19.01.2022 For someone who has worked as a milliner for over 30 years, I have a relatively small block collection. I have some basic shapes I use regularly, but often sculpt the shape I want using the right materials, steam and wire. I do this as I find the creative process very rewarding and like the idea of creating shapes that are unique to my label. If you have done any of my @hatacademy courses, you will have been introduced to some of these techniques. It’s always exciting when I see students use these new skills to create their own unique designs. 16.01.2022 Recently featured in the National Gallery of Victoria’s November newsletter, Miss Moneypenny was purchased in 2008 and exhibited in their 200 years of Australian Fashion exhibition in 2016. The patent braid used in this hat was purchased from an iconic Melbourne fabric shop, that no longer exists; Job Warehouse. I went down dark torch lit corridors lined with pigeon poo and climbed a mountain of cascading boxes in the dark to get this braid! Seriously! She created her tip and sideband shape by hand, with just a simple dome block for the headfitting. I love the black and orange Buntal mat she chose from @b_unique_millinery . They have made felt fedoras, a felt riding hat , a straw cap,, a buckram covered silk period hat which included drafting the pattern,hat pattern, a straw fedora and a ribbon halo. . The next Thursday Millinery course commences on April 15th. It takes place in my sunny Melbourne studio with Vic Gov COVID safety plan in place. 02.01.2022 Repost from @brineydeep4 using @RepostRegramApp - My ribbon beret! I learned this technique in a lovely class with @louisemacdonaldmilliner. I was the only non-milliner in the class and she helped me keep up despite issues with my glue (dried up) and my ribbon (wrong width and fiber). My petersham ribbons (third picture) did eventually arrive today the day after the workshop of course. At least I can use them for future ribbon berets. Now I just need somewhere to wear my new hat. Maybe a Zoom meeting?
