25.01.2022 This is your mid-week reminder to stop and take a breath. Give yourself permission to be mindful and in the moment....our Lumineers are becoming experts at this!
24.01.2022 Check this out! Today we kicked off our external sport program, with our Nest children rolling down to the Newport skatepark for their very first skateboarding lesson with the awesome team from Rampfest Indoor Skatepark! Our Lumineers showed their trademark resilience and determination when trying to master new skills today. ... We even overheard one child saying "I've just got to do this trick 5 times by myself, so that I can nail it!" We love that our Lumineers set themselves goals and challenges to push themselves to grow as learners and human beings. We also can't wait to see how their skills progress over the rest of the term....stay tuned for more gnarly pics and tricks!
24.01.2022 The Forest children are well underway with the designing and making of their projects! As part of their Learning Exploration this term, our 4/5/6 children are creating solutions to create more inclusive environments for neurodiverse individuals in our community. One Design Team identified that cafes and restaurants can often be a source of sensory overload for these individuals, and have decided to make sensory packs that can be used to alleviate feelings of stress or overwhe...lm when visiting. Last week they visited potential audiences such as Cafe Cirino, Williamstown Crepes and Tik Tok Cafe. Children introduced their project, explained why it was important, and asked questions to learn more about what each business might need from a sensory pack. They received some excellent feedback, and will use this to create relevant design goals for their sensory packs! We can't wait to see what they create to make our local cafe scene more inclusive and enjoyable for everyone in our community.
23.01.2022 Each week our littlest Lumineers have workshops with our artist in residence, Zory. This week the children experimented with using symbols to tell stories through art, and explored how to make paint using natural pigments. A natural pigment is one that is found in nature that is ground, sifted, washed, and in rarer cases, heated to create a desired hue. Since their inception, natural pigments served many artistic purposes for ancient cultures around the world. The first paintings, from prehistoric times, were cave paintings applied by brushing, smearing, dabbing, and even spraying techniques. The children loved painting with the pigments and exploring this new artistic material. We can't wait to see them use all the amazing skills they are developing to tell their own stories!
21.01.2022 Have you ever used a mood tracker? Our Nest children are investigating how our habits and behaviours influence our emotions and mood as part of their Learning Exploration. They have been collecting data about how they are feeling at different points throughout each day. It has been fascinating to analyse this data, and we are beginning to notice patterns in our moods and emotions across the weeks.... The children will use this data to help them identify their habits and behaviours that are causing big emotions (like anger, sadness or fear), so that we can begin to develop strategies to manage these emotions throughout the day.
19.01.2022 As part of our investigation into the art of storytelling, Lumineer recently took part in the First Nations Bedtime Stories Challenge. First Nations cultures on this continent make up the oldest continuous cultures in the world. They go back over 80,000 years, and hold incredible knowledge and wisdom passed down through thousands of generations. We took part in this challenge so that we could begin to bridge our knowledge gap about First Nation cultures, and celebrate First... Nations people and their stories. Children watched a selection of Dreaming stories over the week, told to us by First Nations elders and knowledge custodians from Central Australia. We learnt about the importance of language, and the connection between Country, place and people. As part of their learning, children in the Nest particularly enjoyed using the 50 Words project to find out more about Australian Indigenous Languages. https://50words.online/

13.01.2022 Game, set, match...Our littlest Lumineers were super excited to hit the courts again last week! We are so lucky to have the Liston Tennis Club - Williamstown across the road to teach us some seriously cool tennis skills.
12.01.2022 Have you ever wondered how tall you are in paddle pop sticks or blocks? Our littlest Lumineers have been busy investigating length by using informal units of measurement! They enjoyed making estimations and then checking these with their careful measuring skills.
11.01.2022 Join our next tour! We're a local primary school that's different. We nurture our kids to be curious, we support learning from failure, we cultivate compassion. And that's just the start. Book here - lumineer.edu.au/visit-us
11.01.2022 There have been activators aplenty in the Forest since we've been back on campus! Our Lumineers have been busy connecting with a range of storytelling experts via Zoom to deepen their understanding of how different modes of storytelling can reach diverse audiences and share diverse messages. First up was Jane Casson. Jane works for City Adult Ballet and uses movement as a mode of storytelling. The children were fascinated to learn that dancers use certain movements to repre...sent language features whilst dancing to help them tell impactful and meaningful stories. The children were certainly feeling inspired after learning that dancers use carefully considered movements in order to convey a message to an audience, without using any words at all. The Forest was also joined by the fabulous Meshel Laurie who spoke about her experiences as a storyteller. Meshel is a TV and radio broadcaster who shares stories through comedy, blogs, columns and podcasting. She had lots of great anecdotes and tips to share, and the children were deeply engaged as they learnt about how to use storytelling to surprise and delight an audience. We are so excited to see how the children begin to experiment with applying these new skills and ideas to tell their own stories.
10.01.2022 We're back! We had a lot of fun learning remotely, but we had even MORE fun this week during our return to campus! We are so happy to be back in our beautiful learning studios and outdoor spaces, and we are all feeling refreshed and energised ready to take on Term Four. This week we've been busy reconnecting, collaborating, designing, building, playing, laughing and of course...dancing. ... Seeing our Lumineers jump right back into their learning definitely brought a smile to all of our faces this week, and we think it will do the same for you.
08.01.2022 Our opt-in workshop afternoons are gathering steam at Lumineer! In the Early Years studios, children have been exploring storytelling through play, working with our artist in residence, and utilising our STEM resources to develop their coding skills. We are seeing and experiencing so much joy as the children engage in the workshops that interest them most. Recently our Year Six children have also been designing and implementing skill-based workshops for our F-2 children to p...articipate in. These workshops have included storytelling through movement, drawing, and even throwing skills! This has been a great opportunity for our Year Six leaders to form positive relationships with our littlest Lumineers, and has provided them with a chance to reflect on the implementation of their workshops and iterate to make improvements...just like our educators do! 08.01.2022 Just out here, living our best lives at Lumineer. Being active, being connected, learning new skills and of course...having lots of fun.
08.01.2022 We work on our literacy goals in many different ways. Our little Lumineers love practising new letters, words and sounds with sensory activities like salt trays, painting and playdough!
05.01.2022 Ahoy! Our intrepid Lumineers have once again taken to the high seas of Port Phillip Bay to hoist the sails and grow their sailing skills. During sailing sessions, children learn how to set up and launch their boats safely, how to navigate, and how to control the sails...it is quite impressive to watch! ... We find that sailing is a great way to help our children develop their character, requiring them to be determined, resilient and brave. It is also a whole lot of fun, and a great way to see our beautiful city.
03.01.2022 Last week to celebrate NAIDOC week, our Early Years children were very excited to be joined by Kamilaroi/Dunghutti woman Marlee Silva who is a podcast host, author and founder of Indigenous Female Empowerment campaign Tiddas 4 Tiddas. Marlee spoke with the children about the importance of storytelling in Aboriginal culture and shared some of her favourite stories. The children asked questions and learned how to say Yaama, which means hello. To continue our learning we read s...tories, including the Rainbow Serpent and drew some of our own. Children also enjoyed learning a Djirri Djirri dance through an ACMI workshop. Djirri Djirri means Willy Wagtail in Woiwurrung. #NAIDOC2020
01.01.2022 Chess is a big deal at Lumineer. Such a big deal in fact, that we have a lunch-time elective dedicated to learning new strategies and moves. Children from Foundation to Year Six come together during this time to learn from each other, and practice playing one of the greatest strategy games on Earth. Even those who are just starting out are welcome to join, with our more confident players taking the opportunity to show them the ropes.... We get great joy out of watching our Lumineers play with such patience and kindness, but we are slightly scared to take them on in a chess battle - they have some serious skills!!!
