25.01.2022 The climb is always worth the gratification. A 5-hour reflective round trip hiking to the Tigers Nest, a monastery which clings to the mountains in the Paro Valley, Bhutan, took me on a path of self-discovery. I consider myself fairly fit, but as I reached the top, older, Bhutanese ladies bounced past like long distance runners as I slowly clambered up the steep hills. When I reached the final leg, of which there are about 2,000 steps (round trip) I had to dig deep into th...e I-can-do-it basket, knowing what goes up, must come down! On entering the cool walls of the monastery, I could feel the spiritual pull of the land, its history, and its independent strength. Every step was worth it, and given the chance, Id do it all over again. 24.01.2022 A wonderful privilege photographing our First Australians this week, with the participants of Miss NAIDOC 2020 . This is Taylor-Jane, and here is her story. My name is Taylor-Jane Bellotti; I am a proud Yamatji woman and mother of two with connections to the Malgana and Kija language groups. I was born in Perth and moved between Broome and Carnarvon for the first few years of my life, before settling in Perth. As I grew up in Perth and off country, I have great respect f...or the Noongar language group but have always felt a little lost. I believe that I am not as connected to my culture as I would like to explore this side of my identity, more as I mature. I remember times, when I was younger, going to Shark Bay with the family and going out net fishing or just throwing a line off the rocks. I found these moments to be very healing, and I still long to return to country. Growing up in the city, I have been on the go and trying to find my place in the world. As such, I have been able to achieve things that I didn’t believe were possible for a young Aboriginal woman. Being told I would never succeed in life and that I would end up another statistic. However, I was able to defy the odds and graduate year 12, complete a Vet Nursing degree, during which I was awarded Polytechnic West Aboriginal student of the year and runner up in the state. Somehow, still, I didn’t feel as though I was doing enough to help my community, and it was there that I decided to enrol in University. 23.01.2022 Fresh off the digital press, here's a story I wrote slowly, over a period of several months. Nyinyikay Homeland in East Arnhem Land is a spiritual destination for many people. Its land and its people seep into your soul when you're not expecting it, and so it seemed fitting to write about it in a 'slow-cooker' way to allow its flavours to mesh together. All being well, I'll be returning in 2021 to further learn about the cultural layers of the Yolngu people. <3

A complete success during a roller coaster year where travel and photography have been mainly reduced to online Zoom sessions and webinars. Instead, with Australia's borders tightly closed I looked closer to home for an injection of Asian culture. East Arnhem Land in Australia's Top End is one, and Bhutan, a land circumnavigated by the Himalayas like prayer wheels on a temple, is another. 15.01.2022 I photographed this monk lighting candles in one of Bhutan's most interesting temples, Chimi Lhakhang. Sitting proudly on top of a mountain, and smaller than most Bhutanese temples, this one offers hope for childless couples. Women travel far and wide, and from overseas, to reach these sacred walls. During a fertility blessing they carry a large wooden phallus as they circumnavigate the temple muttering mantras in the hope they'll conceive. It's a special sight, witnessing ...something deeply spiritual. 13.01.2022 At the entrance to Punakha Dzong sits an elderly Bhutanese gentleman. He visits daily, where, after he circumnavigates the prayer wheel, spinning it twice, the guards place a chair for him. He spends some time turning the wheel and praying, occasionally stopping to look into the light. I watched him, wondering what his thoughts were, and if he was in deep meditation and at peace with the world. His eyes sparkled, full of a life well lived. 12.01.2022 Meet Indigenous activist, Herbert Bropho. Herbert had arranged a smoking ceremony near Kings Park to attract attention from the local government to stop bridge construction to Heirisson Island, Aboriginal native land in Perth. Friendly, informative and engaging we had quite the chat about worldly matters. He's a solid soul, and assists the homeless on a regular basis. 11.01.2022 A wonderful privilege photographing our First Australians this week, with participants of Miss NAIDOC 2020.This is the lovely and talented, Runner-Up, Tamika Ponton. Here is her story: I am a 30-year-old, proud Ballardong Noongar woman from Goomalling, with ties to Whadjuk and Yued country. I grew up in Perth, and am one of five children. Family is an important part of my life. My mother is an amazing non-Aboriginal woman who has supported and embraced Aboriginal cultu...re and helped build me into a strong, proud Aboriginal woman. My dad has always ensured that I know who I am, where I came from and made sure that I have a strong connection to family, country and culture. Being an Aboriginal woman is the core of who I am, it is my strength and my resilience, it is something that no one can take away. I am currently in my final year of medicine at the University of Western Australia and am due to graduate in December. Through university outreach programs and the Follow the Dream program, I realised that studying medicine was a possibility and something I could actually do. But my journey into medicine, and where I am now hasn’t been an easy one. As I started studying medicine my passion for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health amplified, and I realised that this was all I wanted to do. However, I was young when I first started, straight from high school and I wasn’t as studious as I needed to be. This combined with a lot of other things that were happening in my life made me realise it just wasn’t the right time to study medicine. I deferred my medical degree and began to study nursing, as I loved health and wanted make a difference. I started working as a nurse and my passion for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health got stronger and I wanted to achieve so much more. 03.01.2022 I've just returned from running a four day photographic retreat in Lancelin, Western Australia with my forever lovely friend @juliekphotography and a group of keen and wonderful photographers. We covered portraits, landscape, local rascals in taverns who couldn't hide their hearts of gold. Like intrepid adventurers we photographed sand storms in the desert, and the rare, and iconic pinnacles in Nambung National Park. The people we met along the way, the characters who posed,... chatted, belly laughed with us, and who we connected with, added the extra touch, the magic that made our retreat so special. East Arnhem Land in Australias Top End is one, and Bhutan, a land circumnavigated by the Himalayas like prayer wheels on a temple, is another. Sitting proudly on top of a mountain, and smaller than most Bhutanese temples, this one offers hope for childless couples. Women travel far and wide, and from overseas, to reach these sacred walls. During a fertility blessing they carry a large wooden phallus as they circumnavigate the temple muttering mantras in the hope theyll conceive.
