25.01.2022 The hippocampus is a complex brain structure embedded deep in the temporal lobe. It has a major role in learning and memory. It’s plasticity allows for positive... neurological changes but also makes it vulnerable to things such as stress. Three simple ways to improve hippocampal health include: 1. Physical exercise, which stimulates neurogenesis and promotes positive plasticity. 2. Stress management to reduce the neurotoxic effects of cortisol on the hippocampus. 3. Mental exercisessuch as memorizing a poem or a list of words or numbers, reading, writing, or retrieving vocabularyall activate the hippocampus. #memory #brain

24.01.2022 I’ve been practicing + teaching reparenting for years. It’s a foundational part of our healing journey. I took these pillars from my upcoming book, How To Do T...he Work. Many of us are children in adult bodies (myself included.) We haven’t been taught how to meet our needs, place boundaries, or engage in self care. Our work is to learn the things we weren’t modeled. Our work is to become our own best parent. Emotional regulation: is the ability to process emotions in a healthy ways. This allows us to be resilient + flexible. Emotional regulation requires us to focus on daily practices like breathwork, mindbody movement, grounding, + meditation to allow our nervous system to regulate, then process stressful emotional states. Self care is often seen as indulgence: True self care is learning what your needs are in the present moment while practicing new ways to meet those needs. It can be as simple as remembering to drink water throughout the day. Or having one home cooked meal. Every time we choose to honor our needs, we honor the inner child who’s needs weren’t always met. Loving discipline is the practice of forming new habits + promises: It’s showing up for self, which restores self trust. When we cannot trust our word for ourselves (because we’ve betrayed ourselves in the past) we have low self worth. Childlike play + wonder: most adults have lost this inner connection. This looks like creating, being spontaneous, finding joy in the present moment, + channeling imagination #selfhealers

24.01.2022 Right now, we’re all facing the same storm, but we’re all doing so in different boats Some have yachts, others are in tinnies. Some have a substantial crew on ...board, others are rowing alone. Some have life jackets (higher resilience, stronger relationships, more optimism, use their strengths and more positivity), others don’t even have a working rudder... I have been using this boat analogy a lot this week (after hearing it from @janewundersitz) to explain why some people are handling the current crisis better than others.. We are not all in the same boat. We are all in the same storm. That summation of our current situation originally came from Damian Barr (the illustration is by Barbara Kelley), who suggested that some of us will sail through this pandemic with our health and jobs intact, yet others will lose one or both, or potentially more. So if you’re wondering why others are fairing better or worse than you at the moment, perhaps it’s worth considering what type of boat they are in.

23.01.2022 Anxiety comes from a brain that has been hauled into the future. Brains will always feel safest in the present, because right now, right here, you are safe. Gro...unding is a strategy that can calm an anxious brain by bringing it back to the now. Try it first with your kiddos when they are calm, such as before bedtime or on the way to school. Then, introduce it as a strategy they can add to their bravery toolbox. See more

23.01.2022 Sandplay therapy is suitable for children, adolescents and adults. Originally established by psychologist Dora Kalff in the 1940s, it combined several philosophies and techniques and has developed further over the years. By using a sand tray we can begin to understand the world we have created and our own inner world. Figures and objects become symbols when words are either limited or unavailable. When we chose, hold and then place these symbols we are expressing our thou...ghts, concerns and finding meaning, wisdom and healing in a safe space. Sandplay is just one therapeutic intervention that I offer and is available with me on Fridays at Castieau Consultancy See more

17.01.2022 2020 has certainly been a challenging, difficult and stressful year for many of us. There has been ups and downs, highlights and sadness. In some ways, life has changed and the uncertainty of this can feel overwhelming at times. In many sessions this year we have spoken about the importance of self-care and also acknowledging how 2020 may have impacted us, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and financially. Giving space for the grief, anger or sadness that has co...me from this has been vital. With the holiday season fast approaching I have put together a few ideas that focuses on supporting ourselves over the next few weeks based on Dr John Arden's planting SEEDS. S - social connectivity. Social relationships benefit our immune system and mental health. Reach out to people who support you as much as possible. E - exercise. Our brains can feel bogged down when we don't exercise. It is a great anti-depressant and anti-anxiety support. E - education. Learn something new, do a crossword puzzle, teach yourself how to knit, take a new way to work. Our brains love new things! D - diet. Try to keep stay light and balanced as much as possible. Drink lots of water to keep hydrated. S - sleep. Good sleep practices are essential for mental health. Try to maintain good quality sleep. I will be taking a short break to rest and recharge and also plan some exciting trainings for 2021. I will be back working at Integro Health in Eaton on Monday and Wednesdays https://integrohealth.com.au/ On Friday's I will be working at Castieau Consultancy https://www.castieauconsultancy.com/ I look forward to catching up in 2021. Kellie
