As kids physios we are all about empowering parents, fostering connection and joy in play, and really establishing a love of physical activity from day one. This is a wonderful resource for all the parents and carers out there! We love sharing all ...the tips and tricks for helping your little one develop their motor skills. 25.01.2022 Do you sometimes find yourself comparing your little one to the other kids at play group/daycare/pre-school? Don’t worry, we’ve all been there and it seems to create a unique brand of stress for parents no matter what age your little one is. The important thing to remember is that developmental milestones describe a normal range with often wide variability (swipe to see WHO windows of gross motor attainment). Our little people are unique individuals with all sorts of factors... influencing their development including genetics, personality and their social environment. Take Sam’s kiddies achieving rolling for example (see our Instagram post for videos). Mr A was an energetic 3 month old who would roll under the couch if you looked away for too long. Miss R was a very healthy 6 month old who was much more interested in smiling and socialising than rolling there’s no comparing them! Two very different little people in the normal range. In saying all of this, parents gut instincts are key so if you have any concerns about your little one’s development or would just like an expert to cast an eye over them speak to your GP or book in to see us #lucindakidsphysio #paedsphysiotherapy #raisinghealthychildren #newcastlepaediatrics #paeds #darbystreet

23.01.2022 It’s world physiotherapy day! Every year on September 8 we celebrate world physiotherapist day, a global event recognising the important and trusted role physio’s play in the community. Many people don’t realise that physiotherapists see children, but we are passionate about seeing children of all ages and addressing any concerns you may have! . . . .... . . . . #worldphysiotherapyday2020 #lucindakidsphysio #kidsphysio #kidsphysio #newcastlepaediatrics See more

22.01.2022 My turn! My name is Elke and this is my gorgeous daughter (now 7). Unlike Sam’s kids, she likes nothing more than to strike a pose for a photo! We love heading outdoors to go adventuring, whether it be the beach, bush walking or going bike riding. I love working with babies, children and their families to live their best possible lives and watch them achieve their goals! . .... . . . #lucindakidsphysio #kidsphysio #physiotherapy #paediatrics #newcastlepaediatrics #physio See more

17.01.2022 Now that the weather is warming up, it’s time to get outside for some outdoor play!! Not only is it good fun, but it’s great for your child’s physical health, development and self confidence. When playing outside, your child has more space for big movements like running, jumping, kicking and throwing. Outdoor play doesn’t have to be structured at all. Make time to run in the backyard, visit a local park or beach, or just let your child help you with the jobs in the garden! . .... . . . #lucindakidsphysio #kidsphysio #paedsphysio #newcastlepaediatrics #playoutdoors #outdoorplay #spring See more

15.01.2022 This little legend has been working hard on her hip strength and flexibility over the past few weeks Today we thought we’d change it up with some hand-eye coordination games in the park. What a day for it!! We hope you’re enjoying that warm breeze (maybe more like a warm gale ) today too! . .... . . . #lucindakidsphysio #kidsphysio #paedsphysio #physiotherapy #newcastlepaediatrics #coordinationtraining #spring See more

15.01.2022 WHAT a smile This adorable little lady was diagnosed with Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) when she was one week old. Both of her hips were found to be dislocatable on her newborn hip check. DDH is a condition that affects 1-2 in every 1000 babies. It’s more common in girls, firstborn children, babies carried and born in the breech position (bottom first) and in families with a history of DDH. Treatment aims to place the hips in the most ideal position (wide froggy... position ) to allow the hip joint and surrounding tissues to develop and mature. The exact type of treatment required depends on the severity of the condition and the age of diagnosis. Because DDH can develop in the weeks and months after birth it’s important to keep checking hips at health appointments over the first 12 months. Remember to keep the legs loose if you wrap your baby so the hips and knees can bend up and out into that beautiful froggy position . . . . . . . #lucindakidsphysio #kidsphysio #physiotherapy #paediatrics #newcastlephysio #ddh #hipdysplasia #hipcheck #hipdysplasiaawareness #hipdysplasiababy #developmentalplay

But before we jump into some fun physio info we should introduce ourselves... My name is Sam and my kids (nearly 4 and nearly 2) hate posing for photos! No photos! has become their team motto I get a little too competitive at social basketball and wish I could get to yoga a little more often I love working with kids and their families. ...From listening with a sympathetic ear to the sleep deprived new parents to watching the big kids achieve their goals, it’s so rewarding Elke’s turn next... . . . . . #lucindakidsphysio #kidsphysio #physiotherapy #paediatrics #newcastlepaediatrics #evidencebasedpractice #physio

08.01.2022 You wouldn’t believe how beneficial it is for your little one to climb! The physical benefits come straight to mind. Climbing is a whole body activity that works arms, legs and core and over time builds strength, endurance and flexibility. But wait, that’s not all... Climbing requires significant hand, feet and eye coordination. In order to achieve their goal kids need to look, plan and coordinate their bodies to reach their chosen spot... Climbing builds confidence and self-esteem as they overcome challenges and achieve little goals Enhances problem solving, planning, risk assessment and decision making skills. It requires focus and concentration from your little one. Provides a mindful activity that helps relieve stress Not to mention the allllll the benefits of supporting your little one in risk based play but that’s a topic worthy of its own space Happy climbing! . . . . . . #lucindakidsphysio #kidsphysio #paedsphysio #paedsphysiotherapy #physio #physiotherapy #newcastlepaediatrics #climbing #treeclimbing #rockclimbing #climbingframes #alltheclimbing

07.01.2022 Did you know that we need to protect these gorgeous little heads? (Throwback pic to Sam’s eldest in a classic baby pose ) Plagiocephaly is a common craniofacial (skull and face) problem that describes a misshapen, flat or asymmetrical head shape (swipe for an example). Why does this happen? Because newborn skull bones are soft, thin and flexible so that they can grow and change shape easily. Flattening can happen when bubs spend lots of time on their backs, not only sl...eeping but also in car seats, capsules, prams, baby swings and bouncer seats. Since the introduction of the Back to Sleep campaign in 1992 plagiocephaly has been on the rise and current prevalence is estimated at around 22% at 7 weeks of age. It’s important to place your baby on their backs to sleep from birth to reduce the incidence of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) and we need to talk about how we can protect our kids head shapes from the get go! Luckily for us the Ministry of Health has recently released a shiny new guideline full of the most current evidence based recommendations to guide best management and reduce the incidence So what can you do? Sleep time: ensure you place your bub on their back to sleep but you can alternate their head position and the end of the cot/bassinet that you place them in. Play time: when your bub is awake and supervised it’s important to spend time on tummies and in sidelying play (more to come on that later!) Carrying, holding and feeding: alternate alternate! We often get very comfortable doing things on our stronger side but it’s important to vary positions to allow bubs to practice turning their heads to both sides. If you’ve noticed that your little one seems to have a preference to look one way compared to the other or you’re worried about their head shape we’re here to help! . . . . . #lucindakidsphysio #kidsphysio #paedsphysio #physiotherapy #newcastlepaediatrics #plagiocephaly #plagio

07.01.2022 It’s amazing how true the old quote is about the days being long but the years being short! 02.01.2022 Wheeling & Able are an incredible local charity who provide financial support to families and children with physical disabilities. We are so grateful to contribute to their amazing work and excited to have made our first donation Thank you so much to all of our wonderful new clients for your contribution and to our family and friends who have been spreading the word about Lucinda Kids Physio!

01.01.2022 Tummy time. In their first year of life, babies learn to lift their heads, roll over, sit, crawl and stand. Tummy time helps babies strengthen the neck and upper body muscles that they need to hold their head up and move around. This is a building block to build the strength they need for crawling and pulling to stand when they are older.... If your baby doesn’t like tummy time on the floor, try tummy time on your chest, on your lap or over a rolled up towel. Start tummy time soon after birth for 1-2 minutes a few times a day. . . . . . #lucindakidsphysio #kidsphysio #physiotherapy #newcastlephysio #paediatrics #developmentalplay #tummytime #tummyplay #babydevelopment

01.01.2022 This Christmas we want to #Sockit2CF These special socks are helping to raise awareness and funds for all the babies, children, adults and families living with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Did you know that 1 in 25 Australians are carriers of the cystic fibrosis gene? That’s more than a million people!... CF causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the body which affects the lungs and digestive system. Some common symptoms include trouble digesting food, difficulty breathing, persistent cough and vulnerability to cold and flu. There’s currently no cure and CF never stops. People living with CF require treatment everyday including medications and Physiotherapy to help clear their lungs. But there have been exciting advancements in treatment in recent years and each pair of socks will be helping to raise funds for critical research to help find a cure! You can grab your own pair of red socks or donate today at www.sockit2cf.com.au #Sockit2cF #cysticfibrosis #lucindakidsphysio #physiotherapy #paedsphysio #kidsphysiotherapy #newcastlepaeds

01.01.2022 Merry Christmas!! What a tricky year it has been and continues to be for many families around Australia and the world. We took a leap this year in opening Lucinda Kids Physio in the middle of a global pandemic but we needn’t have worried; Newcastle is truly an incredible place of community and solidarity and we can’t thank you all enough for your support and kindness over the past six months. We have loved getting to know the children and families who have come through ou...r doors and we hope everyone has a chance to stop, connect, relax and have fun over this holiday period. We have big plans for 2021 in our new space (see our website for details) and we will continue to work hard to provide the very best family centred care that we can . . . . . #lucindakidsphysio #kidsphysio #physiotherapy #paedsphysio #newcastlekids #newcastlepaediatrics #merrychristmas #happynewyear
