19.01.2022 ~ Self care Gosh we are hearing that a lot lately aren’t we? And for good reason really. It’s been a bit of a shit show here in Melbourne. Lockdown was hard and for me, it unfortunately allowed me a lot more time to be in my head, which if I’m honest, sometimes is not such a great place to be. So what does self care mean?... It means deliberately doing whatever is best for you, and whatever you need to do in order to take care of your own mental, emotional and physical health. It helps you be the best version of you so that you can show up for the people and things in life that you love. You cant run on empty and self care helps you replenish. It’s personal and it should be done whenever you need. Do it unashamedly, unapologetically and without the feeling of needing to explain. But what does self care look like? This is the best bit.it can be anything you want! Anything that serves you well. Dance around your lounge. Go for a walk in nature. Cook a meal you love. Have a bath while listening to your favourite podcast. Get crafty, make something. Put your face up to the sunshine. Watch a favourite TV show or movie. Read. Talk to a loved one. Chat to your dog and watch the head tilts Set boundaries. Say no. Take deep breaths (it really is a good practice to get in to). Let go. It’s the soft tissue component of the connective tissue system and is a very adaptable structure What does it do? It wraps around all muscles and organs and runs throughout the whole body holding everything in place What does it look like? Think of the segments of an orange. The fine fibre that holds the segments and all those juice filled pockets together is just like fascia! In yin yoga we hold poses for minutes rather than moments. In doing this we are applying stress to the targeted fascial area and fascia responds best to a slow and steady load. 05.01.2022 Upward-Facing Dog ~ Urdhva Mukha Svanasana It’s one of the most common yoga poses, which makes getting it right super important ... It’s a pretty powerful pose that uses upper-body strength, engages leg muscles, and gives a juicy stretch through the chest down to the abdomen It’s common in vinyasa flows and therefore important to get right to prevent injury One of the challenges is to keep the shoulders from bunching up toward the ears. When you do this you collapse the chest, drop weight into the wrists and potentially put pressure onto your lower back. Instead, you should be pressing through into the hands to give good support and lift to your body Another challenge is engaging and lifting the legs off the mat. If you don’t press into the mat with the tops of your feet and engage your quad muscles, the lower body and knees drop and rest on the mat. This again can put pressure on your lower back Some modifications to help you safely work on the pose are to use blocks under your hands. This will help give you lift and encourage the shoulders away from your ears. You can also keep your toes tucked as this again helps with lift and elevation. Both are especially handy while you are working building arm and leg strength Have a play with this little dog. Just remember take it slow, go gently, engage the right muscles, don’t be afraid to use props and have fun!
