple one. Some letters were tricky to find the solution. Anyway, I would like to challenge you to play with this theorem and share your cut-outs. This is a full family challenge, and I promise that everyone will have fun! #TheDadLab #boredinthehouse #togetherathome #kidscrafts See more

06.01.2022 How to make a flip visual schedule using a flippable base template that works for any visual schedule icons. First, print your visual schedule icons and the fre...e base template. Download the free flip visual schedule base here: bit.ly/MDCreslib Grab the visual schedule icons seen in the video here: bit.ly/MDCvisualschedules Then glue your visual schedule pieces in order onto the base (as shown in the video). Next you will laminate and cut out the base. Where you see the checkmarks, you will only cut those apart... DO NOT cut it all out. *please watch the video for this step if you are confused*. Last, add velcro to each flip and you're good to go!

03.01.2022 We all know that the start of this new school year is far from ordinary but unlike when remote learning/therapy began in March, we all have a lot more knowledge... about what works and what doesn't. I'm fortunate enough that I will be able to do a mix of in-person while and remote therapy this fall. While there are still so many unknowns as we start the new school year, I do know that there are strategies that can be put in place for successful zoom sessions. With the help of my wildy talented husband and daughter, we have created a poster that I will be distributing to all my families this year. If we all start off the year with clear expectations, therapy is going to be a huge success. #pediatricoccupationaltherapy #occupationaltherapy #remotetherapy #makelearningfun #distancelearning #focus #attention #organization #zoom #preschool #schoolage

02.01.2022 DYED SALT This play recipe is hands down the easiest and least expensive I’ve ever make . It makes the perfect sand like texture with the most beautiful col...ors . Salt trays are amazing for practicing pre-writing skills (the skills necessary to learn how to write). Kids don’t even realize they are learning. It’s just all fun and games . YOU ‘LL NEED: -Table salt -Food coloring -Zip close bag or container -Tray INSTRUCTIONS: 1Pour a bit of salt into a zip close bag. 2Add a few drops of food coloring to the bag. The more you add, the deeper the color will be. 4Remove all the air from the bag and close it well. 5Shake until all of the salt is evenly coated. 6Pour out the salt onto a tray and let it dry a few minutes. 7Shake the tray to make an even layer of salt and practice writing . You can skip the coloring part if you pour the salt over a colored tray. It will be just as fun and effective. #mothercould . . . #sensory #earlylearning #teachermom #toddler #learningthroughplay #messyplay #invitationtoplay #teachers #kidsactivities #preschool #preschoolready #toddlerfun #earlychildhoodeducation #homeschoolpreschool #homeschool #actividadesinfantiles #everydayplayhacks #playathome #montessoriathome #letthemplay #preschooler #earlyliteracy #babyplay #sensoryplay #etkinlik #aktivite #montessori See more
