21.01.2022 Barefoot training Yes or No? Personally I’m in the camp. Firstly because I’ve always had problems finding shoes that actually fit due to having wide feet. Secondly because the human body is way more intelligent than shoe companies. . . .... . . . Barefoot training is increasing in popularity and with good reason. Feet are very complex pieces of kit. With 28 bones, 30 joints and over 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments there’s a lot going on there. They come in all different shapes and sizes and are being squashed in a pair of trainers will do you no favours. There is also no need to correct your arches, or amount of pronation or whatever else we have been led to believe by clever marketing. You walk the way you walk and you run the way you run. I refer back to my earlier point about the human body being more intelligent than well all of us. We have our own shock absorbers in the form of skeletal muscles A clever warning system to tell us when we’re in danger of injuring ourselves know as proprioception Thanks ligaments. Bones are hard and will stay that way if they’re exposed to load a regular basis. They will also become even stronger if the loads are increased (GRADUALLY) If the foot or any part of the anatomy has interference from outside forces it will become dysfunctional and lead to weakness, poor mechanics and reduced proprioception. I CANNOT stress the importance of proprioception enough. I’m not saying we should throw out all our shoes and wander the streets with naked feet. I am a girl after all and I do enjoy a beautiful piece of footwear especially with with a pretty handbag In the gym you will see me without shoes and socks If you can’t perform barefoot it’s because of faulty mechanics in the foot and ankle which leads to problems all the way up the chain. No shoe on earth can correct that.
