23.01.2022 Please be aware of some new hoax emails doing the rounds this week as they appear to be from the major banks advising of new website details. There are links in the email and also discussion about how to log in to your account and what to do if you’re having problems logging in with your username and password. All major banks have information on their websites alerting their customers to these scams. Do not use the links in these emails and enter your account details as you will inadvertently be giving your banking details to a thief. Should you have any concerns this has occurred already I would strongly encourage you to contact your bank and follow their instructions.

20.01.2022 CONFIDENTIALITY Did you know that many of the businesses and organisations that you share your private information with are governed by rules of confidentiality and the National Privacy Principles? Banks, Credit Unions, hospitals, medical services, schools and your local solicitor all have to comply with industry codes for confidentiality and privacy. Just because we live in a small town does not mean these rules don't apply. For example, if you provide personal information t...o your local Credit Union, under the Credit Union Code of Practice they MUST NOT disclose the information to any other party or body (unless required by law) without your consent to do this. If they do it is a breach. These misuses of private information should be reported. There are rules about how they are to be reported. The general rule is that you must first make a complaint to the body that disclosed your personal information. If that does not resolve the issue there are watchdog bodies that will deal with the complaint. If you have had your personal and private information disclosed outside the purpose you disclosed it for then take action - report it. If you need assistance with how to handle a complaint please call our office for assistance. 40698258 See more

19.01.2022 Beware of investment Advisors It is very common for mining towns such as ours to be the target of investment advisors or "investment groups" hoping to get people to sign up to their deals. There is the perception out there that everyone that lives in a mining town is wealthy with heaps of disposable income to splash around. This is not the case at all and given the regular uncertainty in the mining industy we need to be more careful than ever how we invest our money. So what ...should we watch out for? 1. Free services Free services are never free - someone is always getting a cut somewhere. Any investment service that hides its fee should be avoided. And do not doubt there is a fee or a commission being paid somewhere - these are businesses not charities - nothing is for free. If you are asked to "sign up" or "purchase" something including insurance services you can bet that a commission is being paid. For some famlies it may be more economical to pay for an appointment with an accountant for some advice that is tailored to your individual needs - there is no such thing as one size fits all. 2. If it seems too good to be true it is Fantastic investment returns, guaranteed occupancy rates and low fees are a fabrication. There is no way to get rich quick without exceptionally high risk. The detail is all in the fine print. Make sure you check it. 3. Sign up now - wont last long The big push to get you to sign up should be another warning. Do not pay any deposit, or sign any document that you are uncertain about. The people from these companies don't live here. They don't have to push their trolley through Woollies with us each week. This means they vanish and are not here to answer questions or take any critcism if it is earned. 4. Everyone gets a cut These businesses make it so simple. You sign up for an investment property. They have the land mapped out, the builder lined up, the lawyer to do the transaction, the surveyor to do the depreciation schedule and the accountant to do your tax. Do not be mistaken that every one of these gets a cut - and the company arranging it gets a commission from each for signing you up - this is not independent advice!!! and it often costs you more than if you engaged each one yourself - remember you pay for convenience. You can check for unreputable companies using this link https://www.moneysmart.gov.au//companies-you-should-not-de Just because a company is not listed doesn't mean its good - it just means it possibly hasn't been caught yet. Further information can be found at: https://www.moneysmart.gov.au/investing If you have questions or need a proposed investment contract examined please call our office on 40698258.

17.01.2022 DOG OWNERS There has been a lot of attention lately on dog ownership and the issue of infringement notices. The Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 and the Regulations (2009) are intended to:... (a) provide for the identification of cats and dogs; and (b) provide for the registration of dogs; and (c) provide for the effective management of regulated dogs; and (d) promote the responsible ownership of cats and dogs. No one argues with responsible animal ownership. There are however strict rules about how these matters can be dealt with. If you are uncertain about an event please call our office and make an appointment for legal advice. Louise is experienced in this area as a current sessional member for the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal she has conducted hearings regarding these matters for the last 5 years. 16.01.2022 DRINK DRIVING OFFENCES I have been involved in some discussions lately regarding drink driving charges. Under certain circumstances some people charged with these offences may be eligible to apply for a restricted licence (work licence). In order to apply for a restricted licence you must obtain an affidavit from your employer confirming your employment, stating that you require a licence for your job and that you will be dismissed without a licence. For whatever reasons, I h...ave been advised that RTA Weipa will not sign these affidavits for their employees. The current Magistrate WILL NOT grant an application for a restricted licence without this affidavit. This position means that RTA employees run a huge risk driving while under the influence. Don't risk it - walk or catch a taxi. And if the worst happens and you are charged come in and see us for advice immediately before you talk to anyone else - now more than ever it is important that you give yourself the best chance at the best possible outcome - your job depends on it. 12.01.2022 There has been some interesting activity in town of late regarding dogs transported in the back of a utility. Please see the information below regarding how to do this properly. Please note the recommendation is that a cage is the best and safest method - you DO NOT need to further tie or restrain your dog whilst it is in a cage. Unfortunately there has been some confusion surrounding this and some incorrect statements made. If you are unsure of where you stand don't hesitate to call our office for assistance. https://www.business.qld.gov.au//an/transporting-dogs-utes
